I pack as much RAM into the computer as I can afford because it makes my computer faster. Because I cannot upgrade an Apple computer my Mac has 64 gb. So what. It has to work 10 years and to survive a lot of OSes
Thanks so much for explaining this. I’m a graphics professional who has used Macs for 30 years and I still don’t understand a lot of the inner workings! Everyone else is throwing around numbers and benchmarks without slowing down to really explain what those mean. I need a new Mac system as my Intel iMac just died, so this is really helpful to me. Can you also do a video explaining how much SSD we should get? Especially considering we can buy external SSDs. Can’t wait to see what else you come up with. A review of monitors would be good. Is that a BENQ I see at your station?😊
Thank you, thank you for such a clear explanation. I like that you speak slowly and clearly. Your video is so sharp and crisp with lovely lighting! Subscribed. Unfortunately, my Intel iMac just bit the dust and I never knew about the Activity Monitor. I used to always buy top of the line iMac and maxed out the RAM. I work with Lightroom and Photoshop and frequently use files 1-2 TB. My 2017 iMac was starting to struggle a bit with large Photoshop files. Especially if I used the Pattern Preview filter in Photoshop. I also do videos for online classes. I’m looking at the M2 Max Studio Mac with 12 core CPU, 38 core GPU, 16 core Neural Engine. Should I get the 32 GB RAM or upgrade to the 64GB?
I just updated my Mac, i went with 16GB ram after my last 2013 Mac was 8GB ram. My new M3 Mac is so much faster than my old 2013. After watching this video im glad i went with 16GB ram. Thanks.
Wow that’s the best explanation of what Apple’s unified memory is! Thank you for the awesome video! It really helped make my decision about getting more RAM for future proofing!
I mean, this is always a hot topic isn’t it? I do have a m2 pro mbp with 32 ram and 1tb for my engineering stuff but I just bought few hours ago a mba with 8ram and 512 gb for my gf since she just started the business at the uni… does she need 16ram? Absolutely not… for what? Excel, word and RU-vid? I think most of apple users (>60% maybe) do not need more than 8gb, let some memory swap the twice a year you do something heavier and few excel sheets and answering some emails… now if you are a heavy user.. coder/graphic designer/ engineer sure go get 32 as I did you will not regret it but I think people are getting a bit crazy about what people should have… I did my bachelors with a 3 kg 30 min long-lasting 8 ram and hdd and you know? I loved that pc (actually I still have it 😅) so… today university students and light users with a M chip 8 ram and 512 will do just fine + those laptops last long… So I disagree with the conclusions… but it is a matters of money, I you have it and want a better mb get it you will be happy with it. And anyway new arm windows laptops are gonna shake a bit the market, I think 🤔
My conclusions on why it benefits everyone is because of future proofing as I suspected everyday things will benefit from more RAM in the future. And now with the announcement of Apple Intelligence it seems my advice may be accurate as these new features are rumored to benefit from more RAM available.
@@TechDeclassified sure! I mean your opinion is not incorrect. What cause me sometimes some rejection is the constant need of having the best of everything… you know? Like if you want to future proof it and you have money it is for sure an amazing thing to do. So my opinion is that 60% of the people are future proofed since they do just basic stuff and actual laptops are amazing on this. And the people who need more like you and me we know it and we get it 😅 Anyway good video! 👏🏻
I’m from Brazil and I was looking for this type of content to decide which model I should buy. The way you explained everything on this video was so clear and accurate that I could understand perfectly (even though I’m not a native in English). Congrats, bro! I’ve just subscribed in your channel.
I learn so much about Apple in one video from this channel than 10 videos from other so called famous RU-vidrs with couple of M subscribers who pretty much talk a lot of sheet and excitement but no actual substance
This RU-vid channel needs to get more hype! Right now we are giving way too much attention to RU-vidrs (with couple of M subscribers) with fancy video editing but shallow or next to nothing substance. This guy has real substance, real education and great videos!
Gr8!!!! How easy to understand! Thanks a lot 😊 What about when I buy a Mac Studio M2 Max for my 100k images Lightroom library? And do photo editing with 130mb raw files. What about ssd speed vs ram in this case?
Nice video! I hope you make more. Easy Base-Pro-Max-Ultra decode: Pro is Base +2. Max (big) is Base + 50%, and theres a (little) that is -2. Ultra is literally Max x2 - so there are (big) and (little) versions like Max.
I don't know if you speak only on apple products or not but i would love to hear your thoughts on microsoft's co pilot plus, me personally major red flag. Anyways great video and very easy to understand
I have a m1 with 16gb and its to much for what I do with the computer. My next one will have 8gb again. My GF has one with 8gb (and 256 in storage) and she is absolutely fine with it.
