Hey there! This is Justin. I invite you to join me on my journey as I learn how and attempt to breed Western Hognose Snakes and feature them in cute/hopefully informative videos.
Occasionally I will feature reptiles other than my Westerns but the channel focus is on them.
Warnings: I baby talk my snakes…. I talk about and show the good times as well as the bad times. It’s a channel about snakes so there will be many times that feeding is shown.
@@heatherbrunner2165 Heather, did you message me on Morph Market under a different name? Not sure if you'll see this, but you can also contact me on Facebook messenger if you have that setup. I linked my Page in the description of this video.
Emily from Snake Discovery has mentioned having great success keeping hognose babies together for a while. Says they eat much better than keeping them separate.
@poochiew.9302 I actually tried that with him initially. Kept him in with his sister, but the only one who's appetite improved was hers, lol. I kept my first clutch of the year together in pairs of 3. I actually saw a reduction in appetite with them, and it only improved with separation.
@silverfoxx4012 that was originally the plan, but I haven't been able to source day old pinkies. Anything larger than the smallest pinkies probably wouldn't work.
@@Justin.HeterodonHome contact some exterminators? sometimes they might remove nests of wild rats and mice if they have babies you might get lucky asking them to keep a look out?
@jeromek1806 This stack of enclosures are actually from 2 different manufacturers. The top one is a 4' x 2' x 18" from Reptile Basics, while the bottom two are T8 enclosures from Animal Plastics. All enclosures shown have custom lighting and acrylic litter walls that I put in myself.
I'm the opposite I like twin spots a little more. But one of my favorite girls that I recently decided I should let go has chunky saddles from the beginning of her body. I mean I don't think I could say there's a hognose that I don't like 😆
I feel ya, my lad hasn't voluntarily eaten in four years, we even had to resort to tube feeding, I hated it! 😭 thankfully now he'll eat with just assisted help, plop the pinkie in his mouth and its down the hatch no problem, just doesn't ever so interest in trying to eat himself (apart from once, and that was my finger??)
I had a REALLY tough non feeder this season. She was too small to feed a whole pinky to, so i was trying pinky heads, then syringe feeding carnivore care. Finally she took sockeye salmon on her own after being absolutely offended by the other kinds of salmon and sardine and tuna and frog and etc - that's a lot of words for i hope he catches on and eats on his own!
Yeah, I've rolled through the usual scents and he has no interest in any of them. Contemplating bacon grease because I've heard that actually works sometimes.
@Justin.HeterodonHome I hope it works! I have also heard stories about people force or assist feeding babies for a year and having them one day just decide to eat. I'm glad you're not giving up on him. I hope you find whatever works🤞
snakes lose the milkyness to their eyes and body for a few hours to a couple days right before going milky again and shedding. As for the milk snake id advise double checking husbandry and if nothing changes it could warrent a general wellness check at a vet and bloodwork. I hope this helps. edit: also milk snakes are largely nocturnal in the summer. To help shedding and digestion humidity is your best freind in snakes. Keep the humidity above 50% around the clock, and during sheds increase humidity to 60/70%. snakes love fresh water because the lot of them only drink when they really need to. Next time you feed the snake with digestion issues id advise soaking the mouse/rat in lukewarm water then give it a good pat (but leave it a bit moist. You could also get rid of the aspen temporarily because if your feeding in the enclosure it can cause impaction.
In the case of the hognose snake that I thought was in shed, she did just go back into a deep blue a few days ago. This is my first time ever seeing a snake go from semi-shed color, back to completely normal for a week, and then straight into deep shed. The snake with digestion issues has pin worms, which is a known issue for this species apparently, but it's possible the parasite load became too heavy, so I have her on a probiotic and am looking to put her on a dewormer for a few days. As for the Milk Snake, I have no idea what she's up to. It could be that the season flip is causing her behavior to change, but more than likely it's simply too hot on her cool side. The centralized light on top of the enclosure is likely the culprit, so I'll have to get a smaller one or swap the light out for a different unit.
@Justin.HeterodonHome you could attempt fiddling around with a thermostat for the lamp that gets too hot, but snakes love to dislodge and move things. A couple months ago my ball python did the same thing went clear then back to blue and i was looking for a shed that wasnt there. Im not sure why they go clear but it is odd to see
I think my pictures could use a bit of work on the white balance to accentuate the colors more, but other than that, I believe the market is just too saturated right now for anything other than visuals to sell. I do know that if I were to toss the runt up there that he would probably sell instantly. He seems to have a following, and I've gotten private messages asking when he'll be up for sale.
@heatherbrunner2165 haha, I haven't forgotten. He's still only the size of a normal hatchling, but he can eat full-size pinkies now, so probably in the next few weeks, he'll be ready.
Lol, I've been chilling with my Super Arctic Conda female on my neck and just randomly felt a slobbery mouth grab me on the spine. No pain really, I originally thought she was crapping on my neck.
What about (and I think I'm going to try this) mixing some nutribac with water and using a syringe (without a needle) to dose them like you would do if you were giving them oral antibiotics or other medications?
@Upper_echelon_exotics I've tried this before with another snake, actually. I can't remember how it went, but I'm hesitant to try again after reading the warning label that says to keep it dry and not to mix with water.
I tried to assist feed with gloves and it was not working. I tried without gloves and got it in her mouth but she spit it out and I was too nervous to resort to force feeding
@Upper_echelon_exotics The problem with him, is that he ate a single pinky head after hatching and then stopped for 2 months. He lost half of his 4 grams in that time, so I was terrified that brumating him would end his short life. The perplexing thing is that, until recently, he would actually get excited for food, push his face into it like he wanted to eat, but he just never opens his mouth. After a while he would get tired and stop trying, till now where we're at the point that he shows no interest at all.
@@anntowle1706 she doesn't, but my ball pythons do. I put her in this large enclosure because she was constantly trying to escape her smaller one. I guess she just craves the room. They do get let out supervised.
Lol 😂 I tell mine they are going to get a spanking all the time. I even lightly pretended to by tapping my finger around where their butt would be if they had one 😅
