@@zkdisco just came back from a week in SF. Stayed just between Tenderloin and Union Square. I was pleasantly surprised to not see as many homeless as the videos on YT depict. Sure, there were more than what I'm used to, but it was not really a "problem".

About the fresh water, there is no problem in the availability of fresh water in Kerala. I am not sure about rest of India. I am from Kerala and studying in Germany and I have to say that fresh water availability in Kerala is much better than in Germany. Mainly because Germans use tap water to drink and most of the buildings here are very old and not renovated properly, especially the plumbing. In Kerala, we have 6 moths of monsoon and we have plenty of groundwater available. But waste management is exactly opposite. It's a huge problem in India and mainly due to people are not educated about proper waste management and also the corrupt politicians who don't give any importance to the basic needs.
Tenderloin was worse in the 70's. At night the streets were full of prostitutes and drag queens. The "after 11pm" crowd. You remember the scene from 'Blast from the past' movie where the father rides up the elevator for the first time in 30 years and goes out for a bit. Tenderloin was like that.
