It literally took a 2 minute Google search to refute this video. The EPA absolutely says mold could affect your health in addition to having a guide on how to safely remove it, including mold testing. This whole vid is cap.
Whaatttt…. As an inspector this information is soo bogus. I was in the army for 10 years. I lived in many barracks with mold. Ended up in the hospital for mold toxicity! Diagnosed with a number of things that I no longer have after getting out and living in a clean home! Go live in a house with mold for 6 months and remake this video. Would love to see your response then. Absolute false information.
Based on my personal mold exposure experience at higher than outside concentrations, I will say unscientifically that mold absolutely can mess with you physically, neurologically, emotionally and psychologically. The amount of airborne mold outside my home is quite alarming to me (although not completely unexpected) and I am now close to zero airborne mold inside my home now.
Tell me why a contractor and/or subcontractor would EVER run waterlines on exterior walls then insulate over the top of them! Seems to me insulation should be the first thing on the inside of exterior walls then waterlines.
Keep an eye on things. Sometimes moisture only enters a crawlspace after a severe weather event, or seasonal snow melt which might not be a big deal to you. If moisture is entering a crawlspace regularly and their is poor ventilation then mold will grow on the floor joists and sheathing. If the issue persists then the concrete can become unreliable. Easy fixes include proper grade and downspouts to get water away from the house, and reduce vegetation around the home. More challenging fixes include the installation of a new french drains or exterior water proofing after excavation. It is also possible that you have a high water table and a sump pump might reduce some of that hydrostatic pressure.
People, do not listen to this guy. There is ABSOLUTELY scientific proof that mold can have adverse effects on health. Get him to answer questions about CIRS, or HLA gene. Funny how he talks about scams.
Wow. I wish it was funny but it chronically sad. Air samples suck, but for the opposite reason you dislike them. The warning on radon is mostly because it’s nuclear, the data show’s that I would have to hang out in a basement that’s at action level or 4 picocuries for 60 year solid, for a less than 1% increase in risk of lung cancer. Reason why there is no set limit is because there is no quantitive data to prove a set amount of a particular mold is bad for everyone. As for air samples. I ran them next to mold, came back that outdoors is way worse than the not tight home with no ERV. I run hundreds of samples and unless I target them, they typically show nothing. I stick with moisture meter and surface samples to verify mostly. Or just judge whether there is condition 2 of condition 1 on a surface. Moving on. Yes, CIRS, which is a diagnoses that has blood markers and I’ve seen so many with this issue and seen them come back to life when they had issues taken care of and took the medication the doctor gave them. They’ve called my boss in tears because they could think again and felt like they used too again. Hey, I get it, you never had the issue. I can say it’s sucked and even though I was having all these problems I couldn’t believe it was mold. How binders got rid of migraines, I can’t explain. The dementia I thought I was having was scary and thankfully gone. SBS as outlined in the bioaerosols book, which you never mention and happens to be the gold standard. You just love the EPA because it doesn’t really deal much with mold and leaves it to other agency’s. Yeah, that book outlines and defines sick building syndrome as people feeling ill in a building. Then you have Building related illnesses, like legionnaires, which is considered a BRI because you caught it in a building. Worth noting no set limit for exposure to histoplasma, guess it’s not harmful to breathe in because the EPA hasn’t set a limit. It’s a mold so I guess it’s in the air everywhere anyways. Then people Claim they have histoplasmosis, so fake until the EPA sets a limit, it isn’t real. That’s your logic. The environmental protections agency…. The agency that sets limits on car emissions. Let’s ignore the American counsel of industrial hygienist and solely concentrate on the EPA. They also haven’t set exposure limits to legionella exposure either. Dirty cooling towers are fine. Even if the ERV has an improper intake next to one, you assume the HEPA filter, which is tested outside the machine, it going to preform the same way it does independent of the machine it’s installed into. Then you pretend that the full volume of air in the home will travel through the machine. Without linear flow , it’s never going to happen. And yes it’s an allergen. For some people, it’s much like a peanut allergy. But what’s the EPA’s set limit for peanut butter exposure again?? I guess my son can bring a sandwich to school with him now cause there is no set limit. You may want to rethink everything you said I this video. It’s dangerously misleading. I wish it wasn’t!!! I hate seeing what happens to the 1/4 of the population that have a genetic inability for their immune systems to target and help remove certain toxins.

