4:10 every time over the years when I look at stuff like this or even the Haynes manual (which actually says do everything while on the sidestand!) How do I check the level in the sightglass because it's NOT on centre stand You put 3.5 lts into this bike on the centre stand and the sightglass will be full of oil Do I have to balance bike and check oil level?
Thanks! 10.5 years later this helped me:) I guess you could also do like this to make sure the brake caliper is aligned as good as it can be: Torque the brake caliper before the wheel axle nut (20 Nn). Rotate the wheel and pump the brake a couple of times, before torqueing down the wheel axle clamp screws. That's what you do on sportbikes. Not sure it would make a difference on a DRZ though, but it might :)
@@MuddySump , got ya!, and yes I think you might be correct about that. On the DRZ the caliper is attached from the side, and the alignment is what it is🤔
Thank you for the video...still getting views 10 years on! One thing, for safety reasons I tend to avoid running the motor to turn the chain. I don't want to tempt fate. - 2013 Tiger
My bearings are mint but i have a bit of play with the axle and the bearings. So don't know if i need new axle. The front axle is bad it has a lot more play than the back axle.
@@MuddySump The front axle is 19.88mm. I have just picked up some new front bearings SKF 61904-2RS1. The inside of the bearing is 19.93mm. I do not understand as i have never had play like this on other bike axles. And i have play on this axle with new bearings.
My front sprocket nut is loose. I am reading about the Loctite fix but I am not comfortable with taking off the chain. Can I do it without taking off the chain?
Push the caliper towards the brake disc. It will push the pistons in the caliper back a bit so you can slide the caliper off the brake disc if there’s a lip on the disc
Can’t remember. Think it’s in the middle of nowhere. It’s about 10 miles long. The steps are the only technical part on it but someone commented a while ago saying that it’s been levelled out now
Will this motion pro bearing kit work for bearings like installing crank bearings and transmission bearings in the crank case on dirt bikes to? I notice it says wheel bearing installer but will it do other bearings?
Does this sound normal? Seems like a lot of clicking. I added a new tensioner, kept tension like in your video, heard a click, but now it sounds quite a bit different than when you turn it over. Spark plugs are in.
@@MuddySump I think the bike I’ve got your shop has actually serviced it a couple of times. Its got your stamp in the book. I’ve watched your video on doing the valve clearances. Parts are not cheap for the xc I got but I love riding it. Perfect weight plenty of grunt in all gears. As for the chain and sprocket. It arrived this morning.
Can this be replaced without removing the valve cover? I just did the 24k valve clearance inspection on my 2016 800xc and they were all in spec, but I'm getting occasional cam chain rattle on startup, usually when it's hot and has sat a few minutes. Currently at 28,500 miles. The rattle lasts 5-7 seconds when it does happen.
You can take it out but you’ll need to take the crank cover off so you can keep tension on the chain until you put the new one in and turn the engine over to release the clip.
The manual calls for turning the crank backwards 1/4 turn before doing 4 CW Turns. Doing that has always resulted in a jumped tooth for me, requiring repetition of all steps (remove tensioner, ladder, camshafts, reset...). The manual is utter garbage at times.
What if after you fill the expansion bottle to the minimum mark and run the bike until the fan comes on, the coolant level rises on its own to the maximum mark?
@@MuddySump if I could bother you to ask another question, how would I go about getting the air out? Squeezing the air hose does not release any more bubbles
@@wyattcooper2041 When its ran up to temperature and the fan comes on it should pull the water from the expansion bottle into the radiator. If it's going up and down all the time try a new cap
Fantastic video(s)! I must be missing something obvious here, as my local Triumph dealer wants £900 for the 12k valve check on a 2014 Tiger 800. So if the valves are all good and nothing needs changing this seems like a very straight forward job for £900. I do understand that if the cams have to come out and shims sorted etc then this is naturally a much much bigger job. surely there should be two different costs perhaps from Triumph?
I think they’ll charge you more if they have to adjust the valves and that will be the price to just check them. Where about are you that they charge £900? Staffordshire triumph seems the worst with £1205 for a 12k on a first gen 800.
Get a Harley. All you’ve got to do with those is change the oil. Worked there before triumph and wondered why I’ve gone somewhere to do more work for the same money 😅
Mine was the xc with the same risers as standard. They fit on still but you can’t fit them at any angle. Still got to make sure the cables can move freely
I love how simple this looks except whoever worked on my bike last fitted the pin cover so tight that im buggered at first of the easy stuff! FFS, great vid though. 👍
Thank you for that, ive just got my spring back from an overhaul and had the circlip and bottom ring seperate so wondered how to reinstall it, many thanks
I ride almost always in deep silty sand. At 12000 miles I decided to change my chain and sprockets. The old chain seemed fine, however. Front sprocket was chewed up, rear seemed fine. I put a hybrid sprocket on rear, with aluminum insert, new front and new chain. 5000 miles later, the hybrid sprocket, which actually weighed nearly same as stock, thick steel one, had cracked. I put the original back on. Bike is a beast.
I thought they were meant to be sideways. Thinking about it though, I can see the maximum thickness of cotter pin metal is shear resisting the nut from twisting loose.
