i think for men 'may i be happy, may i be at peace' works for them because they are encouraged to value self the most. for women, it's the opposite. it will not work in that order. 'may she/he/they be well' will work because we are actively encouraged to put ourselves aside for others. 'may i be well' will come last for us until we can actual sit in the centre of ourselves. much harder to attain. loving others first is easier for women.
Thank you bhante. You are the budda to me. I get tears when I listen to you. Thank to your institution I get to silence in my mind. I listen to or Delson or to David every day. I lean lot. I was fortunate enough to be at this retreat and further study under Bhante Vimalaramsi afterwards. I can confirm that everything is exactly as Bhante said.
I think it’s so hard to accurately depict a natural phenomenon in life when everything is chaos and evil, it’s easy to make sense of evil and fix evil, but what piece of wisdom can accurately avoid evil, or what piece of wisdom accurately depicts a law of the universe. The entire cosmos is inside our minds to the world we will go to, that’s why I believe most of us won’t make it, it’s like a word the over expresses multiple meanings, unless you know physics and know everything in the world, without the alternate interpretation, of Buddha, you won’t end up in Star Wars, directly know the laws and string theory is like recreating the world you live in now, but setting your knowledge as the lowest base of your existence. The reborn worlds existence, Wisdom is risky when it involves evil, and there are better ways to be reborn like education
It is right effort specifically the "Tranquilize the bodily and mental formations" This is the relax step. Right effort is recognizing the unwholesome state , letting go and Releasing/Relaxing the tension and tightness - and then bring up a wholesome state-Re-smile and keep it going - Return to the object and Repeat.
Loving the five snakes 🐍 metaphor for five hindrances. Also the story of seven monks quiz that came at the beginning of the talk. So much gratitude to you bhante for these clear teachings of the dhamma. An ocean of mettā to you!
Many times I heard smile and smile and I tried imitation smile like Airhostess like plastic smile.Ur words smile and be present changes everything.Thank u Bhante
It's like the feeling of validation you get when you recieve love from someone else, but instead you are validating and giving it to yourself, and then extending it to someone else. If you have love to spare you already love yourself. I don't know, i tried many different meditation styles before but this one is what seems to give me my self-worth back after it became lost due to loneliness. It feels like whenever a person feels lonely (lack of connection) they lose alot of their self-worth due to loss of validation, and Metta is like a reminder of what your worth is, it's very hard to put into words but it really does work
Thank you for this excellent comment! Yes this works because we take the feeling as the object AND add the relax step when a hindrance arises. This is what makes it different.
I love the lotus 🪷 example at 8:00. So T means Tranquility, W means wisdom, I means Insight, M means meditation 🧘♂️ TWIM = Samatha, Paññā, Vipassanā, Bhāvanā 9:38 Sadhu
Ven Sir, my 8 year old says she sees compassion in you. Please keep more of these content coming. I have a question, what’s the source of the ‘Empty Headed Potila’ monk story? Thank you Bhante.
Now I feel like meditating. The added stories are so inspiring to hear with the flavor of the ancient teachings of the Buddha. Thank you bhante. May you be well. ❤
The chain of causation (dependent origination): Because of ignorance, there is the formation of images, simultaneously with the belief that the mental representation is that which is represented. This gives rise to the image of myself, the "separate self", the ego, the "I" thought. Names and forms are then taken by the "I" thought as the ultimate reality. Thus, through the senses, there is contact between the ego and what it considers to be the basic reality. This causes feelings and concepts, which generate the desire for repetition and other desires. The desire for more brings about becoming. Becoming is the movement of one image pursuing another image. Becoming gives continuity to the ego, which clings to its fictitious existence, and is the cause of births, with their entourage of suffering. When there is a real understanding that ideas, concepts, images, representations, mental constructions, names and forms are not the thing in itself, ignorance ceases. With the cessation of ignorance, the continuity of the fictitious entity, of the simulacrum of being, ceases. Since the image is not the being or thing it represents, who or what am I?
Good one! When you realize there is NO Self that is existing and moving forward through life after life time just stops - No self , no being was ever there! The dream has been seen and let go.
In the time of the Buddha, there were no processed food markets, and if you wanted meat, you had to kill it on demand. The Buddha was probably pointing out that if meat already existed, you might as well eat it. There is a ssubtle distinction here between that and creating a mass chain of responsibility shifting so that these "monks" can absolve themsselvess of all the blame by cravenly shifting it to the butchers. In this sense, the butchers can be thought of as the "weapon", in the language of the precept, that the monk usses to kill the animal. But I don't expect these dimwits to undersstand that.
How does it matter whether it was killed for oneself or not? The fact remains that it was killed, it underwent suffering in the process of being killed, the being that killed it underwent demerit. If a group of people were to announce that they were looking to buy human meat, and that they would be willing to pay any butcher who provided it, and the butcher goes out and kills humans to supply it, would the group of people who created the demand for it be held blameless? I don't need a precept for it, this is common sense.
What is the ultimate except working to eliminate the sufferings of all beings? Selflessness grounded in compassion is the ultimate refuge. Seeking nirvana for yourself only? This is selfishness
After practicing this method before many failed meditation 4 years there is a good personality development like relinquish anger and many bad habits Piece and happiness unknown before has set in me.Iam from kerala.India
I am just 6 min into the talk and already i ask myself on account of what do you translate the pali term ,,jati" - birth as rebirth? When it is clear that the pali term ,,punabhavabhinibbatti" is used to describe the ,,coming to be of another existence" So that is a blunt translation error at the very beginning , making your exposition to lose credibility
@@a314 Yes - its good isn't it! I created it on elevenlabs.io I created a podcast for this series - that might be the trick. I am new at this. ru-vid.com/group/PL3sECDBQqxlE7O_Bm-3Tb-_qo7-Zfkp6Y
