I swear, I get excited to actually buy this game everytime I hear you speak of how they absolutely resolved every gameplay issue I had with Three Houses, and improve some of the more ancient ones. Also, I'm a bitch for the particular strategic gameplay of the FE series. I also find the graphics very pleasant (even if more and more removed from the atmosphere a game where every party member can die at any moment should have). But then I see the emblems...I see the "waifuness" of the characters and story...and I take a step back EVERYTIME. It's been one year and a half since the first time I told myself "It seems fun, but everything else feels so wrong" Also, if they truly want to keep the turn rewind mechanic, I seriously want for them to add an option to deactivate it, and the hardcore mode from Xcom. I want the game to save after every player phase (not every action, since I misclicked too many of my soldiers into certain death in Xcom). Just give us THE OPPOSITE OPTION, PLEASE! At least I want to be catered as much as people not enjoying the motherfucking core mechanic of the entire series. Even if Engage really seems, from the looks, a game without the right atmosphere to support permadeath. In Path of Radiance the characters took a moment to aknowledge their companions deaths after every battle. It would feel very odd to have a battle go very wrong just for the characters to keep smiling, giggling and anime waifuing like a bunch of otaku psychotic psychopaths. P.S. About your experience with resetting after too many units died. Due to personal reasons, I could not reset during my very first playthrough of a FE. The experience was...cruel. It was also my first strategy game ever, so I was exceptionally young, impulsive, and unskilled. It was brutal. I lost everyone but the protagonist and one other character in 4 chapters. The story seemed much darker and the stakes much higher, but that's not the point. The point is I involuntarily noticed a thing. The real safety the devs always put in place against exceptionally unskilled people. The last resort... Have you ever noticed how untouchable the protagonists get after a few levels? Byleth, Ike, Marth. At their max level (granted, Byleth doesn't really have a max level) they one or two shot everything in the game. Entire armies crash on their swords. To truly soft lock you in a FE game, is almost impossible. My very first run was almost a solo Ike run, and it worked just fine.

I had to play them back in the day in japanese after I had finished the pal release. It is impossible to play through the first game and then not wanting to play the others. That felt almost like a torture. So I printed out every line of available translated text and that resulted in a pile of papers so high it could rival a phone book. Was it worth the trouble? I'd do it again 1000 times! The whole experience (including the challenging premium disk) is still among the best I ever had during my video game carreer. Most of it has to do with Camelot charm. They got that special sauce in their games, just like games by Treasure or Rare. What a shame that they are only making sports games for nintendo nowadays. That's like using a Ferrari for pizza deliveries only.

Most of these complaints sound like it's your own fault. You complain that the game is hard but you holded out all of your characters on promotion until they were Level 40. I'd say it's best to promote at Level 25 to Level 30, at least before the Devil's Tail fight. Not only that but you're severely under-leveled. For example, at 9:42, why is Chester only at Level 11 at the HAPRY POOL FIGHT? By the time you get to that fight you should at least be Level 21 or heck even Level 30 promoted if you train in Elven Forest. You know you can egress out to start battles over and train right? And that leads to another point, the random field battles do not have to done over again. Just egress and don't step on the same tiles next time.

I was a fire emblem hardcore player. And yes, I played permanent death every time. I would go hours to progress through the story by getting the best strategies. But I was 6-8 at the time, and 8-10 years passed. I forgot how to play, and my strategies were useless because I moved that mindset to chess. But once you move, you can never go back. In a chess perspective, you don’t have xp, strength and stats. You just have pieces. So I was really good at chess, and turned out to be a rookie in fire emblem. Strange, isn’t it? I now think that permanent death should be an option instead of a forced play through mechanic, since you have no mercy. No saves, just the permanent death there. People who die die, and no going back. My years of hardcore fire emblem has ended, but I still have a mindset of a tactician. Still, I have ended to this day to be a casual player. Without concerns. That’s why as a casual one, I prefer to be an option.

13:36...idk but it feels like you didnt think this through. make a big change to a series that fans have been waiting on for nearly decades to show people, who dont give a fuck about the game that "they are willing to evolve" .....? HUH?!?!? FUCK THAT. as if any person whos not interested in the first games would then be interested in those big changes? at this point you completely offend all fans for the try of getting new people into the franchise. i cant remember a point in time where this has worked out well. at this point youd rather rename the series and give it a branch title. like digimon does with its "adventures" and "world" titles or like final fantasy did it with the "tactics" suffix. otherwise people will completely riot.

