"I can't paint or draw anything" is often the most common thing that I hear people say when it comes to art. My response to that statement: of course you can, everybody can. A lot of people even say I can only draw or paint stick men (isn't this exactly what L. S Lowry was loved for?
I believe there's an artist in everybody and like every journey, no matter how far the destination it starts with a step. For me this journey started when I was around 16 years old when I discovered watercolours, I became fascinated with this medium and just loved how the lost and found edges looked on paper! I bought my first cotman pans and my journey began. Like I said before it doesn't matter about the destination, Im still learning and travelling and as long as you enjoy painting that's important too.
After a number of years with watercolour as my medium I ventured into the world of oil paints!!

Thanks greatly Dave for your enjoyable video again and explaining clearly how and why you created it using this may I say unusual approach with a great result in the detail depth and colours in this painting. Greatly appreciate your inspirational talent stay safe and healthy
Wonderful! Not many use rough paper but I love the way it makes everything look as if you can actually touch it (like rocks). Fabriano Artistico line is 100% cotton. Once again wonderful painting & demo 👍
Yes it's very interesting results you can get by using rough and I do enjoy it too, and thanks for answering my question lol. Appreciate your comment 🙏
Bockingford is very very good non cotton paper, very versatile. I just received one of those (Hot Press) in the little book, 5x7 I think it is. I wanted to try it too😊. I have several of their Cold Press in that size. Just remember, hot press requires more water control than cold press because of the absorbency rate & smoothness. Your try out with hot press is going great, nice pic👍
Good result of Cornish cliff seascape scene Dave, the colours really are of true to area and that was a calm time of year. I know the area as it not far from where I live in south Devon and I'm working my way through your videos as not long found your site, keep up the inspirational work 👍🙏
@philipdown3147 South Devon and Cornwall are lovely places, for me up in the North we have Wales and the lake district, glad you are enjoying my videos, thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Thanks greatly Dave for sharing your riverbank scene created on paper I think I will stay away from for sometime 😮, thanks Dave you have been able to create a lovely painting again.
Amazing result Dave you have achieved with very minimum colours and plan scenery which has arrived at an excellent effects to create a brilliant painting, thanks greatly appreciated stay safe and healthy
The right wing has embraced some ideas presented by the Charlie Brown Character named Pig Pen. In other words right wingers embrace being as filthy as possible while behaving like a child. From this basis comes the persona of Sarah Huckabee Sanders...
Dave, you may know I don’t understand very well English language. To watch your aquarelle paintings is for me also a try to learn English in your pleasant relation. I am finding you are progressing in this art and I am feeling your any sadness and relative sight of life in your paintings. Stand a well person ,Dave, I don’t want to disturb too much . Thank you for the musics, I am enjoying them very much !
Wow thankyou for the comment and watching my painting progress, which I do find that I'm improving too. I just wish I could paint more often but can't due to family commitments and work. Glad you enjoy the music too, Good to know my friend 🙂🙂
Thankyou, really appreciate your comment. I have a video dedicated to scraping rocks and textures etc ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G1dKW8zYEaI.htmlsi=HSqWfmiUIwmxxTGV Hope this is useful too 😄
Thanks Dave for your inspirational video, it's interesting to watch how you explain it to create a coastal scene, thanks greatly appreciate stay safe and healthy lovely colours and detail
@ConnieGarrett-l1s Thankyou for the comment love to say I remembered the colours I used, with oils I always mix my own, but looking at the water I prob used paynes gray ultramarine blue and a bit of red. Thanks for watching!
So nice! Just happened across this today, so thanks to the algorithm that brought me here and thanks to you for sharing so much. These trees! I love the silver birches in the back ground, but also the shading you accomplished on your foreground trees-lovely.
Absolutely amazing effect Dave you have created using hotpress paper, I've not tried using it yet but with your inspirational video and explanation I will be able to have ago thinking of your talk when using it on this enjoyable video. Thanks greatly appreciated
@philipdown3147 Ohh that's great to hear my friend, and happy you enjoyed it let me know how you get on. It is much different than the other surfaces but still fun 😁
Keep practising and paint like you don't care how it turns out, use big brushes and learn how much water to put down and you will get there 😊 thanks for watching
Thank you for this painting, image of free life moments, aren’t they ? I am not sure to be abble to like living in such fresh and rustic conditions, but I like to dream of free life , if it does exist Were you giving an invitation for meeting us ? Damage, I can’t drive my car alone to England ! I am a quite old women of more than 60 years old very often, now, do you know this ? And English talkings are not always easy all to understand for me. But if you want, could you give me a visit in France ? Thank you for your patience and your happy music too .
@isabellepanaget2961 Thankyou so much for your lovely comment, I do like to paint free and loose in style mostly from imagination. Thankyou for watching. France is a beautiful country
Mr. Cool thanks lol I wish I were cool :). I don't mind being compared to Bob Ross it is a high compliment. Just to say since I watched the whole video, the way I do my skies is I mix the white in with the paint, I didn't see much of a difference here either I think you probably did not mix in that much. It takes on an almost pastel look the way I use it. I will say it looks like your granulated nicely. also it looks like it lifted more easily. Thx for the shout out.
@joemenzaart Honestly I just don't know how you turn your watercolours into oils but it always great to watch! Thanks Joe for watching and leaving your comments my friend Mr cool 😎 👍
@joemenzaart Yes I thought while using Chinese whites it's more of a semi opaque and would definately prefer the white gouache if I could find it, maybe I'll have to buy some more. As if I need an excuse to get more supplies lol 😆
Good video. The dry brush blending I have done this in several of my videos. In order for it to blend without smearing if you use a bit of whie it will blend better. Some papers will smear more than others.
Thanks I liked the scene a lot. Did you allow the first washes you did to completely dry before putting in the mountains? And if so, did you then re-wet the paper before doing them?
Having just bought Kadi paper I am bit dissapointed that my watercolour paint looks very muted on it, however this really suits moody scenes....I will persevere !
