I am not convinced that anyone will ever be able to outperform Harry Lennix in this role. His portrayal of Aaron is absolutely perfect -- clever, devious, manipulative, sadistic, sardonic, and smug but also disarming when he needs to be.
I came from watching downtown abbey and I was very sad that it was over mostly because of the grandmother and when I found this show I said there better be sassy lady in this show and guess what!?! There is and this is the most sassy woman alive and I LOVE IT❤
I would love sometime for them to do a flashback or two to the years when Agnes and Ada were younger and Agnes' husband was alive. From the times he's been mentioned in their conversations, he must have been a hideous man who may have been not only abusive towards Agnes but also Ada (and possibly Oscar). This could be the reason why Agnes is such a cold person....and part of me thinks that her husband might not have had died by natural causes, possibly an 'accident'
You know, we have a tendency to judge the people in this story pretty harshly, and I’m not entirely sure that’s fair. First of all, the film seems to only cursorily resemble the events of real life, which is fine cuz film is never a direct reflection of reality, but rather a society’s values. Now, we have to think here about the context I think of the accusations. Marguerite was accusing Le Gris that her husband paid rent to, who was a wealthier and better connected to nobleman, knowing that her husband, whose military career had just taken a serious hit with a situation he could’ve fucking died in, would pursue revenge. Besides that, he had been having problems with this Le Gris fellow for some years. Now, we might say that all the men in this story are pigs or whatever, and maybe that’s true, but from the perspective of people on the ground in the setting, that wouldn’t actually be that important. From Carrouges’s mother’s perspective, that’s her son and her legacy that almost died and now is almost about to die again. From the perspective of people on his estate, well… this is kind of a time period where revolts in the nobility are staged on such grounds. That means everyone on the estate’s life is potentially being risked say, if Carrouges were not allowed a duel for his honor. You know, cuz he might get some men together and say, “Hey, Le Gris and that fuckhead boss of his need to die. They fucked me out of an estate as part of my marriage contract and then they raised my rent AND Le Gris likes to wander around and rape people’s wives and the king gives nobody any justice here.” Remember that his father-in-law had actually been on the side of the English and that his marriage of his daughter to a lower noble and the bargaining of some of his estates was what he had to do to reintegrate into that system. Marguerite opening her mouth about this to a lot of people could very well be perceived as unthinkably selfish, and with good reason. I’m not saying that’s right, but if you’re one of the tenants on the estate and it’s your son who is gonna get called up for battle if Carrouges doesn’t get his due in court, you may be just a little bit angry.
2:32 what i like about this is this slight detail shows how pragmatic agnes is She seems to DISPROVE of inbreeding (mentioning how Marion & Oscar are 1st cousin's) and then mentioning how Marion is broke af Rich families back then often DID(though not all the time obviously)marry cousins, but only whenever money was involved ⬆️ 2:34 this however shows how didactic she is, if your gonna mary relations, marry RICH relations(in her mind it seems)
Agnes is an insufferable snob, but she was right, some of the time. "Oh Henry Henry, must you live on through your child can't let her go for pities sake"
I absolutely love this series. The Golden Age is what my great-grandparents were living in at the time, and their fortune grew a whole lot larger. They were Russian immigrants who came with health. They were in the South of France when the Russian Revolution broke out. In those days, no one who had money could travel lightly; they had many suitcases, jewelry pieces, and many bank accounts in Germany, Austria, France and Italy. At some point, my great-grandmother grew very scared, so they took a boat to Boston, where they lived and died years later. This is why I still live in the Northern New York State, it is not their house but the house my parents built, with many treasures from their Russian past.
Christine Baranski is pure brilliance and a sweetheart and suprisingly plays an awesome ascorbic bitch so well..........love this show.........move over downton you're old school
6:57 Agnes's line "Youve been reading those German books again " reminded me of Dowager Countess Violet telling Isobel Crawley "Youve been reading those Communist newspapers again ! " when the latter says that the former couldnt give tuppence about Ethel , a maid!! So similar in their snobbish-ness!!
I have read and reviewed a few books about the Gilded Age. It’s been a very good time period to learn and review about. This series is VERY good as well. I am looking forward to season 3.
This is a lot better. I dont know how Disney did so poorly, but the way you present it really does make it sound more sinister and well written. Bravo.
In Latin Spanish dub, they fixed the infamous line, in LS they say something like "With me you live free and i dont even charge you rent" which is such an easy fix, i dont know how they couldnt have though that
I think the reason for that line was perhaps intentional: it's Magnifico drawing attention to his feigned generosity twice -- "Oh look at me and what a good guy I am" -- like he does for half the song. However, from the standpoint of someone listening to the song so much of it sounds redundant. This could have been the writer's intention or it could just be a case of writing a song too quickly.
