As these windows can be adjusted remotely by the crew it means they don't have to depend on inattentive people/self-centred pricks opening or closing the blinds when required. Hopefully blocks people from suddenly opening a blind when others are trying to sleep - I've had many sleep broken due to utter cnts doing just that . Also saves weight compared with blinds. I see from the comments there are knuckledraggers who don't approve of this system, even though it's self-evidently a massive aimprovement.

gracias, puede escuchar la conversación entre el ATC y el piloto en el canal 9 del auricular de un pasajero en United Airline, por lo tanto, estaba grabando este video y coloqué el auricular en la cámara. No traje ninguna radio para escuchar ATC en absoluto. Espero que lo hayas entendido.
These windows SUCK. They do not stop direct sunlight. I had to put on my sunhat, with the stupid thing fully "closed". Give me a plastic blind, anyday!

I trust it is based on the same technology that the original flat (as in not deep) screens use to (essentially) control the wavelengths (colours) and strength of the light coming from the background light through to the front of the screen. If I recall correctly, power is applied to crystals in the substance that then turn to let anywhere from all, to no light, through the substance. This does seem very slow, though. Think it is likely designed that way however to allow the eyes to adjust more easily.
