I can't tell you how much I love your videos. I hope you keep going. 1000 subscribers is so close. Your day will come. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, this is gold.
For animals that would normally feed at will, having only 1 place to eat, where other horses repeatedly drive you off.. seems like a good way to have your boarders lose weight and underperform.
That’s a very good point, Keep in mind this is for groups of horses to heighten the pecking order for filming purposes. New horses that come into training go together in a group with harmony. Once the pecking order has been established, they find their position and eat with the group. Horses that come to us in groups, go together in their own group. We are fortunate enough to have enough long-term horses that we can categorize them into groups of dominant or timid.
Great video thanks for your input. The dynamics are fascinating and I'm continuing to see new communications I've missed or misinterpreted over my lifetime with horses. It's so important to realize what's your Core Body is telling them and balance that with your pressure and intent to minimize any confusion. ( asking for forward movement position your core behind the tail and your core on front of his nose to slow down or stop) You will see instant results even with horses you've not handled previously. Try it and be amazed! Troy / Riding and Driving Coach for Connections Boarding Stables Salinas CA
Well done ! Your way is the right way. It makes sense to the horse. They have so much trouble with humans making no sense what’s so ever and end up getting ulcers instead of learning some good lessons 🥲
I'm always on the lookout for new and improved horsemanship skills to add to mine. Came across your channel and really like what I see. Just finished watching (twice) "Desensitizing the Nervous Horse " from 3y ago. You make a great point that we cannot control the environment, we need to teach the horse to handle the environment. So, here's my question: the pattern of turning up the heat and holding it for 3 seconds after they stop moving their feet is excellent, but in the real world the heat, or scary object does not go away after 3 seconds. Often times, depending on the horse, I will get him used to the heat in motion, because when we add movement and/or speed it adds emotion to the horse and he needs to handle the pressure while moving, without freaking out. Any thoughts? Thanks very much.
Hey, sorry for the late reply I just seen this comment. You raise a very good question. Teaching them to stand for three or four seconds before I take the pressure away to get them to soak in the fight and stink long enough to trigger a new response. I find all horses use the flight instinct as their first reaction. But I have learned from working with different bands of wild horses in different demographics that they can be reconditioned to using the fight instinct first. The fight instinct is where they stopped their feet. Most people think that the fight instinct is when they strike biker kick, which is true, but it starts with stopping their feet the opposite of running. All of that being said what I’m looking to recondition is the start effect. I want them to freeze anytime something startles them. That takes that bolt instinct away. I still need to teach them how to handle fear while their feet are moving, but it’s a much easier task once I’ve taught them to freeze. That makes sense. Would love to talk more. If you have more questions, you can email and I will get it quicker. doug@dougmills.com
I think this is a better way than what I've done in the past. My horse would rear, and maybe she was doing that because the rope was too short. Great advice. Thank you!
This is a very good way of explaining, I have a very nervous colt that runs and blows air at about anything but he has a big heart and he’s learning well with these techniques 👍
