Heard and loved this piece today for the first time performed by the Phoenix Festival Orchestra in Prescott, AZ. Eager to listen to more from Carlos Simon…
yes, i feel that the story being told here was maybe a little too "pushed," though, perhaps. the subtle drama was appropriate, but that loud bead of constancy made for a slightly too hurried tempo?
What a genius. And a powerfully inspired and inspiring person. She is able to express, within a single song, spiritual insights which are at the same time a via dolorosa and a path to True Life. The title of the song is itself a whole world to explore with awe, with respect, and with sincerity. A thousand Thanks to Kaki King.
I love photos from Helen, and I'm so glad I get to hear it again here in good quality. For me, it fully describes a feeling of confronting something powerful and so much bigger than you, but still feeling removed and distant from it. Both movements have such sustained force, like they're repeatedly insisting something, that I haven't felt anywhere else. In the second movement I feel so warm and comforted without knowing why, like when you watch a rainstorm from your window. On the first listen, I was wondering what the photos were, and I pictured a landscape photograph of a field of tall, dry grass, with dark clouds all dramatic up above and a small, old, empty house all alone in the middle. I'm glad to know the photos from Helen were seascapes, a kind of landscape. I feel like I have been waiting to hear a piece about all this for a while, and I think this will be one of those very special songs to me in the future.
This was a livestream? I didn't know that. I am here to watch Yvette and there was no indication it was originally a live stream. Yvette's got a future in film scoring, yo.
Listen to "Behold, l lay in Zion a stone" Saint Thomas Fifth Avenue Festal Evensong April 30,2023. Again, my rare comment to your music 'Conjures enchantment."Trevor Weston is brilliant. Selah
07:30 The fascination with the physical playing technique demonstrates that the visual performance of music is usually more important to the audience than the actual music itself, just like the projections on the guitar are the most memorable aspects of the performance. Similar to extended playing techniques on piano which require playing strings inside the instrument, a more distinctive physical show, and not truly necessary for "the music" or "for the composition".
I assume that all film majors at a university like UCLA take mandatory coursework in film business focused specifically on how to raise money for a multimillion dollar film production...from private investors and business groups, whether for profit or non profit... but in the music departments of the world, this essential knowledge and instruction is nowhere to be found.. get some film moguls on, to explain how it is done, and how composers can apply the same techniques towards raising money for their compositions...