Ice and water can both exist at 32, but to say that it’s only one degree is misleading. It takes a lot of btus of latent energy to go from ice to water.
You are correct and that doesn't even account for the affects of pressure and turbulence in a system, but if all other factors remain the same at some temperature their is a tipping point and until it is reached the water will be liquid, but then after that tipping point it will become solid. That is what I was trying to say, but I might not have been clear.
I really liked your video. I'm in the Houston, TX area and have learned a lot over the years. The TV news only partially provides the necessary information. Cover the hose bibs; check. Open cabinets; check. But NEVER goes into the FACT that it is HEAT from the living space (that you so well covered) that prevents the pipes from freezing. Hose bib pipes on unheated walls WILL freeze and burst once the temperature gets into the teens. (they don't break the valves themselves; they break the thinner pipes in the walls) Pay attention to where your hose bibs are and if heat can get to that wall. I was around in 1989 when, due to the loss of power (rotating power outages), pipes burst all over Houston. Knowing this, for "The Great Texas Freeze" of 2021, I had already drained all of the water from my house pipes. (I failed with my pool equipment, but that is a different story. Live and learn.) New lessons. Remove plugs from pool equipment when there is a power loss; because there is no power to circulate the water to prevent it from freezing using "freeze mode". Leverage heat from the earth to keep things from freezing. A bunch of my pool equipment froze and burst pipes and the heater because I didn't know to remove the plugs and let them drain. But, I have a fake boulder over the water valves used for my in-floor cleaning. That survived just fine in 2021; good thing too as there are a TON of pipes for that. For hose bibs, I recently bought some Freeze Misers. Check them out.
Hello, experiencing a winter freeze right now. The pipes are ok so far. 🙏🏼 I watched your video & respect your expertise. In addition to taking temperature readings (for the graph you demonstrated), what general factors will tell us the pipes are in a safe zone? I assume whenever the outdoor temp is below 33 deg, then there is a threat for frozen pipes? Lastly, is it ok to remove all of the vent styrofoam covers to the crawlspace when the outdoor temperature consistently stays above 33 deg - to avoid radon poisoning &/or mold growth? Thank you.
Hey, When the temperature is below 32F outside the pipes could freeze if not used for a long enough period of time. However, There is going to be heat loss from your home and from the soil directly below the house which will help to keep the pipes above freezing. There are many factors to consider, but it is a safe assumption that any plumbing located or passing through an exterior wall or vented crawlspace will be at risk of freezing. Pipes located in the middle or interior of the house should be risk free if the house is a comfortable temperature. If you run an exhaust vent such as your kitchen vent, bathroom vent, laundry dryer, or even a fireplace, cold air from the outside will have to rush into the house to replace the are that is being pushed out the vent or chimney. This can increase the risk of pipes freezing. So be aware of your pipes at 32F and if your house is around 70F you might not need to worry about your pipes until 15F or colder. Yes, you can remove those foam covers during the warmer months, but keep in mind that current building science is leaning towards not venting crawlspaces, but that is with the understanding that the crawlspace would be a conditioned space and mechanically ventilated. The idea behind this change is to manage the air entering the crawlspace as air can drive humidity into the crawlspace and because of the cooler surfaces in the crawlspace if the relative humidity is just right then the water vapor will condense and cause mold anyway. Also radon mitigation is something that can also change based on what vents are running in your house. Meaning, the vents in a crawlspace alone may not take care of radon issues. It is good to do long term monitoring. I use a detector from Airthings that cost about $150 and helps understand how my house changes radon levels season to season.
