And it was live on Terrestrial TV too! I'm in that throng of Arsenal fans somewhere, 18! A bit older now and nothing has come close to that feeling, on that day at Anfield. A truly unforgettable experience, and what's more, travelling in the coaches leaving Highbury, the fire in the team that day, and the fans, was Awesome. We knew we could do it. And we did! I've seen the film, have the recording of the match on DVD, but thanks for posting this! If it's in our hands at the end of next season, we'll do it then too. But it won't be as awesome as this.
As a man utd fan i can safely say this was probably the most dramatic ending to any league season i can remember, and it definitely tops citys aguero moment as it was the top 2 at the time and arsenal had to win by two clear goals, that was something special...
I remeber watching this on ITV when i was 20. I'm not an Arsenal fan but was fed up with Liverpool winning everything in sight so was rooting for Arsenal that night. Arsenal needing to win and liverpool 1-0 up. The Liverpool fans were cock sure they'd won it by the singing taking place on the terraces. When Thomas scored I was over the moon!
What was better - this or Agueroooooooooooooooo!!!! Even though I was too young for this game, I think this. Top two teams play on the final day. One teams needs a 2-0 win at a bloody fortress. They get the second goal in the 91st minute, which by today’s extra time standards, is like the 99th minute. Amazing.
Of all my memories as an Arsenal fan this is by far the best, makes me feel happy every time I think of it. Also, it reminds me of classy opponents, Liverpool what a team and club they are.
I remember watching this live on TV with a plastic Liverpool fan (the rest of us were Wolves fans). About 10 seconds before Thomas scored, I said, 'oh well, Liverpool deserve it I suppose (glum faced). Then 'that' happened! I remember seeing Thomas celebrating his goal and he was flipping around like a salmon on a hot deck not knowing how to celebrate enough to merit the enormity of his achievement - still makes me smile.
Talk about bad losers Liverpool Arsenal wasn't given a prayer Liverpool didn't lose with dignity refusing to shake the hands of the Arsenal players poor show even after all these years
Thats a modern cynical tactic, it wasn't seen as the sporting act in 1980s football. I actually think Barnes does well to reclaim possession from Adams in the first place.
Arguably, it was the greatest and most dramatic top-flight Title win ever. Any Arsenal fan at the match that night must have been in seventh heaven as that second goal went in. Such a drama was positively Homeric. This game was certainly one of the most memorable and significant spectacles in football to be played out in modern times, possibly only equalled by Liverpool's similarly epic comeback in the Istanbul CL Cup Final some years later. It's because of games like this, that makes football what it is - the most compelling of sports, where one can go from complete despair to sheer jubilation and vice-versa in the space of 90 minutes.
Var would delay the atmosphere if that happened today... Barnes should have gone to the corner flag. Was 17 years old and an Arsenal fan and left the room at 90 mins mark only for my father RIP to tell me as i was coming down the stairs that we had won.... Up Arsenal 😄😄😄
This was the baddest game ever! ... to go to anfield and had to win by 2 goals to get the title against the team to beat back then. Mad! Must of been the bug of the summer of love 89. Immortal 😂 ❤❤❤
What a great day that was remember it well, going down the pub were my mates were celebrating a Liverpool title win, and telling them they lost. Well before Interweb and mobile phones, so news got around slowly then. One mate went to the phone box to phone his dad if it was true. I am an ABL (Anyone But Liverpool) fan.
