Watched the whole stream, epic hygge, I'll get parrots eventually someday when I got the space and money, probably a macaw or two, also had my eyes on golden conures and eclectus parrots.

I notice you’re very responsive to many of your comments; and I’m looking for a bit of advice. I myself am a vet student, and am seriously considering becoming a practitioner of avian medicine in the future. Because of this, I want to get some husbandry experience underneath my belt with avians and am looking for a good species to keep. I want a bird that will fit a schedule where I can be gone or mentally absent for 30min-2 hr blocks, but still require a moderate amount of physical and mental investment. I’ve been looking into pionus, or maybe conures and parrotlets? Specifically the two that seem most appealing to me so far are green cheek conures and pionus parrots. I would have at least a solid hour to give in undivided mental attention, and at the most 3.5 or more. Since this is a goal I plan to meet in the next 1-2 years, money isn’t as much of a concern but is still something I am factoring into the equation. I’m also pretty noise tolerant (my partner as a budgie that talks nonstop, so there’s always a warble in the background) but really shrill shrieks for long periods can really stress me out. Do you have any thoughts? Any other comments feel free to give your thoughts as well
@stellaandcharlie
@stellaandcharlie 11 дней назад
Hi Void! I totally get the dilemma, cause I've been there myself.... I can't say I have experience with Conures, but I'll gladly share why I ended up choosing Pi's and the differences I know of. So based on what you write, I actually think it comes down to what you condition the bird too (wether it's a conure or pionus), since its all in the routines. Training and desensitizing to a routine where you can leave for those hours aswell as the attention you can provide. I will say however than while a lot can be trained the "stereo types" can be used as a guide to what will be easier for the bird to adapt too. For example the Pi might have an easier time entertaining itself, while conures (while still trainable to tolorate it more) usually require more of your attention. As for what is the "species norm" in those two species I have a list of what my impression is: - Pi are more chill, while Conure are more energetic - Conure are more outgoing, where Pi's are more reserved - Conure wants to be involved more, where Pi's dont mind having alone time - Conure are more playfull, Pi's would rather chill - Conure are more cuddly, while Pi's arent as touchy feely So it depends on what you want in a bird - A playfull snuggle buddy (then I would go conure), or a chill "just following along" companion (then Pi's might be better). But again, the indivual and the routines you give them have more to say in my opinion. Noice wise, I've heard "quiet" conures and loud Pi's and vers visa, so thats a difficult one... My next video is on routines, and exactly what you can do to make life "easier" owning bird, so you can maybe get some more questions answered there aswell. I hope that helped, else feel free to ask away :D

I loved this! And I love how you've used this as an amazing educational experience! I've always said not all birds need a companion, looking back, quaffle would have never cared if I got her a friend. Im glad I did as we're out a lot but for someone who is home regularly it's not essential. After 6 months, ABBA potentially got used to routine, diet conversion and training etc. And Charlie probably would of got used to her. But as you say it's time and a big commitment taking on a 2nd bird. At the end of the day, you gave it a trial, you learnt a lot! And you knew what was best for you and Charlie. Also that's an interesting routine for Abba
@stellaandcharlie
@stellaandcharlie 16 дней назад
Thank you Ashley! I'm also glad I gave it chance, and thank you so much for the advice on the way :) I can totally see what you mean with Quaffle, though now I kind of see as the big sister that has to pretend she dosen't like the little one, yet she would miss Lyra if she wasn't there ;) Its comfording reading Charlies bodylanguage and seeing that she is really content and that's both in regards to hormones and overall her being on her own.
@PionusTales
@PionusTales 16 дней назад
@stellaandcharlie that's exactly quaffle to a T right now 🤣 and Lyra is similar to Abba in the sense that she's intrigued by other birds. Typical little sister trying to impress big sister. If she's more than content, and you're happy with how she is, that's all that matters. Like I said if you were able to give it 6 months then yeah, it most likely would of worked out. But as you say it's a lot of extra time for you to put in all that extra effort. And that's so important for people considering a 2nd bird or a rehome or rescue as they may need a lot of work. So this video is great for people to consider what they're getting in for. Lyra used to be soooo quiet, and now she's the noisiest of the 2 😒

