Very cool! My brother went to see the Zombies within the last 5 years at Penn State. I wish he invited me! He said it was really great and he was seated on Rod’s side of the stage so he got to really observe him. “Hold Your Head Up” is a classic! Thanks for tuning in Graham.
if you've ever seen the "Yacht Rock" Parody sketches with Hollywood Steve, yeah, a lot of the names you included were in there. Jethro Tull even was included in 1 episode.
Well done Steve , for digging this up , I also had never heard of the website and it looks really interesting . I think I recognise the founder from a YT channel from some years ago , so will also make contact. Great work !
Glad you enjoyed it and found a new source of prog info. I love how meticulous it is with archives and easy navigation. I feel like prog attracts more passionate followers. I could be wrong, but when we aren’t listening to it we are talking about it and exploring information about prog. Best of all is the connection among all of us!
You mean Billy and Jon dressed like Huns surrounded by hanging carcasses waiting to be butchered? Makes perfect sense to me Graham. Yeah I think this project was doomed right from the start yet this is the only Billy Joel album I will probably ever buy. Not really sure what that says about me…
@@grahamallen9393 Great band Graham! I have their first 2 albums. I thought of Frumpy as a what if Adele was in a prog band scenario. Safe travels my friend and please share your plunder with the community.
I didn’t even make that connection. Just from memory I only know Craney from “A” by Jethro Tull. I was in college when the remaster came out and it was the first time I saw Eddie Jobson and it changed my world! Thank you for bringing that to my attention Graham!
Music albums your Mother would not have you listen to.......Auto Salvage, 1968 Bubble Puppy 68, The Electric Prunes, Family music from in a Doll House 68, Peter Kaukonen Black Kangaroo 72 , Kak, 19 ? Steve Hillage Fish Rising album. Ian Carr [ of Nucleus ] Belladonna 72 Peanutbutter Conspiacy The Great Conspiracy 67, Quintessence, self titled 70, and underated albums like Grateful Dead Anthem of the Sun, Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother, Steppenwolf Monster, and The Who Odds and sods which was really a 1968 album despite what RU-vid said. So dear Sir I think You said John, I have mentioned some the mothers don't approve of LOL 😆
As we know prog is a wonderful genre because it means different things to different people. Quite a deep list you have. Family’s “Music From a Doll’s House” is a classic. I’m sure a lot of this would have sent some parents in a tizzy back in the day. Rebelliousness was an alluring part of listening to it. Luckily, I can share yacht rock with my mother in law and that is what really matters to me.
Wow! That is funny how those stars aligned. I actually bought a couple of versions of it on cd. The other version is a 2 disc release that includes “Reflections on the Past” that is made up of other recordings at the time of their original album. I will be listening to it sometime next week. I am really excited for this one! Thanks for the suggestion!
I would love to believe me. I’ve snuck in very small music samples in other videos, but there is always the threat of being copyrighted. I’m not monetized, but someday I hope to be. At this rate I am on a 15 year track before that happens. I do appreciate the view and suggestion. Luckily I believe a lot of this music can be found on RU-vid.
Great picks. Fermata is my favourite one. I’ve got a ton of suggestions but I’m more a fusion guy. I think, in a more symphonic way, Oceanworld from the UK band Autumn should be a good start.
I just listened to some Autumn on RU-vid. Yeah that is definitely something I’m really into. Aside from listening to it on RU-vid it is difficult to find a copy of it without a high price tag. Great suggestion though. I will definitely be looking out for that one!
Hmm, searching into my collection, I found this one : the Australian Fantasy of Horses from Rainbow Theatre. Symphonic instrumental arrangements, check. Fusionny rhythm section, check. Multiple analog keyboards, check. A must have IMHO.
@@user-sb3xn5mu8u That one I will check out too. I did track down new copies of them on douglarsonimports.com Great place to find rare prog. Thank you for the suggestion. You dig deep friend!
I have all of Gentle Giant. The Power and the Glory is a great song and album. Nucleus and Dzyan I have not listened to yet. I am listen to a little Dzyan as I am writing this. Very avant garde and interesting I would say.
My Solid Ground is a great album from 1971. I would recommend listening to the last half of the album first because the best songs are in that half and the album is kind of long.
