Welcome to Unlocking. This is a channel where I share about psychology, entrepreneurship, health, and a bunch of other things. I hope you have a nice time here.
Why is RU-vid suddenly suggesting I watch inane videos by self promoting life coaches? It’s not as if anyone has more experience of life than anyone else.
I call this the “one minus” method. The mathematical example is where you have a complex probability problem involving multiple interactions of probabilities which makes it very difficult to calculate. Instead of tackling the problem head on, and working through all of the combinations leading to the probable outcome, you focus on the probability of the even NOT occurring, which is usually much easier, and then take this value (which in probability terms will be some fraction) and subtract it from one, leaving you with your desired result. It’s a great favourite lesson of mathematics teachers and the are lots of examples out there. It’s surprising how often you can apply this principle this to everyday life situations as well if you are aware of it.
don't map out a path to your goals - instead - determine how to fail - then list the acts that will lead to that failure - and avoid them - the assumption is that after dodging the bad - you'll somehow arrive at your goal
This is the technique known in mathematics as "analysis" - notice the root word "ana" meaning "back". Assume what is to be proven is true (or envision having found what you are searching for) and then work backwards to see where you need to go. Opposite of "synthesis" which is putting together pieces to make a solution. So analysis works backwards, synthesis works forward. Check out the classic "How to solve it" by George Polya for a deep treatment of this and other problem solving techniques
You explained this like you didn't understand it, though. If you did, you relate it to disjunctive syllogism, material implication, reductio ad absurdum.
If something was true, it would just be true all the time, aversion is cause of failure, something is always true all the time, thats why entrapment introduces lies, Macy's day parade in place of my music history, hide the porno, from who? Some crazy weirdo, but above that venue, its an entrapment. True things are always true.
No offence but this was bad. First I will say that if this is the advice you follow to get rich (to avoid things that make you poor) then you will die poor. More importantly, you give no practical examples. You say "can you think of other situations" without prompting your viewer with more examples, which honestly feels extremely lazy on your part. Double the length of your video. And spend more time on concrete things and less on abstract. The mind will put the abstract together on its own. If it doesn't, you're destined to stay poor forever.
In general this a very good video, but the Charlie Munger example was a terrible one. In the US (and even more so in Europe) the place where you are most likely to die is at HOME. The second most likely place to die is in a hospital. Between HOME and a HOSPITAL, Americans are about 65% likely to die in these two places. Does Charlie never go home? If he has a reversible life threatening condition, does he not seek medical help? Unfortunately the Einstein example is bad as well, but I'll write about that separately.
@@InsightTrades The internal truth of a metaphor should itself be true, otherwise it's a bad metaphor. What Munger said was stupid, not wise - inverting would tell him he should stay away from home and stay from hospitals - not a good strategy. The strategy of inverting may make sense, but you should bother finding good Metaphors. Just because a really rich guy said something doesn't make it smart. The Einstein metaphor was bad too. The foundation of Einstein's work on Relativity was his mathematical and theoretical confirmation that implied the relative speed of light is constant - that's a staggering thing to assert. He did that through grappling with Maxwell's theoretical and mathematical descriptions of electromagnetism. Einstein clearly states this in his writings on Relativity. That's how Einstein came to believe that the speed of light was constant. The video seems to imply he just plucked that concept out of thin air because he was following the inversion strategy. Rather Einstein discovered that the speed of light was constant, and the rest of his work naturally followed from that. Einstein was not thinking about the inversion strategy when he figured out Relativity. Rather he discovered something no one else knew to be true -I.e. the relative speed of light is constant. Munger's statement was stupid (and it even argues against the inversion strategy), but it's clear he does use the inversion strategy. But Einstein, whose path to understanding Relativity is famous, clearly was not thinking about the inversion strategy. It makes sense using the inversion strategy could lead to interesting results, but both of these were terrible examples to use. If you are going to use something as a metaphor, the internal truth of the metaphor should support your assertion. These two do not.
