As someone new to all this (about 9 months or so) I want to say a heartfelt Thank You for this video! You start this hobby/craft and it's the foam, and the synthetics and the poly this and fake that... To see the patterns that got it all started... ring or even up-eye patterns... THAT is what I want to learn!!
Great imitation of the coloring and like the deer hair abdomen. You make the wing construction look so easy- I always seem to struggle with post or wings of deer hair and usually go back to synthetic Hi Viz ..... do you have any advice regarding how much deer hair to use for the wing ? I’m also curious if the 3/0 thread might be easier to use for tying down the deer wing vs a thinner thread. Really enjoy your channel! Thanks
Hi Doug, Deer hair is not all the same as you know. I use the thinnest.diameter I can find to avoid to much flare. 3/0 will work just fine, I used it for years.
This was a very well-presented tying video. I watch a lot of these videos and really enjoyed your narration as well as the camera work. Would like to see this reach a bigger audience. Nicely done.
jUST SO YOU TIERS KNOW ANY TAIL HAIR IS "not" HOLLOW .IT DOES NOT FLOAT.Adding the dear hair for the body "will" make it float, only use light wraps to secure it to the shank. That way you don't crush the air out of the hair.
Great History and storys about your Uncle Clarence..Was wondering when you mentioned Fred Bear if this was the same Fred Bear who started Bear Archery?
Thanks Again Ray. Just watched this tutorial for probably the 10th time and always seem to pick up something I've missed or forgotten since the last time I watched. Anyway, this is such a Great Fly and always produces well. We're planning a fly tying afternoon this weekend with our grandkids and I'm touching up on a few of your patterns for the event. Fly tying Saturday afternoon and fishing Sunday afternoon. Always fun with the kids sitting around the kitchen table tying flies and telling stories. Take Care
Hi, I discovered your channel by looking for more info on this pattern. One of my favorite fly tying channels recently tied this as a request from a subscriber. I love older and regional patterns and their history. This pattern is awesome. Thanks, I just subscribed to your channel.
Simple yet effective fly, similar to a 1/2 back or full back nymph,if it has peacock &/or pheasant tail, you can't go wrong with it,tight lines & bent rods 🤙
Fantastic history lesson! I love that you are show casing Michigan fly tiers and their flies. They are timeless classic fly patterns the still work today. Personally, I prefer fishing classic simple to tie flies. It's amazing that so many fly patterns used today are from yesteryear or just a variation of the original patterns. Thanks for sharing the videos and keep the histories and th flies alive for future fly there's by uploading more videos Ray.
Deadly fly pattern! I tied this dry fly last May or June of 2021after watching your history and tying instruction videos. My first cast yielded a 16 inch Brown Trout! My third cast yielded a 14 inch Brown Trout! I saw trout rising to this fly on almost every drift but my strip set technique was off that day but it was the best day I have ever had on the White River. I have an army of Roberts Drakes ready to do battle in 2022. Thanks for sharing! Tight lines! Cheers!
I keep hearing about an old fly pattern for drakes tied with deer hair. The name sounds like Robert Schiller but I am not sure how it is spelled. Hope you can help.
The Robert’s Yellow Drake just might be my favorite pattern to tie and to fish. I didn’t know Clarence was your Uncle until watching this video; what a great tribute to him ! Nicely tied with great camera work as well. Love your easy going demeanor too. This video should have hundreds of “likes” if not thousands. A1
Howdy Ray, this fly is exactly like the Kiwi muddler developed by WY native Jack Dennis. The deer hair piece on the Kiwi is shorter and shaped like the head on a rattle snake to mimic the profile of a sculpin. It is only tied down one in front and is alllowed to undulate in the currents like the Madinna. The Kiwi also has a couple pieces of pearl crystal flash tied over top of the deer hair strip extending just a little past the length of the strip. Thanks for inventing this fly, it probably was inspired by Dan Baileys marabou muddler and was the harbinger of many future streamer designs.
Hey Ray, do you ever the hackle in front wet fly style, form the Spey collar and then Palmer it back to the hook point and tie it down with wire and counter rib the wire all the way to the eye where it is tied off RDC
I’m a middle aged man now but I own Ray credit for providing a welcoming warm place to learn and receive river intel when I was a younger man. It didn’t matter if you were a guide client he was always a gentleman. Just a classy individual. Thank you Ray.