You are listening to a lot of great 60s and 70s music in a myriad of formats which is awesome. You have made music a true companion in your life. Music can certainly act as sonic diary of what was happening in life while you were discovering a song, album, band, or even genre. Before I truly discovered prog I listened to a lot of Pye era Kinks. Classic stuff. Thanks for viewing and the comment!
Great pics Steve , Fermata I will be checking out , saw quite a few of there albums cheap on my travels and will also be checking out Goblin . I ‘ m finding myself tending more towards instrumental albums these days . Best G
@@grahamallen9393 I think you will appreciate them both. I would lean Roller a little more toward symphonic and Fermata fusion. There are plenty of passages in those albums to enjoy. Thanks for not ripping on my pronunciation of Recreation. I always appreciate your input and envy your travels abroad, but love getting updates on them.
Wow, thanks for the education. I have to admit that I have never heard of any albums/artists you presented in this video. Your channel deserves more subs, IMHO Hecenia's La Couleur du Feu is a truly great underrated prog rock instrumental album
I did find Hecenia. I listened to some of the music off the album you mentioned and it is certainly beautiful instrumental prog. Wonderful keyboards! Thank you for the suggestion. I very much appreciate your support.
Great entries. Agreed, Kayak could be a good entry point for prog beginners as their ''prog meets pop kind of vibe'' is pretty accessible music. The Zombies is a very good choice, this album is a must-have and managed to capture the mood of 1960s Swinging London IMHO. Never heard of Recreation, which definitely peeked my curiosity as I grew up close to Belgium and Machiavel is one of my favorite bands, so thanks for the education 🙂
You definitely know your music. It is difficult choose albums in videos like this because you can justify so much great music in this era. I will be talking about Recreation in part 2 of the instrumental albums. Machiavel is a fantastic band. I do have a couple of their albums. They deserved to be talked about more. I really look forward to more of your input. Thank you so much for leaving a comment!
I was going to leave a comment calling you out on the bonus vocal track on the Dice album, but I guess I'll just say awesome episode and keep up the good work!
Very nice selection. French bands (yes, I'm French) Terpandre and Dün come immediatly to my mind. Regarding my favorite genre : kraut fusion, Agitation Free, Missus Beastly, Aera and Embryo are must have IMO. And what about the wonderful Italian band Agora ? Excellent !
You certainly dig deeper than I do. I have heard of a lot of the bands you have mentioned, but I haven’t had a chance to listen to them yet. I always enjoy comments mentioning other groups. That is exactly the type of comments I’d like to facilitate from my videos. Thank you and I will give them a listen!
Great stuff Steve and a couple of names I need to check out , I saw quite a lot of Pink Mice in the cheap bins in Berlin but think I hadn’t done enough research on them , so didn’t pick them up - next time . Will be checking out Dice and Atlas . Looking forward to part 2!
Graham, always a pleasure to hear from you my friend. You might like the first Pink Mice album over the second since it features the Hammond. The second is very synthy which I like, but it is not always used well and can be a bit much at times. Atlas and Dice are a real joy to listen to in my opinion. Atlas was rereleased a couple of years ago and should be easy to find. I figured you’d have Collegium Musicum. You are one of the few that mention them. Part 2 is basically finished. I will release it in a couple of weeks. Thanks again!
Dice and Gryphon are the only two I knew so I’ll be diving in to the others you mentioned. Really good topic and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge of these albums. I’m looking forward to part two!
We definitely learn from each other in this community that is for sure. Hopefully I have a few surprises in the next video. When you think you have found almost everything you end up down another rabbit hole. What is there not to love about this genre? Thank you for commenting!
I listen to prog. music and I appreciate creative music. Yesterday I listened to Mike Oldfield Tubular bells and Nucleus Solar Plexus Today I am planning to listen to the Mahavishnu Orchestra complete Columbia Box album set
The wonderful thing about prog is that it casts a wide net on music which you certainly understand. Some accessible and some very avant garde. It looks like you are exploring your own music which is great. As long as it makes sense to you and it is authentic that is all that matters. You are definitely listening to great prog! I really appreciate the view and comment.