@@jamesbarringer2737 that's a great analysis and breakdown! I think I got as much from that as I did from the inversion video. I took it a lot more lightly i.e. look from a different angle, about confirmation bias, but you broke it down quite a bit further. I would say Munger is a genius because he initiated your analysis😉 Nice work!
I had forgotten what real energy felt like, yeah, it’s been over 2 years and I don’t crave the stuff anymore, surprisingly I didn’t suffer withdrawal and that was key, not even within the first days after go’ogling Steffon Barkload’s Quit Drinking Forever and quitting because I wanted to with no pressure or anything.
AVOID TRUMP in 2024 ? Democrats might focus on how to AVOID TRUMP MANIA in this election... (Have IDEA CONTESTS, asking people to submit messaging ideas, now) ============================================================ TNX
There once was a man with a goal, How to get there he just didn't know, Inversion dingalings, By not doing things, That would move him away from it though.
117 billion ( by one estimate) human brains have existed. One brain ( Mark McCutcheon) in 2002 discovered/ published the CAUSE of gravity. Gravity is simple Galilean relative motion. The earth is approaching- expanding at 16 feet per second per second constant acceleration- the released object (apple). That is the most important “ inversion” ever. And no one - including you?- is interested. The human brain prefers a lie. Strange indeed. “The Final Theory: Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy “, Mark McCutcheon for proper physics including the CAUSE of gravity, electricity, magnetism, light and well.... everything.
Actually, the world is not that complex to the trained individual, to the untrained, yes, very complex, why? because your untrained. All animals require training.
What do your even mean by "the world"? Do your mean life? Relationships? Business? As far as being trained it all depends on who trains you as well. Just because a human Masters one thing that's complex and may make it simple does not mean they've mastered life or the world!
Alcohol is just poison, nothing more. The thing is that we have this collective insanity to believe it adds value to our lifes. The culture of alcohol is the perfect example of how human operate in a shared imagination, like a religion, if we all believe something is good, then there is no question, it is good, and it gets as far and ridiculous so we actually drink poison. I stopped drinking alcohol 2 years ago and I can tell you it's the best decision I've ever made, I feel so free and peacful to finally step outside of this bubble of madness.
And you can say what you want, until you can speak no more. I've been jerking it on the reg since I was 15. I'm 34 now, and have been drinking weekly since I was 27. I can tell you with 1000% certainty that one is worse than the other. Withdrawing from one will kill you. The other will not. One is socially accepted and is sold everywhere. The other is not and is free to do. Use your brain, and re-think about the things you write on here. Withdrawals from alcoholism can be fatal. Delirium tremens has a kill rate of %40. Nobody has died from nofapping.
It's simply a new era. Old times people seek company and escapism through alcohol, now we got both through phone/pc. No need to be drunk to use phone. Of course many drinks still, but it looks like with every new generation its less and less. I stopped like 15 years ago, after that many of my classmates went alcohol free life stile too. Celebrities just feel same.
Except that at least 2 of them drink. Chris Williamson drank a lot, stopped temporarily and now drinks occasionally. Joe Rogan drinks during his podcasts, smokes cigars, weed, does various drugs and eats junk food occasionally.
Sure this might be good advice for someone who is a daily drinker. For someone who drinks a few times per year, I really couldnt give a fuck about the downsides.
The video is well made and clear, yet you should have given credit to Shane Parrish, as the depiction you provide (down to the exact examples and explanation flow) is EXACTLY the same that Shane provides in his book The Great Mental Models vol. 1. Taking from others’ work is fine (this is all Shane does by the way, as per his own admission), but referencing the original source should go with it.
Thank you for your feedback. That's right I used Shane Parrish's book as the main source and also other contributions from other authors. But I probably should have looked for more and or other examples. My thought process went back to Derek Sivers blog post - sive.rs/dq I have added the source in the video description and will always give the "main source" in the future.
