Thank you for the video. May i ask if it has to be real gold? Like 99.99% of 24k gold?
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Месяц назад
I've used the Speedball fake gold which needs an adhesive. For this style, blowing gold on gesso, yes, it needs to be real gold. It can be edible gold, or you can get artist quality gold, the price range is a tiny bit different. For flat gilding (not this) I often go with the edible as it's a little cheaper, for raised, you really want the higher quality material for a better finish. It's a $10 difference, so not much if it's a small project, but it does add up over time.

I picked these guys up at my local Tractor Supply, which is Hoover's Hatchery. I've also ordered directly from Hoover's with no issues, but those were day old chicks not eggs. The best thing to do is to find a reputable breeder near you and pick them up directly as there are too many scams - avoid FB marketplace unless you can go there in person.

First off I would love to say that I loved your videos on parchment making they are awesome, there isn't anyone out there giving such wonderful instructional short videos like the ones you have. I wanted to ask you if I can use veg tanned goat skin to make parchment? That's the only material I can get my hands on unfortunately. I'm thinking maybe soak it in a lime solution for a couple of days (I'm not sure if it needs it), rinse and then follow your instructions on stretching and fleshing. Will that work? I would really love to hear your thoughts on that or maybe advice if you've tried it or heard of it being done. Thanks again for your wonderful content.
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep 7 месяцев назад
Thank you so much. I'm glad the videos are helpful! Unfortunately I don't think it will work. Parchment is a glorified rawhide which needs the collagen intact as it dries and as the fibers are stretched into alignment. As I understand it, veg tanning coats the collagen with tannin, making it not stick together. Essentially the 'glue' has been deactivated, which is why it's flexible. You'll also have the issue of the hair follicles closing down on the hair tightly in the tanning process and the keratin being stabilized with the tannin too, I'm not totally up on the chemistry of that, but I think with the veg tanning it 'fixes' that in place where the lime dissolves it. I'm not sure how well it would let go after the fact. You can use any ungulate. Calf, deer, goat, sheep, etc. so depending on where you are in the world you may be able to call around to custom butchers or abbattoirs and ask them. Sheep & goat farmers who sell their livestock for meat are more than happy to unload a hide for a few dollars, though that can be more difficult depending on local laws. Rawhide will also work, just hydrate it and stretch & scrape, then dry under tension. Best of luck to you! If you run into any issues or have any other questions feel free to ask.

Loved the video (and the chicks!) - If you haven't already, I would highly recommend listening to the "sold a story" podcast which highlights one facet of public school education - reading. After a 6 year investigation, they found that schools were not teaching kids how to read (regardless of public or private schooling) and goes into how that happened. It's wild and really explains why by in large Americans read so poorly. It also sheds a light into what teachers have to deal with and gives a way forward.

I listened to 'sold a story' last night, and YES THAT! OMG. So frustrating. I know a lot of schools are switching to Science of Reading, and I haven't really looked into it because LOE is working so well for him. Many of my young adult friends follow along with our homeschool journey and are re-educating themselves as we go. One friend taught herself to read with the help of her wife using LOE, and also picked up some basic math books to re-learn that. She was kicking her heels in in-school suspension though most of her school years, and didn't learn much (abusive home life, some undiagnosed learning disabilities). Another dove into the history courses because 'it's not all just wars.'

Also do you have experience using a pumice stone? Any difference from using cuttlebone?
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Год назад
yeah, I've tried the pumice stones. They work, but each stone is slightly different, and figuring out which stone = which grit is a pain in the neck, and the natural stones can have hard inconsistencies in them. I've scratched a lot of hides that way, the cuttlebone is consistent. The best pumice stone for the first stage is the rectangular bar with the rounded edges that's sold in the bath section for feet. It's rough, but it does the job well.
@chayimgoldberg7164
@chayimgoldberg7164 Год назад
Do you sand differently on either side?
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Год назад
yes, slightly. The hair side usually requires less and goes to finer finish faster. No harsh paper, I'll rarely touch it with anything grittier than 220. I'm looking for a certain gloss or luminosity in it, like soft polished marble. Some people take it past 600, but I like a little tooth, so I stop there. For botanical parchment, go to 1,000 grit. The flesh side will go to suede really fast if I'm not careful, but can take heavier sanding if necessary in thicker areas. Traditionally this was shaved down with the round knife, which TBH is just as fast once you get the hang of it. I'm looking for a smooth surface here too, but also to even out the thickness.