And what a great question, I completely forgot to mention that part: Because the school is brand new and we are so few people, they aren't actually going to acknowledge the credit and let me pass classes, even though I passed in Copenhagen. I think it's to ensure that I learn everything they want me to know for their future classes and since they don't have much experience with transferring students they'd rather be absolutely sure that I don't fall behind, aswell as hang out with my classmates, so I really don't mind :D

Hi, Stella. I am doing a lot of research on if a pionus bird is a right match for me. I would love to ask you some questions please. 1. Does Charlie go through hormonal periods every single year? How long does it last and does she ever bite you? 2. Do you think a female or a male pionus is better? Thank you so much for making these videos. It helps people like me to make the right decision on a huge commitment like this. Any information would be absolutely appreciated! Aloha.
@stellaandcharlie
@stellaandcharlie 2 месяца назад
Hiiiii! Sorry for the late answer, but I'll be glad to give my input :D Birds will generally have two to three hormonal periods a year mostly spanning through the spring and summer time and this is every single year from they are around 2-4 years old (depending on the individual). Hormonal behavior will almost always include some more aggressive or teritorial behavior, because the birds are wiered to build and protect a nest area. Pionus are thankfully more easy to read in regards to body language, so knowing when it's hormone season and really paying attention to their body language is the key to know when they are on edge or nesty and avoid a bite (By just leaving them alone). I have been bit by Charlie with no warnings however, so it is defffinatly possible and can hurt a lot. In regards to gender, I actually was looking to get a male to not worry about my bird being egg-bound (trying to lay an egg and not being able too). Now this is really just generally what I hear, but take it with a grain of salt as all birds are indivuals and their personality, training and bond has a lot to say, BUT, males do tend to be more vocal than females, aswell as displaying more aggressive behavior during hormone season in contrast to females that will usually be more nesty and territoral (and agrressive for that reason). Other than that I really don't think there is much of a difference, so I would go more for personality of the individual. Charlie was super outgoing and curious as a baby, which is why I chose her, and she has really been a joy, with egg laying and nesting never being a problem :) I hope that helped, and I'm so glad to read that you are doing reseach, let me know if you have any other questions :D

Thanks for your sharing, so helpful! I bought this backpack three weeks ago. It’s safe and hard to be destroyed by parrots. I think it’s another problem is its ventilation (I from Taiwan, a subtropical country) is not so good (cuz the double stainless mesh). Besides, it’s difficult to clean up the bottom, when I want to take the bottom out, the residual grains stuck in the corner😢 I’m frustrated when I attached these mesh pieces and disturbed by the zipper too 😢. But my parrot love it, I like this backpack too hhh😂
@stellaandcharlie

It is truly a love/hate realtionship, I totally get what you mean :) I guess I never thought about the ventilation since it’s never been an issue herr where it’s colder, but thanks for mentioning it so others are aware :D Overall tho, it’s better quality than the other backpacks I’ve seen and heard of.

I am a junior in high-school and will be going to college to hopefully one day become a vet as well. I qualify to bring an ESA to school with me and my Mom agreed to a bird. I was wondering if it would reasonable to bring an eclectus to school with me. I am very introverted so I will definitely be home with him after class. I really like the eclectus temperament as they can talk, are playful and will get along with children (which I want to have in the much later future). Is that a reasonable commitment to take on during college?
@stellaandcharlie
@stellaandcharlie 4 месяца назад
I must admit I don't know a lot about eclectus parrots, but taking on any parrot during college is tough and a big commitment. I love and adore Charlie, but parrots are less than optimal when trying to study for an exam and they start to scream for attention... Really do consider everything and maybe find someone with eclectus knowledge that could maybe give better advice, cause I'm afraid I don't qualify :) But hey, best of luck with your studies! I really hope it's everything you wish for, and how cool that you got in, I know it can be quite tough many places, so very well done :D