Well, it really is hard to say any relevant tips off the limited view i get from the outside, but assist mode is there for a reason. If you feel like you cheated yourself, the only answer i can come up with is to slowly crank those assist features back to default as you get a better feel for the game. At the same time, i was someone who jived with the fast pace, and also wonder if it has something to do with the different styles that come from the fundamental separation between projectiles and melee... For me, i found myself constantly getting in close and using melee, relying only on range for puzzles and out of reach foes. Endgame mostly expects the player to be able to balance the pros and cons of both and use them interchangeably, and as close as i can get, charged vs uncharged projectiles do have very different flows in and of themselves. Every single style has its own flow, and some may be more suited for the faster paced game than others. For as good as i got at 3 of them, i practically never guarded unless i was grinding out the cumulative totals achievements, despite recognizing its advantages when mastered. And then equipment abilities only take the customization to another level... XD Yeah, i love the game, and i dont need to justify it to myself, but helping others takes a lot more context and possibly even an understanding of personal psychology to give anything more than surface level help. The "pain" is part of the experience to a certain extent, as it is the joy of overcoming a challenge, especially when the game isnt holding back, that makes the experience so rewarding; there is even an entire genre of "rage games" that capitalize on that exact phenomenon.

Imitation is the wrong word; if it was that direct there'd be accusations of plagerism and many, many lawsuits. It's similar to X game, but that doesn't mean it's trying to imitate it. Lost Eidolons quite frankly I bought and played for a few chapters... but the big monsters are WAY too much of a pain in the ass and the story is contrived as fuck to screw you over without any player input. (Girl comes to you randomly to ask for your help to save her ALREADY MARRIED fucking sister - who was also ALREADY married BEFORE she got married a second time = and this is a fucking love interest for MC. How??? BUT the girl decides after getting out of said predicament to make EVERYTHING worse for everyone involved, by ganking the lord that forced her to marry him... and fucking EVERYONE who had anything to do with saving her right over) From there it spirals to you are a contingient of another Lord, who is perhaps a good one... but not the guy you've got to worry about. There's some bullshit about a conquering emporer that as far as I can tell doesn't remotely matter at all... and apparently the end boss is just absolute BULLSHIT to fight. You also spend a good chunk of the game trying to convince said random asshole female and her even more assholish sister (who is ALSO somehow a love interest...) that she did nothing wrong. She's LITERALLY the reason you're even in this whole situation. The devs just did not think about that point at all. Definitely not Fire Emblem. It's not even a good attempt to mirror 3 Houses; because you get barely any way to actually TRAIN your freaking units to be what you want them to be. [Frankly the dumbassed monsters in 3 houses were my least favorite part of the game in the first place, so copying that crap did this game no favors]

I beat this once, was hyped, I was disappointed, that lead to distaste, I don’t want to kill Jeralt or Byleth, when you said you don’t recommend it to Three Houses players, I agree, but you need the context, who’s the game for? Ik ppl enjoy the game, and all the lore power to them, the gameplay and maps are great, the story breaks the game for me I’m afraid. Great video!!

My experience and concept of gaming was really never the same again after that glorious summer in 1998 when I received Shining Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga for my birthday (aged 11!). Christ, what on earth was Sega thinking when it came to the games it released in the West for the Saturn when it had some of the greatest games of all time that made it so popular in Japan. It has been a yardstick since that only the choicest games have met. (Golden Sun, Deus Ex, Baldurs Gate for example)

My favorite is Shining Force II's May. Not that she has much going narratively, but she's always stuck out to me as a very uniquely "Shinning Force" type character, and her design and battle sprites were always cool to me (being the only character of the Ranger/Bow Knight class in the entire game, she gets to show off her own character design more clearly in her battle sprite than some others). Not very many games have centaur archers in them, either. Masqurin is up there, though.

This is the craziest review I’ve ever seen. Much of the early stuff you list is preference based nit picking and the points about strategy at the end (eg peter being a “necessity”) and pacing are simply wrong. While Peter is definitely the best character many others can pretty easily keep pace. The lacking of a breaking point as you say seems silly as you can save from the battle map and at any town and can thus put the game down virtually any time you want.

I like how FEH legit went "Anna is a multidimensional entity, just like the gods and the dragons" and that's that lol or rather... in FEH, the one who suggests the ritual to bring a Summoner from another world, using the special (and unique to a Summoner) weapon Breibadikk is... Anna. She is the one who knows about a weapon that opens dimentional rifts and rules a Knight Order in a kingdom named after a God of OPENING (Askr). OH I THINK YOU CRACKED THE CODE

Casual can still have punishment aspects to it: in a playthrough that you can't grind for EXP outside main chapters, a character dying early becomes weaker and weaker as the chapters difficulty increase...it can come to the point of not being able to complete a chapter, a "game over" "softlock".