Arent you not supposed to put them on their back?
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Год назад
Yes and no. It can really stress some rabbits out. Angoras need their bellies cleaned, shaved, etc. Other rabbits need their glands cleaned regularly. Medical stuff comes up, so it's best to have the rabbit trained to be tipped over so it is not a super stressful awful scary thing when they are already stressed. You have to support their spines or there is a risk their backs could break. There were studies that showed their cortisol levels went up while on their backs, but I'm not sure if those rabbits were turned onto their backs for the first time ever (rabbits are prey animals and being on their back with their belly exposed is usually the last experience they'll ever have, that has to be super stressful), or if these were rabbits who were trained to be on their backs and it still stressed them out. They don't /like/ it. But my kid doesn't like having his hair brushed, and I definitely didn't like having the biopsy yesterday. Rabbits can also be super stressed in other positions: the "oh so cute" bunny loaf where they sit and don't move is a stressed out position that most people don't recognize. They are freezing in place hoping the Big Scary Thing doesn't eat them.

On January 23, 2023, The Max Rabbit, AKA Mr. Max, AKA Max the Murder Bunny, AKA Good Bunny Boy Max passed away. He'd slowed down over a couple days, and was struggling to breathe. I took him in to his wonderful vet, and we made the right but hard decision for him. I miss my friend, but it was an honor to have him in my life for so many years. Miss Skittles is starting to interact with the other bunnies, but it was a hard month for her, first she lost Max, the love of her life, and then she lost her sister Tootsie who was her BFF and one of my best bunnies, (Toots passed from mammary cancer the first week in February. I missed the signs of it, but TBH even if I had caught it we wouldn't have been able to do much for her). I will do a video on it eventually, though no photos; I was battling pneumonia when that happened, and this is the first day I'm feeling well in almost a month.

I have been looking for a video like this for over a year! I have the same thing with my bunny. I thought it was ISC. I have to do this about every 3-4 days! What causes it? I give her a butt bath and squirt a little Dawn on her which breaks up the poop immediately then rinse well and put antibiotic ointment or bag balm on her after drying. I don't know what causes it? Help!!!!!! I also have an indoor bug zapper to prevent fly strike.
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Год назад
There can be several causes: Coccidia (I've treated for that just recently due to a sick cat... I don't think it's the same strains, but...). I got some Toltrazuril at All Things Bunny. E. cuniculi, treatable with a 28 day paste fenbendazole / PanacurT (again from All Things Bunny). You should definitely talk to your bunny vet thought, because there are a few other causes and it's important not to just toss medication at them. Vet should be able to test a fecal sample and target the cause. Sometimes it's just "too much fluff" and they can't get to their own business end to clean things up. I try to keep all my bunnies clipped short on the underside. In Max's case, it's because he has a low scrotum that covers his vent area, and things get 'stuck' there. He's also old (8 now), and has arthritis, so it's harder for him to keep up his own grooming. I check several times a day, bum bath when needed, dry him off real well, and give lots of 'forgive me' snuggles.
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Год назад
I use Ivermectin on the rabbits to prevent mites, it will also prevent fly strike, but yeah, fly strike is a real concern when they have this issue. It can happen in a matter of hours, and it's awful to deal with.

I used to raise Giants. This may be a German/French hybrid or Giant/French hybrid, though this rabbit doesn't seem to be as big as a typical Giant. The posture resembles a French more. If it is part French, that explains why you can partially pluck it.
@auroraasleep
@auroraasleep Год назад
@@lynphillips2109 entirely possible. I had an experienced angora breeder tell me she was a Giant based on body size, hair texture & head shape, so I took her word for it. The truth is I just don't know. I was her 3rd home, and the lady I got her from thought she was an English Angora male. Definitely not an EA, definitely not a male. I had an FA/EA cross, and she wasn't that either. I've since had FA's & Satins, and she wasn't either of those. That leaves a cross, German, or Giant. Almost all of my rabbits molt eventually, but I generally don't let them get to that point as shearing is faster. Lumpkin never minded plucking. Regardless of what kind of bunny she was, she was a good rabbit and I liked having her. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