Nice one Steve, been waiting for that review of Triumvirat Live , May try and pick up . Blast Furnace on my list to check out . Recently found small vinyl stall in Camden Market London and picked up two very obscure Belgium albums , Organ trio Recreation, the debut self titled especially recommended , they also had some Italian Prog that is rare to find Latte e Miele and The Trip . Also recently picked up Trikolon album which is another organ fest . Off to Prague in a few weeks which has some great vinyl shops . Ps is the theme tune available anywhere in full ?
I think you will enjoy both Triumvirat and Blast Furnace. I have the 2 Recreation albums on 1 cd. I incorporated them in my Prog tag and I wrote an upcoming video in which I will delve slightly deeper. I am impressed by both of their albums. The 2nd one is bananas, but it is listenable. I have a few The Trip albums, but only listened to one. Also good, but I got distracted before I listened to another. Latte e Miele I definitely missed and judging by the instruments it is something I will really like. Italian prog is amazing music. Inferno by Metamorfosi is one of my favorites. I will be looking forward to your video about your Prague music excursion. If you send me an email (address should be in the description) I can send an mp3 of the theme song. I got the okay from my uncle :) I always appreciate your support Graham and it pleasure hearing from you!
I talk about Billy Ritchie and Clouds on the second part of this video if you haven’t seen it. Clouds definitely deserve much more credit as you know. Thank you for checking out my video!
I am glad to have found another prog channel! Of course, I have none of those challenges you covered , hmmmm. I also keep telling myself that I need to have a good collection of music built up for my retirement 12-15 years out. Cheers, Richard
Ha yeah I really put my progressive rock issues out there on full display. I am happy you aren’t experiencing the same problems 😁 Collecting this genre is certainly insurance for the future. Very nice meeting you. Prog on!
Gosh Graham, I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t gotten to it yet. Hopefully this summer I listen to my massive backlog. I’m probably almost 100 cds behind. Seriously! I’ve read mixed reviews on Iron Duke. Perhaps not overly innovative, but gets the job done. Have you ever listed to Trace with Rick Van Der Linden on keys? It is a great listen!
@@grahamallen9393 Did you mention ExCubus in a video you did? I looked them up. Interesting backstory. I could be spending money on worse things. I always appreciate your suggestions. Keep them coming!
Hi Steve - guilty as charged :-)) Oh my word all of those and more . BUT I have another name for you 1970's German heavy prog with great Hammond - Murphy Blend - one and done album , First Loss , suspect you may know them . Also have you heard Elephant 9 from Norway - crazy Hammond avant prog . Thanks for the mention . Love the input from your daughter .
I’m here for you brother ha! Murphy Blend is now in my cart at douglarsonimports. Thank you for the suggestions. I do take them seriously. I listened to a little Elephant 9. Yeah they sound great too! There are a couple of Danish bands you might like. Blast Furnace I really enjoyed, which I think I mentioned before. I will be talking about them in my next video. Also, The Old Man & the Sea. I haven’t listened to them yet, but I will in the near future. Don’t let my daughter fool you too much… she has gotten a large dose of prog. Her first live vocal she heard in the womb was Arthur Brown singing for Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy. At that point prog was fused in her DNA!
I have the lion's share of ELP albums but can't say I'm that familiar with them. They are a band that I've put off getting to know until later. Maybe it's the 'classical' ingredients that Greg Lake used that puts me off a little. I don't know if you are familiar with Ring Van Möbius. They have sort of rediscovered the sound of ELP. I really enjoy listening to them and I tell myself that I really should spend some time getting to know ELP. Some bands do take time for me. It took me nearly thirty years to get into Wishbone Ash for example and then one day when the penny finally dropped I found myself with a generous back catalogue to catch up with. I'll give Pictures... a spin now and see if I'm drawn into it. Great video by the way. Cheers
One thing I love about prog is two people can love it, but go in completely different directions. Please let me know what you think of Pictures. To me it embodies raw ELP. What they were all about when they started. I have not listened to Wishbone Ash yet, but now that you mentioned them I am more intrigued. I have been reading and hearing about them for years. Sometimes it takes the right person to recommend something before you listen. I guess that person should be you. Ring Van Möbius is on my radar. Good stuff! Thank you John!