Shining Force 3 is my second favourite game of all time after Final Fantasy VII. I recently played Scenario 2 & 3 for the first time and it was an absolute dream come true after spending so many years wanting to experience them. I even tried playing them years ago with a printed paper translation, I wanted to play them that badly. For anyone else who’s played these, don’t forget about Shining Holy Ark. That’s also an incredibly under appreciated game.

three years late to this, but whats a pretty interesting tangential detail to the Crest of Ernest bit, is that each of the crests lost to history (Aubin, Noa, Chevalier, Timethoes and Ernest) are only seen in their major form. and while its clear the first for have a specific origin in setting, the fact that Fodlan is the only place to have gone all in on this Inherited/Gifted magic of Crests and bits like the consistency of Anna knowing about the Dragon Gates or at least conveniently working near them. all gives some interesting credence to the idea that Crests/Holy Blood could potentially be concepts in most FE settings just the culture and story had no reason to discover them so Anna's crest of Ernest hides out in most settings unseen and not helping, but this also results in Fodlan's Anna being extra secretive and also finding no reason to extend the trust she does in other places, because surely somebody would ask questions about her truely unique crest that she wants to keep under wraps as it creates trouble about a crest who's progenitor is left unwritten. Really adds to the idea that the Anna of each game isn't really "Native" to that world, and the merchant clan of Anna and her family being gifted knowledge and means to fan out and also a need to blend in. the thing i like best about all of that I could even seen the idea that maybe they're given name isn't actually Anna at all, but something that could easily be shortened or extended then shortend to Anna, Morgan -> Morgana -> Ana for example. This to some extent even works to account for Feena who hadn't taken up the merchant trade so chose not to adopt the name conveniently dodging around any questions about her and Anna by proxy. All of this is to say depending on the game the degree of this Anna is a character knowledgeable of the web of connected timelines and chronologies who in some sense recognizes the players observation of the tale and acts as a guide of sorts, even the strange locations of older games secret shops or the mostly not secret nature of the member card she has you get in 3H on top of the semi consistent 4th wall breaking either in her choice of lines or more directly, even down to the fact that secret shops consistently contain rare and valuable items you otherwise have very short supply of dracoshields and goddess icons and the like basically being relics or treasure, and yet Anna finds herself in position to have the vast majority of these items in the games that feature in map secret shops or otherwise one of if not the only suppliers of them. In short amazing theory on the dragonpact idea for Anna and her brood of Anna's even if the games don't give us much to go on in a lot of cases. and to some extent thats fine, though Fodlan did her dirty by not giving her supports. (and making Trickster such a crappy class, but thats besides the point.)

I just did my first "ironman" with a blind path or radiance run and it was fun. Yes i got half of the characters killed and missed out on a ton of receuitment but thay gives the game more replayability. 😊My only reccomendtion if you're going to do an iron man is to play on normal instead of hard mode. Doing both could make it impossible to progress especially on recent games.

Great video. Fascinating for nerds who have played both games religiously for decades. I have had these same thoughts many times, i.e. that Shining Force 2 is objectively better in so many ways, but there are tangible and intangible aspects that make Shining Force 1 better for me. Some immediate disagreements on memorability: The kraken battle is infinitely more memorable and better in every way than the two ship battles from Shining Force 1. I might give a more thoughtful response later with other details for discussion.

I never thought about it but there is a difference in the battles. It might be mostly that SF2 relies way more heavily on the overworld. SF1 had a lot of unique battles. SF2 had a lot of grinding battles. There were some unique ones though. The caves (they had to engineer their own software based parallax scrolling for the cave spotlight and cloud backgrounds), the kraken, the chessboard, some of the town fights. Battles that had guests or units that changed sides. But SF1 has a lot more battles that stand out as unique. The ship battles, laser eye, orb cave battle, circus battle, skull castle, kane battle, runefaust castle/ramladu, the tower to get Alef/Torasu, there's lots.

Well, the first two games are widely and wisely considered as masterpieces for 20+ years, and this one just got a meh. Not playing with the original characters is one of the reasons, those flaws that were mentioned here, and the 3D graphics were disappointing to me (they should stayed pixel art).

when the game was in game pass I genuinely enjoyed playing crosscode, even with the difficult puzzles and complex mechanics. but I felt like that made this whole game even more fleshed out. all in one game, and I didn't have to switch to another one to experience fun combat, challenging puzzles or an intriguing storyline. this game includes multiple genres in a way that leaves you satisfied and not too overwhelmed with how much there is to do sadly though, when I reached the "final boss" of the main story I couldn't beat it. my level was too high to get enough exp from the side quests I ignored and too low to sufficiently power up the circuits to have even the slightest chance at the fight without being beaten in just 2-3 hits. I completely forgot about being able to lower the settings to make the fight easier and just ended up never finishing it. still had the game installed though, long enough to finally buy it myself with the money I earned. and I am so glad I did. despite knowing all about the plot twists and characters, it was still so much fun to live through these experiences with them. I can't help but get emotional when luke and lea are spending their time in vermillion wasteland, trying to find a way out, together. this time it was actually a lot easier to play through the game, probably because I already had some experience I feel like the only thing this game really lacks is more "tutorials" for its mechanics. most of it is just figuring it out by yourself. to me, that's a lot of fun, as long as it's not almost impossible to figure it out. but sometimes crosscode really doesn't make it easy to find a solution
