"...an experience you've denied me for the duration of my existence..."? what a pretentious thing to say. what does he expect? his father to lay buck naked before him and create insatiable desires within him? thank god im just here for jeremy.
Die " Dummheit " eines alten Mannes, hat diesen Film verstümmelt. Billy Wilder hat das alles vernichten lassen, weil der Film zu lang war. Heute würde man einfach 2 Teile daraus machen, fertig.
People today who compete in general knowledge professionally (semi-pro to be fair) do learn all these things just for the action. Steven actually knows all this stuff just because he's incredibly clever, knowledgeable and believe it's important.
because of nigel bruce watson was seen as a buffoon. this series made it clear Watson was an intelligent, credible man in his own right, but he was standing next to someone brilliant. He says watson, as a doctor, was a detective, that was the whole premise of the tv show 'House" that Dr House was actually 'holmes' only now as a doctor.
Jeremy Brett was the definitive Sherlock Holmes, no doubt about that, there is no other lens by which I can see the character. I am 50 now and Jeremy Brett transfixing Sherlock marked my childhood deeply as did Spock from Star Trek by Leonard Nimoy. A good deal of my infatuation with Science early on is due to these two wonderful actors complete transfiguration on the telly screen as the unfolding of every minute detail on the mental states the characters dwell in was literally brought to real life by them. Both actors born for the part with the good and the bad that such position entails they marked the golden age of TV production as no others have not and dare I say could not really replace them as they made the absolute measure by which all other imitations will be forever compared...I as thousand of others everywhere around the globe cannot thank them enough!
If you believe the god of the bible is 'perfect' you obviously haven't read the book, or read it whilst wearing rose-tinted spectacles, or have had it 'interpreted' for you by some self-proclaimed 'spokesman for god' religious charlatan. The god of the bible is the most despicable character in all of literature!
A fun curiosity. Thank you. Such a quintessentially, “British,” institution, made even more so by Fry, of all people, taking the trophy home. BTW, I got toboggan right, so that makes my mind officially more masterful than Stephen Fry’s . . . 😉
These are some incredibly difficult questions. Even Arthur Conan Doyle couldn't have answered these, he couldn't even remember Dr. Watson's first name or injury...
It's interesting that he labels Holmes as a minimalist and isolationist, beyond the work, when he's all about experiences, even if its not all conventional. He's got the violin and concerts, tobacco, coke unfortunately, his love of dogs and horses even if he doesn't have them himself, and of course his friendship and partnership with Watson that's probably kept him alive much longer than he would be alone. He's not a rock, he's highly emotional at times just in his own way.
