I remember my Dad telling me about this while was growing up, he had the RTV guide as it was known then for years after, which gave a detailed breakdown of the events and those who played a part in that fateful week April 1916. The greatest pity was we lost the guide after moving house such a pity thank you for this really enjoyed it
Those were days of reality not what we are seeing to day people stiling people's money 's and claims that they' re leaders but a the criminals they just sung the revolutionary song and wear the colour's of the revolutionary movement.
The Struggle was just but a sacrifice by young Zimbabweans. Songs were food of the tormented spirit. Hunger in the refugee camps where young people died of hunger, malnutrition, disease, jigger-fleas, .... Songs gave hope. In the battlefields both in the frontline inside Zimbabwe - Rhodesia then and in the rear both in Mozambique, Zambia and other countries was a big sacrifice of one's life. To go through all these and other challenges was not only a sacrifice but signifies commitment, dedication, resilience, .... towards emancipation for all - a Free Zimbabwe. I salute their efforts
I never saw this TV dramatisation of the 1916 rising. Joe Lynch played Cathal Brugha and I heard that this series was good back during the 50th commendation of the rebellion in 1966. I studied the independence struggle 1916-1923 for my Junior Cert and ended getting a B in my exam. Good times
I remember watching this when it was first broadcast in 1966. Each night RTE broadcast a new episode. I was only 7 at the time and most of my classmates had watched the series too.
The voiceover is by Ernst Hemingway, not Orson Welles (as credited: 0:20). It is true that the initial intention was to have the voice of Orson Welles, but his approach was perceived as being too dramatic. So, Hemingway (that co-authored the screenplay) replaced Welles.
In the song, “Zimbabwe”, Bob Marley sings, “Soon we'll find out who is the real revolutionary, Cause I don't want my people to be contrary.” In his view, to be a revolutionary was a function of time. Now we are in 2023, we are now in a position to judge who the true revolutionaries were. I leave that with you my fellow Zimbabweans. Zvakaoma.
Thank you for uploading my gran was from Lochgelly. She was born in 1920, her dad was on strike and was in fact blacklisted for his part in it. He fought in WW1 (as did a lot of the men involved)he was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded a D.C.M for gallantry. He was never down a mine again and it was a hungry few years for them until he got a job down the dockyard. Their valiance, strength and spirit in standing up to the injustice and social deprivation should never be forgotten. I’m proud to come from this community.
It's an attitude and a spirit that can't be forgot. The sacrifices that were made-in uniform, and on picket. Shared here so we all can remember. Thank you.
no mention of sylvia pankhurst--the cpgb would with the exception of Mick go on to sell out the miners in 84--some understanding of the duplicity of labour but no real understanding of the extent to which the labour party destroyed the working class movement in the UK --nice to see pictures of Harry Pollit Palme -Dutt and others. No mention of labour's role in the destruction of the PKI
yes-an obsequious attitude to the labour party that has continued on into the CPB. a role the labour party continue to play, with regard to present RMT strikes. are you any relation to Mick, by the way?
This looks like an installment on the entire ballet- I have a CRC record that's an orchestral suite of the whole thing, and another that's a piano suite, but not this.
