Welcome to Unpacking the Trunk Costumes!
My name is Kelley, and this channel is here to encourage and support, share and teach (and learn!) about costume creation, via research, history and the "figuring out" of making the garments.
I plan to not only share the planning and making of historical garments, but also share stories of the people who wore them.
I also love antiquing, so plan to share some of my finds now and then.
I have been sewing since I was a child and created costumes in school and college. I am currently creating costumes for myself and my husband for various events we attend. I also create garments in order to learn about their history, how and why they were created and how they were worn. I find it is also a great way to learn about our ancestors and our past.
Sorry, but I do not take commissions.

I’m a sales rep for Martelli so forgive me for making a couple of corrections😊The proper way to hold the cutter is with your index finger on the top and your thumb on the side where the little indentation is. You never want to hold it the first way you demonstrated because you have no control over the direction. Also, you want to make sure you’re not pushing down with your finger, the pressure should be coming from your palm, which it looked like you were doing correctly. Thanks for a positive review!

I truly enjoyed learning about the Matanuska Valley Colony project. I had never heard about it and having lived in Fairbanks truly appreciate what those amazing pioneers endured. The pictures were absolutely wonderful! Your fabric and patterns selections were wonderful. I felt your pain of the apron being cut out incorrectly. I've done that myself on a few projects. Your kitchen segment was an absolute delight! I think this may be my favorite video of yours yet! :)

What a fasinating story! There is so much history we have forgotten. The dress was lovely, and as for the apron, I remember my grandmother wearing one just like it. Thank you for being her to mind again.

You are too cute! I cannot get over that you found the perfect quilted jacket at the thrift shop. The yoke detail on the skirt is just brilliant. I have some of those same Christmas ornaments. We are kindred spirits indeed!

I love these! The lace and fabric are so pretty. Plus the jacket idea is brilliant! I have a dress I think could be adjusted for a Gunne Sax style dress, but I've been distracted lol. Seeing everyone's projects makes me want to pick it up!

Kelley this video truly delighted my heart! In the dark cobwebs of my mind, I remember this show. That PollyAnna was all grown up! :) I am putting it on my Amazon queue to watch again. The Wearing History blouse has been on my list for a while now so I appreciate your tip to watch the video first. You truly look lovely in your new ensemble!

Kelley, I love your cozy project SEW much! It was fascinating to see how you extended the collar. Dare I say I love your robe fabric even better than the inspiration? The eyelet detail on the yoke and lace trim truly added so much to the nightgown. I often sew in the afternoons and have Little House on in the background too. I watch it on the Cozi tv channel. You must tell me about your winter scene. I was once stationed with my husband in Alaska so it caught my eye. Thank you so very much for the kind mention.

Looks so comfy! The robe on the show had a sheen to the fabric. I was imagining a silk. Can't you hear the rustle of the silk? :)

🎉Brava! You look quite fetching in your🐏costume. 💖 Love your cheerful fabric choices -- and clever way of devising the parts & pieces, esp. inspo for the petite apron🚽. Also liked how you took us through your process. Great 📸lookbook montage @ the close too! The 🐑Shepherdess has always been so popular for the younger debutantes of the "Marriage Mart." 👀For decades, I've been reading about it in costume balls described in historical 💕romance💕 books📚. Very exciting to see a later version of it in Weldon's Fancy Dress come to life. ✉ ps Zippers scare👻me too. Don't sew much, but enjoy dabbling.🌟My beloved mom was a brilliant seamstress, but I do not aspire any where near her level of expertise. One day, just figuring out all the machines I inherited would be exciting enough! Plus, finding creative ways to use up her sewing stash. 🤔Zippers always seemed awfully complex to master. Thought if I ever dare to make clothes from scratch that I will simply choose a pattern without one. Voila! Problem solved! 😉 ☮Peace 💛Love 🌼Beauty from Los Angeles.
