Cycling with don, I have been a life long cyclist, custom frame builder and a master mechanic for the touring cyclist and AAfes sports store . I have A German TUV certification
I’m an old guy with 60 years riding bikes, motorcycles, and for the past 8 years, ebikes. One thing that never changes is the idiots eventually spoil it for the rest of us. If we adopt some basic rules and give the cops a way to identify culprits, the problem will go away. My suggestions: don’t allow kids under 14 to ride ebikes, make everyone pass a motorcycle or ebike class and display a visible numbered plate at age 16 or older, and get the police to enforce all existing traffic laws like maximum posted speed, stop lights and lane changing. I’d like to see everyone wearing helmets but Darwin’s Law will eventually take care of that problem.
I have seen a few bike accidents and more than my share of accidents with helmets on. a helmet is tested to 15mph anything more it will likely not protect your head. So ebikes need there own standard. Not to mention most people don't even wear there helmet right. I have been hit 2 times by cars nether time did my helmet save me. I still have that helmet.
4 years ago could not buy a new car not available sometimes i could find toilet paper .now have 2 new cars 1 being a hybrid maverick averaging 42 mpg yeah we are better off now. plus never forget the last guy sent people to stop a legal election sent over 100 police to the emergency room and a few deaths he caused . its all on film its the truth
I don't pull videos based on 1 comment if you need to change a shifter I have one on xp and one on the xpremium since they all the same shifter watch one of those.
this is just the beginning cause people misuse, abuse and destroy everything for others. then there is the war against travel and moving around freely and mixing and exchanging ideas which inhibits propaganda.
A couple of young ladies were riding those city scooters rode pass while I was waiting for people leaving the Reds game. As I entered the Newport Bridge, I saw them on the road in front of me. I guess they had had a little something to drink. One of them did a u-turn right in the middle lane, I guess that was smarter than even getting on there.
The government is preplanning as big changes are in the foreseeable future. Our capitalist country relies on taxes to keep infrastructure maintained and safe. Those taxes come from owning a licenses and tagged car and buying gasoline. As more young people opt for cheap eBikes and scooters, those tax revenues will diminish. These changes will require more citizens to keep up tax payments even if you don’t have a car. I’m not a fan, but I don’t see a way around it while still having usable roads. If you want to cut down on deaths, do what Britain did with motorcycles, and all boys will hate: restrict new users to the low speed class of bikes and allow them to graduate to faster classes after they gain skills and survive. I’ll bet most of the deaths involve speed and careless or reckless driving. Adopting class restrictions allows you to still have choices and won’t restrict an industry out of existence. (Prepare for the stupid youth angst.)
Almost all comments have been concerning classes and speed when the government is concerned about substandard ebikes to many people getting hurt on bikes that had zero engineering and Almost universally have the cheapest junk on them because there is no standards on ebikes and companies have taken advantage of this loop hole
Ahh America. Where you can buy assault rifles at gun shows no problem but can't ride an ebike if it goes 20 mph. How many people have been killed by ebikes? I'd say just off the top of my head ZERO!.
It has been 2 years since you did this video . How is the bike holding out now . I am looking into the Verve+ 2 Lowstep Gen 3 next year up here in Canada
@@DonaldMays Specifically: The top speed of PA mode should be comparable to a road bike. ie: In Britain with a speed restriction of 15.5mph the ebike is first out of the gate at the stop light BUT, this creates a huge safety hazard as every single vehicle and regular bicycle has to bypass the painfully slow ebike.
@@keithmoriyama5421 i doubt that will happen here. I would expect it will remain the same 20mph. The question is, what class 3 bikes will be limited too. the big change will be bike computers will be locked from tampering. Customs will reject the shipment of anything not meeting standards. Good bye Graymarket bikes.
A shim is not a standard manufacturing practice and in all the bikes I have owned lectric is the first to use a shim I would if I could find a good seat post in 34.9mm eliminate it
thanks for the review! not a lot of content on this particular bike, super helpful. looking to buy a used one of these, what's best way to learn about it's battery health? curious if the odo is best way to see if battery in good helath, or better off using a multi-meter. appreciate the input!
The battery is really hard to check as it take a 5v source to turn the battery on that's why no one makes a aftermarket battery. Odometer is a good way to estimate life left. I have 4000 miles on my Trek. I have seen no loss of range I charge after each ride get 18 miles on the first 2 bars, and the total is about 35 miles on touring that's a 400watt battery if you can find a 500watt battery would be great. Batteries are very expensive
Just more ways to get their hands in our pockets….its always about the money…a new reason to get pulled over and maybe sh_t by police…. People be careful they are always coming for us….
