Dave's a monster guitar player and has always been high on my list for sure. He's only gotten better and better over the years, check out some of the 80's Kinks concerts... he shreds! He's also a great singer too! Just listen to "Wicked Annabella" off The Village Green Preservation Society 🤘.
The kinks have 700 songs in their catalog with 20 new ones coming…- it’s been very difficult being a dedicated kinks fan since 1964 the average music fan is not aware of their music - they have 100’s of cuts on albums that are better than their hit records!
IDK who owns this post and how associated they are with MR's personal history. But if it hasn't been mentioned yet the bio entitled "The Mick Ronson Story: Turn and Face the Strange by Garry Burnett and Rupert Creed" (which I have no connection with) is a useful resource for those newly interested in Ronno and how he shaped (often without or with less credit than he deserved) modern classic rock. I am 61 and in 1978? went to see Ian Hunter and MR play in the coliseum in Portland, ME. It was great. And I got to see the lead Spider (some say Ronno was actually Ziggy....cause Z played guitar!). No matter. It was fun and meaningful and resources such as the above book demonstrate how influencial MR was on music via his music and production and even such silly things as being willing to wear sparkly makeup. He was a presence but unfortunately never a Rock God because his roots and own nature made him into too nice of a guy. And nice guys may not always finish last ... But they rarely finish first.
So way back in the day the DJ played the record and then said, "That was Come Dancing by The Kinks and I wonder if you can do that." I laughed so hard I almost crashed the car.
Man it is BS what Steely Dan did to Palmer. Truly unfortunate, but looks like he got around ok afterwards. Shame same can't be said for Jim Hodder though.
Saw Turn and Face the strange in Hull new theatre which was amazing. You dont know how much music he worked on. The Piano on Perfect Day. Just read Suzi Ronsons Me and Mr Jones a worthwhile read
Fantastic music history lesson. My faves are "I know there's something going on" and I had no idea that was Frieda from Abba!. Also "Since you been gone," "Winning" and that yacht rocky hit "You can do magic." Such a variety of songs that take me back. Thank you!!
Brought a greater appreciation for Russ Ballard I only knew of him from the band Argent. I'm going to pull out my Argent albums and give them a listen. Great video, thanks.
I've been a long time fan of MAGNUM, and on their 1990 album "Goodnight LA" Tony Clarkin, the songwriter for the band teamed up with Ballard to write "Rocking Chair". Totally bostin song. Check out the album! R.I.P. Tony Clarkin. You gave the world so much good music.
I love it! We in the U.S. are woefully unaware of people like Russ Ballard, Cliff Richard, or even Lonnie Donegan, who worked a lot in the U.S. I’m fascinated by the way American music made its way over to England and then came back again during the “invasion,” in turn influencing our rock scene immeasurably. Thanks for the comment!
He was brilliant back in Brainbox. I first heard "Downman" on Radio Veronica in early 1969, and was totally blown away! 🤩I bought it, and I've still got it, and it's still one of my all time favourites!
I remember listening to Focus in the '70s and being incredibly impressed with Jan's playing. He is one of the best guitarists to ever exist. He was awesome when he was young and has only gotten better over time.
The Kinks should have had a REAL Lead Guitar Player and Dave Davies should have worked in a factory but Ray let him tag along - He was one of the very worst guitar players ever recorded.
Killer glimpse into the life of Mr. Ronson. What a heavy he was. I learned a few things here. I always though his playing and tones on Ziggy Star dust cemented into the top electric guitarists ever to live. So damn good. I think Randy Rhoads took a lot from his Ziggy tones. No coincidence Randy played that creme white Les Paul. I saw Bowie in an interview kind of bash Mick as he thought Mick would have been a huge star but didn't know what happened to him. Hell, he was at the forfront of so much great music up to his death, I would say he did fantastic.