@@myprogrockshow3025 The Wishbone Ash album to start with is Argus. Iron Maiden have attributed their dual guitar sound to WA, but I've always struggled to hear what they mean. It wasn't until I heard Argus on vinyl that I finally understood. On CD it's like you hear them with artificial strip lighting, while on vinyl you get the real sunlight pouring through the window, and not only that, you feel the warmth from that sunlight. I'm conscious of sounding like a record snob, but for me it was that strong of an experience. I'll be sure to revisit ELP properly this week. Hopefully I'll hear what you describe. I've got a lot of ELP LPs that will thank you for it. :-)
I completely missed RSD this year. That David Bowie record is one I would have probably gone for too. Don't recall seeing your ELP Pictures... video. I'll be sure to seek it out. You got some interesting records to listen to there. Cheers
The David Bowie album had a lot of copies released so that should be easy to find. I couldn’t believe the amount of people at Music City this year. There was always a small crowd, but not a line around the building. I’m glad to see people of all ages taking part.
Thank you for tuning in! This area is very lucky to have Music City. The theme song was written by my uncle Stephen Lawrenson who has released his own albums. I asked him to put a proggy song together and I was blown away by the result. Honestly it is the best part of my channel.
Wow, what a great store owner, and what a great store. I really do miss living in the US and receiving the great customer service available there. It really hasn't caught on here in the UK.
This area is very lucky to have Benny and Music City. 42 years of business is a real testament to how truly amazing this place is. Hopefully you make it back over here to check it out.
I used to skip school and dig through those records at their Binghamton location a little too often. I’m a little shaky, but I could have been your camera man for this shoot. My daughter is the one that now digs through their records and she has brought home some cool ones. And I snagged a sweet Pork Pie snare drum from there this past year.
You are more than welcome to join the crew. That will bring my film crew up to 2 people including me… I couldn’t believe the inventory in Music City. Definitely your one stop shop for anything music.
Awww great trip - what a lovely guy and great to meet Chris Squire - somehow I knew we'd see some UK and ELP ! I 'm off to Berlin next week record hunting , hoping for some more of those Hammond driven 70's gems .
Benny is all class. He is wonderful to work with and our conversation extended way outside the video. He knows his music. Please, please share your finds in Berlin. I finally listened to Danish band Blast Furnace. That has some great Hammond. Cannabis India is on deck. I will be talking about them in an upcoming episode. As always, I appreciate your comments!
I definitely think you are on to something. Awaken is definitely a more digestible song. We need a name for your method. “The Revealing Ritual of Awakening Method”. Yes conversion therapy.
This was absolutely wonderful . But allow me to tweak your recommendation about Tales From Topographic Oceans : Play the first 30 seconds of The Revealing Science Of God , pause for a moment to let the new listener digest it , then play the last minute or so of Ritual . Let them digest that for a moment . At that point you should be able to entertain them with Awaken played in it's entirety . Congratulations ! New Yes fans .............................
I know the name Doug Larsen but have never actually looked at the site , so thank you , that is a great recommendation ! And some new names for me to check out too . Love the shot of the neighborhood - very cool!
Honestly it is a fantastic place to buy prog. I don’t even want to know what I spent there in the last decade, but well worth it. It is funny you mentioned the neighborhood. The people that live in the house behind me at the top of the street are originally from the Dover area in the UK. Nice folks! It was unseasonably warm that day hence the short sleeves.
I appreciate the view and the compliment. The 70s prog scene is so dense with information it is challenging to organize it all, but I will continue to try.
Lots of dots connected! I had tickets to see Jethro Tull and ELP but my friends car broke down on our way there. That was a bummer. I still have my unused ticket. Sadly I never got to see JT live but have seen ELP a couple of times. Fun video. I enjoyed the pictures of you meeting some of those legends. Looking forward to the meeting Roger Dean story at some point.
Sorry about missing Jethro Tull. I did see Tull 20 some years ago, but I never saw ELP. I showed up very late to the prog party. Now we are fighting time so when a band comes around it is imperative to see them. I’m just happy people like you are keeping the music alive and well.
