Hi friends! My name is Kayla (or Lala) Welcome to my booktube channel where twice a week I talk to you about books! 🇨🇦 You can expect reading vlogs, reading challenges, readathons, book club picks, book recommendations, and more! I read a range of genres from mystery, thriller & horror to contemporary, fantasy & sci-fi!
What’s really insane is a couple days ago I remembered this show I used to watch called girls in love and went into a deep dive, watching clips of it on youtube. I never realised it was based on a book. And now I’m watching this. What the hell. So weird I love how connected we are hahaha
Have you read The Shipping News? Annie Proulx. The story is also cold (often literally) but intimate. I loved the prose, but I could see it being hit or miss for people.
I think for 1998 you should read Parable of the Talents. I just read it and I think it's even better than Parable of the Sower, but it also does some things that comment on Sower and add to the complexity of the narrative :D That's my only 5-star from 1998. I also rated My Soul to Keep 5 stars, I was super into it, read it in February and find it funny that the back blurb is from Octavia Butler herself :D
I just remember being so drunk (legally) going to see Spice World in the theater and having the best time! (I saw again later, sober, and still had a great time)
My 5-star for 1998 (my birth year!) is About a Boy by Nick Hornby. I've only read it once though so it may not hold up but it may appeal? It's got a cool film adaptation too.
It is definitely possible that the ceiling paint has changed color over time. However I noticed you have paint colors there and I would bet that your ceiling is actually painted in "ceiling flat" from the brand of whatever that original paint can is in. Also also if the color is the same but the finish is different flat/satin/eggshell the color is going to look wrong/different even if it's literally the same.
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson is the way for 1998! "In Steischoros, Herakles kills Geryon and steals his red cattle. In Carson, Herakles breaks Geryon’s heart and steals his innocence." Plus, Anne Carson is Canadian.
If you're still looking for a solution for your ceiling, I think if you can take a little chip of your ceiling and bring it to the paint store or where you get your paint and see if they can color match it off of the chip. I feel like that way it can be the closest to the current color. But it also might be easier to repaint the whole ceiling.
Luzia isn’t affront of the inquisition because of she has magic. It’s because she is Jewish and her magic comes her Jewishness. She fears they will find out her magic comes from her Jewishness, her incantations are Hebrew and ladino. It’s a the main plot of the book. But yeah go ahead and misconstrue it and erase the main plot of the book. 🙄
The Spanish Inquisition is pretty....well known for being a horrific persecution of Jewish folks, I can't imagine someone going into the book not knowing that? (Before or after hearing my 3 minute summation of my thoughts.)
I'm doing this challenge as well and I need a 5 star for 1998 too so I'm really looking forward to the next one. My 5 star for 1997 is Little Miss Strange by Joanna Rose, if anyone is looking for more books for that year. Oh, I was also completely obsessed with Wild America! I think my dad eventually made a copy of the VHS from the rental store so I'd stop asking about it. 😅
