Aloha! My name is Randy and live in Maui Hawaii - zone 12. I'm here to share with you all what I love: gardening and my miniature schnauzers Mimi, Yuuki and Magnum. Catch me on IG: RandyOnMaui
I love your doggies and the roses. I kill roses 🤣🤣...orchids and palms seem to be the only things that survive with me!! Lovely garden paradise u got there!!
I have 4 roses that are struggling-think it’s cause they’re in the wrong growing zone. I just learned I’m a zone 13 🥵 and those were a zone 11 rose 🤣 it’s all part of gardening.. there are lots of casualties before success! Thank you and thanks for watching!
I saw another grower say that she discovered birds eating her orchid buds. Could that’s be happening to you? I’d like to see a video of propagating keiki’s from canes? Is that possible?
Oh I think that was Kelly from Orchids in Paradise that has that issue. Fortunately that little black bird isn’t found on Maui. I read about that bird and it does indeed eat orchid buds, it’s called a bulbul, which is an invasive species. I’m thinking it’s thrips or neem oil that is drying out my spikes.
@@kc-a7907 don’t have a video, but can work on one for you. I’ve toted my Honohono with me for 5yrs now and haven’t killed it yet so I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned with you so far. 👍🏼
We've had an aphid infestation lately...only recently got it under control....but I lost a bunch of jumbo hibiscus 😢. I'm just too afraid to plant anymore 😭. Amazing method tho. I might be tempted to try 😅
You got nothing to lose and can gain soo much if it works for you! Good luck! And thanks for the reminder, I need to start my systemics on my aphid prone roses and hibiscus.
I've been following your channel since the Maui days. I'm from the Caribbean and a lot of your growing methods from there was very similar to what we do here for our orchids. So happy to see that your plants are still going strong!! Thanks for the great content.
Gorgeous, love those blooms! I gave mine a dry rest but it has not bud up yet! I guess I gave it a bit too late! Anyways yours look great, thanks for sharing and happy growing 😊
Has it warmed up where you are yet? We were in the low 70s for a while during the day, low 60s all winter-when it reached mid 70s during the day is when I started to see growth on the canes.
I like the comment " get it , it's so small , no one will know you bought a new orchid" LOL. , I hear ya! I just bought one about 6 weeks ago and it's doing good but started to have a few leaves turn yellow , still firm but maybe too much water ? I grow more cooler " Australian " Dendrobiums here in SF and they're kept outside, so this is my first indoor Denbrobium
Sometimes they drop their leaves when they’re acclimating to a new environment. Just keep an eye on it. I tend to keep indoor orchids on the dry side (we have our ac on during the day) and giving them a good soak in the sink then allowing them to drip dry once a week. Good luck!
I got a Rhyncostylis and a couple cat seedlings from Akatsuka recently. The box garden stores sell a lot of phals but occasionally have collectors orchids.. I’m always checking.
I love your orchids😌🤲💞The Neofinetia are so neatly potted👏🌟Great job! I grow some here in Japan. They are really tough orchids and put up with the cold winters. It's already snowed twice. Your huge Vanda is amazing😱🙌💞And those flowers are beautiful🥰
Hi Randy, welcome back! Great update video, thanks for sharing. Your neofenitias looking great in their cocodama moss. Can you please film it when you are making one next time? Thanks and happy growing 😊
Aloha Mary! Thank you! I will def record it next time I do a neofinetia kokedama. I am using Trac Mcnguyen’s method for doing kokedama using a small mesh basket for the interior-he’s on YT and his tutorial is awesome! Happy Growing!!
your orchids look good in your new shade house, congrats on your competition prizes too! Maybe you could film the orchids at your local orchid society meeting sometime or a visit to your local orchid nurseries. Love your fur babies they are cute.
Will def start recording at the orchid society meeting. The orchid society is due for a nursery tour though-it’s in the works. Will bring you along if that happens! Thanks for watching!
They’re doing ok, one died-think I didn’t pack the soil around its roots so well. They didn’t perform well for the year. Occasional flower and little growth. I cut them back and cleaned them up for spring. Added manure and Rose-tone. The new growth is promising. So hopefully this will be their year to shine!
I'm watching this video because I feel the same way. A vanda basket costs $1300.00 . I collects the tomato stakes from a nearby furniture workshop. Took them home and did my thing.
Wish I lived closer I'd be willing to help and take some. Yeah I miss orchid guild meetings was nice to bring in orchids for the auction, get supplies, and talk with everyone!! Really miss our once a year big orchid show too!! I hope you have a safe journey to Maui 🌸✨!!! Wishing you all the best 🌟
We are moving back to Maui! I ended up throwing away many orchids from my collection. My initial plan was to donate them to my local OS and they can auction them off but with the pandemic going on and no in person meetings-that was a no. Remaining plants will go to family.