My pipes in my cottage had been frozen for four days and I watched your video this morning. I got the woodstove roaring to heat up the place more and opened the cupboard doors under the sinks in the bathroom and the kitchen. Then I went outside and put a small space heater near the pipes in my exposed crawlspace. after a couple hours your tips worked wonderfully. In Wisconsin, we could not use Edison base fuses because they are light sockets (A 10 watt or a 300 watt bulb have the same size base). We had to use Type-S fuses. They have different sizes, 15 amp is smaller than 20, and a 15 or 20 amp would fall out of a 30 amp socket. Also fuses can have a time delay element in them. A fuse with no time delay like a 15 amp will pop just a fraction above it's rating, depending on the size of it's heat sink a time delay fuse will hold a few seconds before blowing.

Ok....I have huge beef with Western Peer Reviewed scholarly journals, what is considered "proven", and the political agenda of the EPA. Additionally, mycelium, mycology, and all things fungi are absolutely understudied. For example, a mycologist I know sequenced the DNA of hundreds of new fungi species each year. In regards to the problematic companies that prey on homeowners who are scared. That makes me so mad! I do appreciate your explanations as far as getting rid of the moisture. I live in Humboldt county. A living, breathing moss land lol! I know you are a contractor, unfortunately here, most of us have to rent the cost-of-living is so high and our opportunities are so limited (well jobs that pay living wage or a homeowning wage). Most of the homes here are very old and beat up. I've got a huge dehumidifier and fan going right now in my room I know you disagree with me, but I absolutely am suffering from mold exposure from a yearly flooded 200 year old farmhouse that i had to move out of. I couldn't figure out why I was getting so many shocks, and why I was getting all this weird black crap coming out of my sinuses, my eyes and my ears and my nose, and all of a sudden all my hair kind of turned black at the roots and fell out. I don't know what year you made this, but there are connections mold, exposure, and sinuses, and all that junk. But still, you were on point with finding the source of the water. I think some people don't have the ability to flush the spores from their system. I think about 3% of the population I'm not positive on the data. I appreciate that you want to communicate a well-rounded and well thought out argument, but I would like to state that am truly sick and it's not psychosomatic or anything like that. Anyhow, I don't want to sound like an asshole so I'm gonna go but thank you so much for the informative video. I hope you have a wonderful wonderfully successful career.
You are very sick, I wouldn't disagree. I would ask you to keep an open mind if you want to get better. There is some research suggesting that people who get very sick after mold exposure are not so much affected by the mold or the spores as they are by a biotoxin their body is not good at removing. Mold releases mycotoxin, and your body might suck at handling it. That guy in the video telling everyone not to worry about mold is probably part of the 75% of people who are able to remove the biotoxins before they become a problem. If it doesn't bother him, why should it bother you? That's logical! If you don't like that logic, you may want to see if he minds if you run your blood through his body for a few weeks to see if his body will remove the toxins for you. That's science! And equally logical! Anyway, there's newer research that has some doctors claiming the mycotoxins from the mold aren't making you sick at all because actually there is family of bacteria that live with "toxic" mold colonies that release the biotoxin that makes your body sick. Dr Andrew Heyman says he no longer tests for mycotoxins when treating mold illness patients because it's the bacteria toxins that matter. So if Heymans research proves to be correct, that not afraid of mold guy is right. Mold doesn't hurt you. I think its important to recognize that our healthcare providers have not quite figured out exactly how the illness works, and we're about as good at treating it as we are at giving good nutrition advice only to find out 10-20 years later we got it ass backwards there's a lot of snake oil out there you have to steer around, and just as many clueless doctors in denial that will tell you it's all in your head.. Videos like this are about as helpful as people who will tell you autism, ADHD, and left handedness aren't real because they don't feel left handed or autistic, so people just need to try harder. Sorry for the book but I was just watching some bedtime RU-vid here in my snowy driveway before I fall asleep in my car because while it's cold, it's not overrun with mold like my house and I'd rather sleep balled up next to my steering wheel than struggle through one more day sounding like I have brain damage. Unless you have a large abnormal buildup of mold that you have been breathing on a regular basis, you are very sick due to having a biological system that is weaker than normal and not able to handle it. Find out what's causing that and fix it. Mold is everywhere. If its only making you sick and no one else, your body is the issue. Not the mold.
