I remember mi grandad comin to babysit for me and sister...mum and dad off to Greasbrough...I remember they said they saw Roy Castle who later blamed his time in these types of clubs...full of smoke...for his lung cancer. I used to train in a bloke's garage in the early 80's...my uncle said he'd bin handy in his time...and dropped 3 or 4 blokes at this Club...it could get tasty when I was young in the late 70's...a lot of coal miners with testosterone to get rid of on a Friday night...those rimes were full or work, fags, beer...and turns and song. And the working men's clubs of those mining villages were real community hubs. Almsot all flattened now. My dad built the estate next to the club in the 60s...foreman plumber...Johnny Woodhead. I'll say this,,,the folk back then could party...but they could graft as well...they were born to it.
Notice how these normal people can actually talk and get their point across without resorting to 'like' every other word. They can also pronounce TH instead of saying 'I fink' or 'nuffink'. What a generation we've ended up with.
This is fantastic! Jack Rigby was my grandad - wonderful to see this. I'd heard so many stories of his show and the sand dance.... but never seen it! He has a mention in Ricky Tomlinson's autobiography.... (as Jack Crosby)..... but this is just so great to see. Thank you so much Glynn!
Just found out that Dave died earlier this year, what a sad loss to the guitar world and to his family. I used to see him when Strings had a residency at the Britannia in Castleford in the '80s, awesome. If anybody has any recordings I would love to hear from them. email trevorwoolley@hotmail.com RIP Dave
I just moved to Greasbrough, think some of these places still exist, a 2 minute walk from me - they look familiar. Will have to have a look and try to figure it out. Wonder if the staff @ the club have seen this?
Can anybody help? Trying to get a copy of the instrumental "Albatross" played by Dave Rawson & Dizzy Spells. The old Dizzy Spells tape screwed up because it was played so much, have a copy of all the other tracks, but Albatross is missing. Dave Rawson is indeed, the best guitarist ever. Tony Frost
I used to see him when he had a weekly residency in the Britannia in Castleford must have been in the 70s, most amazing guitar player I've ever seen (and I LOVE Telecaster players - Gatton, Lee, Buchanan, Clarence, ) why he was never in a top band or world famous I'll never know. Where is he? Does he still play? I would love to see him perform again.
He had a band called Strings (in the 70s - crap name) they were great, I used to have a tape by them with Somewhere Over The Rainbow, They did everything from Thin Lizzy to Head Hands and Feet. No matter how fast or how difficult any tune was he played it like he wasn't even trying, incredible. Where are you Dave??
I Drummed for Hindsight at that time we all knew each other.. Dizzy Spells ended up as Thunderbolt and Lightfoot without Dave and different Bass players and Drummers..I think Dave teaches not sure....
the greatest guitarist to ever live, Taught me 25 years ago and since then I've toured the world thanks to Dave. Missing our playing together hope to see you soon. Kieron
Yes a very talented guitarist is Dave. Only one I've heard that can play like Mark Knopfler when he plays Dire Straits and his ZZ Top Rough Boy is perfection, but this is a fraction of what he's capable of - Brilliant.
Es ist wieder diese B-Besetzung der Quo, von der ich nie was hielt. Quo ist Quo nur mit der "Piledriver" und "Live 1976"-Besetzung. Alles andere ist nicht wirklich Quo.
I was there, loved it, i was at the top as im in a wheelchair, taped it myself but its not as clear as this. Saw them first at Manchester in 1979, i was 16. Took hubby and 15yr old son with me. Great night, cant wait till the next. Thanks for sharing. Karen x
Do you have the full gig? Was at the Falkirk gig, Leon sounds brilliant! Sounds more like Jeff Rich. Would love to see Paper Plane from this gig if you have it mate. Thanks a lot for sharing!
