Have you try a retractable dog leash for less line work ?

I just bought a Revolution 11 Hobie now sells a furling kit. Have you evaluated that? Your home-made looks nice. I don't get what you were saying about the knot going in at the left, etc. I'd appreciate anyone's written explaination. Thanks

This is an excellent modification. I used it on my 2019 Hobie Compass. The only difference is the length of the PVC pipe. For the Compass, the length is 14 3/4" (inclusive of the end caps). Also, the rigging he describes (blocks, cleats and locations are perfect. Thank-you

Thank you! Great straight forward explanation. I know you posted this 9 years ago! But hoping you might be able to answer my Q... I can't seem to get the PVC pipe to stop riding up towards the sail (causing the sail to get hung up)

*Was very surprised•ᴥ•>**share4.photo/HKayak?У89** by the quality of this one compared to the one I bought from Dicks for only $ less. This one is made great more features. Very happy with it. I can't rate it on the water yet as it is winter here, can't wait to get out and use it!*

I like your system I would have like to have seen the rope wrapping around the device when you pull the sail out. I just am wondering how the rope wraps upward.

This is a great video! I made a furler, tie the line to the middle hatch. I read it on on the Hobie Forum. I am going to eventually finish with the cleats. Thanks!

Excellent work. I tried to setup exactly like your. The only issue I have is I can't open the sail. I can close the sail. It won't spin to open.

I love the sail, especially when I get tired from peddling. My Revolution only has one bungee cord on one side. I need to add another one

Thank you for posting this great idea for the furling tube. The sail mast looks very flexible. When pulling the sheet line to deploy the sail does the mast want to flex and bind making deployment difficult? I can't wait to get to the hardware store.

Excellent setup. I just purchased a used Hobie revolution with mirage drive and sail. I plan to set this system up and add outriggers when Christmas comes. Thanks.

@ Al M - you are so wrong, we just took out our Revo 13 with the sail kit and it was fast smooth and could go virtually any direction. We do also have the ama sidekick outriggers that help and you do need them. So your statement "So, you're stuck with slow sailing (and only when wind is at your back)" is 100 percent false or it is just a bad opinion.
@hobiephil
@hobiephil 9 лет назад
Do get your hopes high. If you actually learn how to sail this setup works well. You can sail up to 45 deg from the wind and tack without using the pedals to power you through. You don't even need the outriggers they sell. Just counterbalance by moving your butt in the seat. Works even better power sailing (sail and peddling). Used on my Revolution 13 with stock ST fins and optional large rudder.

Don't get your hopes high, people. 20 sq.ft is a small sail for a boat as wide and heavy as Hobie. Besides, flexible fiberglass mast makes it slower yet, spilling the wind instead of creating resistance to it. OTH, without an outrigger I wouldn't want anything bigger. So, you're stuck with slow sailing (and only when wind is at your back).

Thanks for the video. Did you end up removing the rubber band that holds the sail down? I'm having a hard time putting the blue rope through the hole in the sail. Thanks.

Did you make that sail device for your kayak?
@emilylanglle1

Thanks for making this great video. I'm about to get a sail and I will definitely use your control system. I noticed when you take the sail down completely and lash it to the side, you didn't seem not remove the furling line or the mainsheet. Do you just give them enough slack to move the sail and then snug them back up? Lines stay out of the way? If so, I'm happy because I thought I'd have to detach all my lines each time!

@someotherdude

assuming it's a sea kayak, you're going to heel (lean) a lot from the wind. Your kayak is narrower, while the sit inside design won't let you hike (counter-lean). So you'd need outriggers or 'side pontoons' although they don't have to be big.

Hi. I just wanted to come back and Thank You for the Great video. I have a tandem AI, and my wife a Hobie Sport with a sail kit. I copied your suggestions exactly, and it worked Fantastic ! It was difficult and a few times dangerous before the modifications. We had a wonderful summer sailing everyday on Cape Cod. I have even shown my Hobie dealer your video, and how I copied you. Sense we spend most of our time on the Ocean, I also added the inflatable pontoons, I would highly recommend them.

Will this modification work on the Hobie Mirage Outback (also has sail in front)? Seems to me that it would. Once I dig it out of storage, I'll have a much better idea!

Hi, Thanks for the info. I just bought a Hobie 2011 Revoultion. I should pick it up this coming weekend. Do you happen to remember the length of line you used for the main sheet? What size hardware for mounting the blocks? Thanks, Steve
@TheReddog007
@TheReddog007 13 лет назад
@Charlietuna49 Most Marine stores have them...i.e. West Marine...they have a whole section for all of the parts you see in the video.....the quick block (or other similar name) is the most expensive at about $40