What do you do with it, anything intense like music or video creation? I have a 32gb model I'm my Amazon basket right now. Something is telling me 32gb with the M3 max is going to be too much. I highly doubt i will be stepping into the 3d video rendering etc which I keep seeing you need 32gb for. Very confusing
@@darkcharmrecords I only do office tasks. But i used to edit photos (24 megapixels) on it where it did great. I cannot speak to video or music production. You may want to wait anyways since they are very likely to introduce the m4 macs in a few days at WWDC. Hope that helps.
Exactly. I just bought an M2 air and upgraded to 16GB. I don’t use heavy duty programs, but OS upgrades are going to get heavier and programs and documents will get larger. Imagine a computer today with 4GB of ram bought five years ago. 4 is not enough now, so I don’t believe 8 will be enough 5 years from now. This only applies to Apple of course, with PC you can always upgrade later.
Not always, lots of high end laptops are now being sold with soldered in ram that you cannot upgrade. These companies are starting to take liberties with us by doing that.
I like the way you explain, but, sorry buddy, you’re actually not demonstrating anything about how the RAM can be filled up. If Apple identifies the regular user as a simple app consumer, probably 8Gb RAM is enough. I would have appreciated if you could have given some real life comparisons.
Apple has been telling their customers since the 90s that they have enough ram. They make cheap, sell a-lot higher for just a little more memory and drive. It's called Capitalism.
I don't want to go overboard in defending Apple, but it seems to me that trying to "future proof" your Mac is not really the Apple way. Making the machines non-upgradeable lets them be more efficient and reliable. The "upgrade" is to another (not necessarily new) machine. Used Macs hold their value really well, and the migration tool lets you move your data and settings easily. So, changing machines isn't as painful, and trying to hold onto one for five or eight or ten years may not be the best strategy.
I can confirm. I came from a mid 2014 MacBook Pro 15" with 16GB RAM. I moved to an M1 MacBook with 8GB and it's shit! I regularly get the, "You're out of memory" warning. I get lockups and crashes a lot! I'm not an overly heavy user. Excel and Word Docs combined with some basic browsers like Chrome and it's choking. I have to pull out my 10 year old one to work on Excel files.
Bro you're doing too good of a job in describing everything, I am a cfa student, also a windows user and was pretty confused on what should my next laptop be. Your explanations made me realise that all I want is an M2 air with 16GB of RAM & 512GB of storage Thankyou for making my decision making easier.
You explained what happens when you run out of RAM (swapping) but you didn’t dive into the performance hit. For this video to be truly good, and to dispute the claims of Apple, you should show us what the performance hit is on modern Macs when you run out of RAM. Give your viewers tangible information what the side effects are of buying a Mac with a low amount of RAM and what they will expect to see when they run out of it.
M3 is good. The issues with M3 are more complex than just “it’s not good” A lot of it has to do with efficiency cores and how they are utilized. In Logic Pro 11 for example, Apple is better utilizing those cores.
Base macbooks are always cheaper keep that in mind. Like 512/24 gb M3 Macbook pro and 512/18gb(Base) M3 pro Macbook pro has same price. But M3 pro is so much powerful in every way than Macbook pro. Apple should fix it. Getting more ram/storage is very expensive.
Nothing has changed from decades ago when it comes to ram. When you get a new computer, you should always buy absolutely as much ram as you possibly can at the time. “Unified memory“ is no excuse to get around this. It’s universally true. It was in the 90s, and it is today, and it will be in 30 years. Buy as much ram as you possibly can when you get a computer. Period. Hard stop.
I would really like to know all those who here in the comments say that 8GB is not enough, what work they do in life. Either you are all engineers at Tesla or NASA or there is no explanation. I use an Air 8GB for programming and making music and have never had a slowdown. Are you sure that your anxiety is not just the result of Apple's marketing (which paradoxically you contest but seems to have achieved your objective perfectly?)
My advice: never future proof. I bought iPad 2017 the biggest capacity 512 at that time. And it died on me in 2 years. Hey, still got that 2010 mbpro working fine so. Use what you want NOW, forget future. Buy again when you need them/ got the money. You'll get powercreeped anyway
Subscription totally earned! Very high class quality and content. Well done and I wish you all the best in growing fast!!! Also super helpful guideline in terms of “what to buy” basically it’s as usual then higher you get in spec than better it gets and than lighter your wallet gets 🤪🤪🤪
