Canadian Forces Base Edmonton , Namao 1970s , runway 11 - 29 was 19, 900 feet long , we could put the space shuttle or a B52 down there if needed , I worked at the Base Fire / Crash hall , one day we had a wheels up landing with a Twin Beech going on at one end and landed the CF 707 at the other , with room to spare !
The reason for these runways being so long is because the combination of altitude and hot temperatures. When it’s hot at these high runways the air density altitude increases dramatically. This causes an aircraft to require much more runway distance to get off of the ground.
I am a retired United Airlines pilot who has landed at Denver many times. Runway 16 Right/34 Left is 16,000 feet long and even taking on flying a Boeing 757, we only used about 6,000 feet of it. Amazing!