I just started considering getting an ebike as an alternative to commute to work without needing to register or get a license plate on it. I am shocked to have only seen 219 comments but most asking for regulations?! New York City is more than happy to find a way to force registration fees and insurance on folks over there which doesn’t surprise me. All regulations will do is give government more ways to tax us. Thanks for these updates.
I see the industry being like the European market .customs will be rejecting ebikes that don't meet laws. I lived in Europe for 10 years you can't buy Chinese bikes like you can here. Chinese bikes are marketed to USA and communist block countries
Don, I am on board with better safety regulation of Ebikes. However, if we are suddenly required to register and place insurance our 'bikes' how exactly does that relate to these upcoming regulations in the name of 'safety'?
The DOT has already stated they are not interested in regulating ebikes and the manufactures from China have real problems getting things to pass DOT standards. Bikes already manufactured are safe for now to a point if your bike doesn't meet one of the ebike classes there is no path to make it street legal in some cases you need a manufacturer certificate of compliance
Happens across all genres people abuse safety so laws are implemented. I have several electric bikes and find most if not ALL in my area ride their ebike like a motorcycle in a bike lane. Glad to see the regulations and we should go Europe’s way
The rule making will like focus on bikes that don't make the standard of current classes. It is likely that future chinese imports will be inspected for compliance to us standards and that don't will be returned just like europe
His girth is why my wife won't let me get an ebike! Maybe when I'm 80. Could it be that some of the equipment failures are due to overweight riders? Many mountain bike products and suspension top out at a 250 lb max rider. Now add batteries.. 😮
Most US manufactures limit bikes to 250lbs and that's including bikes. but most Chinese and other countries try to hit 330 lbs. so your wife tells you what you can ride? You can lose weight on an ebike and I would say you can lose more on a ebike. Now if you are trying to gain fitness a non-electric bike is a better choice. the key is intensity weight loss requires you to be in the fat-burning zone of less than 110 beats per minute a smartwatch is the best way to keep track. as to batteries weight 7lbs most people but 20lbs of crap on there bikes there handle bars are look like a garage sell,
Just stumbled across your channel, found this video interesting & informative, thank you! I don’t know Karen but I smiled and cheered for her- I just got an e-bike, but I’m a “do hobbies in the comfort of home” kinda gal myself most of the time!😂 Stay safe!🤗
It’s sad that our government insists on e everything but when you buy them all of a sudden it’s a no good thing! We have class 2 e bikes and we are older and they allow us the ability to get out and enjoy what we couldn’t do without them. Seems like it’s the die hard people who believe that only the young and fit should enjoy our trails
This about the future you won't be able to purchase a fast bike they will not allow bikes that are not software locked and as to enforcement lean the bike on kickstand and twist throttle if stays under 20mph no ticket California is in the process of making a crime to modify a ebike
Part of this is Manufacturing. Europe has many more cyclists then the US has and the market is 50% larger than the US in all forms of cycling… the manufacturers will make bikes for Europe not the US and the US will follow those regulations by default because it’s cheaper to make bikes that way.
Bicycle industry in America is pretty much dead it consists of a few companies that only produce very high end bikes and everything else is produced in China or Taiwan
Thank you lots for taking the time to make this type of helpful video. May God continue to Bless you, Karen and everyone watching from South Texas subscriber. Let us support this channel by giving a thumbs up and subscribing.
I don't I had one on my bike. If your going to buy one buy one with an air spring and they are not cheap if you dont weigh over 150 lbs you might be able to use a cheaper one. They don't seem to hold up if you are heavy
Hi Don. My little Brother lost a toe wearing flip flops. Concrete curb V steel peddle, toe looses always. Fox Bat helmet saved my head when I crashed a while back. Gloves saved my hands. I have pictures to remind me. I know an electric motor don't break in but now I have 200 miles on my Tamobyke v20 it's right at 30 mph.
Great update Donald. I won't ride by bike even around the block without my helmet and gloves. Hard to believe that I used to ride a high powered motorcycle at over one hundred miles an hour without a helmet. Crazy.
It honestly had to happen people are to irresponsible. also i can pedal my bike 27 mph on flat ground, weve built bike handling skills. people who dont ride alot or havent in a long time could really hurt them selves on an ebike that goes 20mph, you need skills for that . I just need an emtb before the switch to 15mph lol.
