The more listen to this, the less and less I find similarities with Depp Purple's fireball. On my first listen, i thought Fireball was a rip off, but in reality these are two different songs, although may initially sound the same. Let me put it this no - no court would award Warpig had they decided to sue Depp Purple. .
the comments of Carol Fisher: I never heard this alternative take of Maf's iconic instrumental, "Repent Walpurgis" before. There's parts of it that on my first hearing I love what Maf's done with it over the more widely heard first Procol Harum album version, although some of what appeals to me, Maf has repeated in some live performance with Procol Harum over the years. I should get back to you with some further feedback after I've discussed it with my mister, Maf. Until then, if you never heard it, have a listen. I think you should enjoy it... Maf listened to the track with me last night and he had a few comments about it. First was that this was the earlier recording of the track. We both agreed that Robin's shorter solo worked better in the instrumental. And it did transform Rob's solo into one of those signature guitar solo's that you remember, note for note. One thing that Maf found funny was that he could actually hear himself using the bass pedals on the track (in live performances Maf always used the bass pedals on "Repent"), but he couldn't hear it on the shorter, recorded version. We also talked about piano solo. When making the recording shorter, just having one piano solo had worked better than two. It also sounded, to me, that Gary played it a bit slower.
Je préfère la version définitive que l'on trouve sur le 33 tour original, bien plus classifiante, dramatique et touchante. Le mixage y est également bien plus compact.❤
It reminds me of my secondary school days in 70s at Mpika Boys High School (school band as a lead guitarist). We used to imitate Zambian rock bands and indeed Jimi Hendrix. That was our time!
There's a lot of contradictory information out there, so it's hard to tell exactly what is correct. The wikipedia article used to say it was originally recorded in 1970, now it says recorded and released 1972, but the album page still says it was recorded 1970 and released 1972. I would love to find an accurate source of information about them. Progarchives still says it was released by Fonthill in mid-1970. But I think Discogs is probably a better source.
Very cool hearing this longer, alternative take of what I consider to be Procol Harum’s very best song! Obviously recorded at the same session as the version that made the album, which is admittedly a bit more concise and to the point… But I love hearing extra guitar work from Robin Trower on this version!👍🎸
Watched him play this song in Tampa Florida as the cops were walking up and down the isles, waiting for the FISH cheer, he sang it and the audience properly answered back...early 70's