Very informative! We're just in the process of having our 37 year old deck replaced with a new one. Lots of upkeep over the years, but it was time. Pretty incredible to see the differences in code here in Minnesota from 1986 to today. Our new deck is being installed with helical piles. I noticed that you didn't mention them. The ones that were installed go down 12', to some really solid soil. The first several feet in our yard are pretty spongy, and the original footing which went down 3-4 feet sunk a bit over the years. The helical piles supposedly have no movement or settling. Interesting process to watch as they're being installed.
Not true!!! I almost lost my life to a water damaged apartment. As soon as I left, neuropathy went away, my Dysautonomia improved over 75%. I am living proof that the mycotoxins coming from old water damage can lower immune system and you can never recover from that. Ask Dave Aspery
This video is a great demonstration of why you should get a specialist to test your well (it's not that expensive). The reason to get a good well test (at the well) is because it is the only part of your water system that can't be fixed. Pumps can be replaced, plumbing can be repaired, but ultimately the well/aquifer flow rate is the ultimate limiting factor of how much water you can use. A couple of minor points: 1) When the pump flow rate is higher than what the well/aquifer can deliver, you can install a storage tank. The well pumps into the storage tank at its own pace and another pump draws water from the tank and sends it to the house. The well/aquifer is still the ultimate limiting factor, but the tank allows for a continuous supply water to the house as the well recovers. 90% of the wells in my area are set up this way. The other 10% run off of wells that flow enough running dry is not an issue. 2) You don't have to manually shut the pump off if it runs dry. The control box has a timer that automatically restarts the pump after a pre-set amount of time. 3) "Tributaries"?
I have mold spots on different walls caused because there was a water leak from pipes in the walls, but never dried, wouldn’t that definitely tell me their is mold in between the walls, never ever get sick in 20 years but a few times, I have, same symptoms, headaches, little feverish, no energy, been sneezing more Than I used to,would kilz prevent any dispersed mold
You are completely wrong about the effects of mold on human health, and the effects of other environmental diseases created by a variety of chemicals that define sick building syndrome. Environmental medicine is not taught in medical schools because that would open the door to actual disease pathogenesis, which are based upon starvation and poisoning from industrial chemicals like pesticides, heavy metals like fluoride added to water, and numerous other factors related to processed food. We are all different with respect to chemical and EMF sensitivity; some are so sensitive, living in a traditional home is a city with WIFI, cellphones, cell towers, and pesticide-driven farming is not possible, while others seem to live normally until they are given a cancer diagnosis. Research with patients over the past 45 years, and spending time with researches not funded by mainstream medicine, has resulted in a very different approach to diagnosis and treatment of chronically ill people. Open your mind to the possibility you know nothing about this subject as it relates to human illness, and instead focus on how to cleanup a toxic home that can actually help someone that traditional medical providers cannot.

In the United States 1 in 15 homes have radon levels that should be reduced. In the High Rockies were we live, 57% of all homes have radon levels above the EPA action level. This number includes houses that we have inspected with and without active radon mitigation system installed and operating.
@@jaytab3686 No Wind Mitigation in our area, the closest thing we have to a natural disaster mitigation service in our area is a Wildfire Mitigation service but that is handled by our local fire departments. Radon mitigation is handled by local contractors and Colorado requires all Radon Measurement and Radon Mitigation service providers to be licensed by the state.
