I had this car in 1979 brand new, in yellow. You get the R's up over 2500, the second 2 barrels on the carb open up, and you basically leave our space/time continuum. I wish I had kept that car!!! I sold it because I kept getting speeding tickets. Ha!
hello. can you tell me the sizes of the wheel and tire setup you have. are the rims 15x7 or 15x8? tires size and do they rub, had to roll fenders etc. thanks.
Yo Jo, I didn’t know you got your hands on an actual Ze ECU. This dyno did not turn out how I thought it would. For a second I thought you were able to unleash the full 170
It was certainly different, but by that time it had been around for several years in the Rx-2, 3, &5. It had a reputation for being a fun and peppy engine, with the main issue being oil consumption. When my mom was in the market for a new sports car, he started reading about the upcoming RX7, and everything he read about it was positive. They loved the look of it and it just made sense, so they ordered hers and fell in love with it. The rest is history, lol.
Great stuff! Also I appreciate the notes about the power steering, I’ve been considering removing mine for some time (03 P5). Definitely something to debate on
I still have my 1980 Rx7, I bought it 2 months after my 1973 240z Datsun was totaled out. I bought thr Rx7 because it styling reminded me of my 240z. Now, I am in search of a 240z, but keeping my original Mazda...!
My first Rx-7 was a spitting image of that car. Corvette yellow with a tan/brown interior. Drove that thing daily for a couple years after I graduated. I built a replica model of it last year. Lots of memories with that car. I owned 2 more several years later, an 82 and an 83. The 83 had a JDM motor in it and was pretty quick. Fun cars but a pain to maintain all the time.
Hey man, nice P5. Bit confused as to why you think the powerband was better, however, given that it lost torque everywhere? Barely enough to feel since it's barely 2% difference, but obviously measurable. Was the ECU swap done on the same dyno day?
It was done at the same place within a few weeks of each other. Since the harness had to be swapped and re-pinned in a few places. The MP3 ecu peaked at 3k and dropped to 88hp and Tq at redline. The ZE ecu peaked at 5500 and barely dropped to 120 at redline. The gains made a difference on track, since i spend most of the time at the higher RPMs. Making peak power at 3k rpm’s and dropping to 88hp at redline is tragic.
@@Southrnfresh Sorry man, but you're reading the graph completely wrong. I get how you thought it was like that since it's a comparison of two runs, but each colour represents each separate dyno run. So in red you have the MP3 ECU, with 132hp and 137tq, and in green you have the FSZE ECU, with 130hp and 135tq. The line that climbs up diagonally is the horsepower figure for both, the line that jumps up at the start and then tapers down is torque. With the MP3 ECU, it makes peak torque around 4100RPM, peak power ~5200RPM, and 125hp at redline. With the FSZE ECU, the peaks are pretty much the same, the only difference is the redline is higher (you can see how the green line goes to 6500RPM instead of 6000RPM, though IIRC the FSZE redline is 7000RPM), but it still only makes 120hp from like 6500-6700RPM. Honestly you'll probably not feel it being any slower, again, difference is only like 1.5-6% at peak, but it certainly hasn't made any extra power either.
@@Southrnfresh Yeah, follow the colours, not the different lines lol. It looks like the factory improved ignition tuning from the MP3 ECU is actually better than the JDM one, although it could be better with the matching FSZE intake manifold (then again, that manifold could work even better with the MP3 ECU also).
To think. That was just about 20 years ago......with just intake/exhaust (barely 120hp at the wheels), Koni Yellows and ["soft"] RacingBeat springs.....and learning how to manipulate rotation/momentum/weight transfer vs. having a ton of power under my right foot. It only made things easier when adding power (JRSC) and better suspension. Was so much fun back in the day, before it became about having big power and going all crazy with modified steering angle (aka having deep pockets).
