No Premier League players but the 1970 EC1 winners Feyenoord back two, Rinus Israel and Theo Laseroms were hard nuts. Back in the day they gave the centre forward of Go Ahead Deventer a good "looking after". He ended up in hospital with a couple of teeth nocked out. Israel and Laseroms, being the gentlemen sporters, visited him bringing him a bag of peanuts.😂 Israel in 1974 played in on of the, arguably, hardest World Cup games ever against Brasil.
Hard or dirty? Players like Jaap Stam were hard, but not in a dirty way. A player like Vinny Jones was pure dirt. Just out there to hurt opponents but not a single bit of ability.
Italy's win in 1982 was the greatest. After 3 draws in the group and a scandal back home, they go and beat reigning champions Argentina (who went and won the one after in '86), beat Brazil who had arguably the best team to not win a World Cup, beat Poland then Germany in the final. I can't think of any other team that beat Argentina, Brazil and Germany on route to winning a World Cup.
I never understood how the "long count" was controversial, Tunney showed his superior intelligence and knowledge of the rules by staying down to recover, you clearly see him looking at the referee and listening to the count. Nothing controversial about it, just stupidity by Dempsey.
My list would be as follows. 1. Muhammed Ali 2. Joe Louis 3. Lennox Lewis 4. Sonny Liston 5. Larry Holmes 6. George Foreman 7. Vitali Klichko 8. Joe Frazier 9. Jack Dempsey 10. Jack Johnson
Marciano wasn't a slow starter. He just overtrained sometimes, which could make him slow and stiff in the opening rounds, but he was normally much faster. He ko'd more than half his opponents in the first 3 rounds, and just over a quarter of his ko's happened in the first round. He was usually ahead on points even before getting the knock out. Liston usually needed the opening rounds to get a sense of how to time his opponent before going in for the ko in the mid-rounds. But Marciano would be too awkward to time easily, and so active with his relentless offense and his highly underrated defense that he wouldn't give Liston any time to think or even to breathe. Marciano would likely give Liston the hardest opening rounds of his life. Then Liston would pay him back and even it out in the middle rounds. But Rocky would only become more motivated and more focused after that, and would ultimately overcome him. There probably would be a rematch, but Marciano would probably do even better.

@@bobbybrisket1708 I’m not disputing that he’s a hell of a coach and they’ve done great things. Just saying it might have helped. What do I know though.
You gotta be kidding me , the quality of opponents Louis had compared to ALI WHAT A JOKE😂😂😂 billy conn wouldn't of lasted 4 rounds with Ali or larry holmes for that matter
He should just put a few more cigars in his mouth and hands so you can't make me any more lists ... (Are you kidding me???) Some things are plane and not peanut - where does one go with this list ???
