Hello Daniel Mwangi. 5 g is a 1L water plastic bottle top. Those who are used to doing it know that 1 palm full is 15 grams, so they apply into 3 planting stations. If you are using planter, there is calibration to deliver required quantity per acre same way we do for seed maize.
Hello Aluyii bizugbe. Yes. We don't plant GMOs also. We only show farmers how to do the right things when farming maize. Right variety, Right Nutrition, Right plant population, correct way of controlling weeds, pests and diseases
Both are good. During rains is best because you don't incur cost of irrigation. But irrigation is done at times when there are no rains & involves extra costs.
Hello RascalEd We just follow the guidlines and do things the right way. After just talking, we decided to grow so that we can show farmers what we did. This way farmers can compare their management practices one by one and correct mistakes
Hello Nelson Kamanga, Application is based on amount of fertilizer or N, P and K required by each plant from germination to maturity. Purpose of 2 Nitrogen based fertilizer is necessary to prevent leaching & disappearing to the environment. This ensures the elements are available to the plant throughout the growing period. In some cases we also do Foliar fertilizers
Hello Martin Mwangi. We planted several long season varieties in different areas of the farm. Some single and others double cobbers. Details of the same are available in agro-input shops near you.
Hello Toussaint Kodjo. We use pesticides. We have several in the market. That which we find very effective contain Acephate as active ingredient. Others that do well contain emmamectin Benzoate alone or in combination with Indoxacarb
Hello Toussaint Kodjo. NPK fertilizers contain Nitrogen, Phosphorous & Potassium in different ratios. Mixing that with urea only increases the Nitrogen Level. At planting, what is rrquired in high quantities is Phosphate. So increasing N may not help and will end up leaching or disappearing into the air. Best time to apply is at 6 weeks and do rhe right quantity
Hello Nelson Mukuka. For some areas, we removed tassel & leaves so you can see the cob. Since cob has reached maturity, it won't affect filling of grain. Also we do that to allow sunlight light inside so we can plant crops like beans
Hello Daniel Mwangi, Depending on your strategy either crop is profitable depending on season. Farm-gate value for those harvested green for roasting is 200,000ksh (1,562USD). When dry & shelled is 248,000ksh (1,941USD). For those with large farms, they would rather sell dry & shelled because U can't get buyers to consume like 50 acres crop
How do one produce compost to plant corn, and is it compulsory to use manure as with DAP, because the last one planted were burned off by manure and the corn refused to germinate . So can I plant with only DAP
Hello niyiadeola Manure needs to decompose. U must have used raw one. In the process of changing to manure, they go through a stage that produce amonia gas. When mixed with water, they form acid that burn the crop. U can produce yours or buy from cattle, goat, sheep farmers. Theirs is always decomposed already. Compost is slow release fertilizer. Will be available to your crop for whole the growing period. If not available just plant with high phosphatic fertilizers
Hello Niyiadeola. Classic DAP is whole dark in colour and is ok as long as it is indicated 46% P. The one I'm using is a 23:23:0. It Has some blend of 23% N & 23% P. I did not find 46% & ended up using 10gm per stem instead of 5gm. Manure MUST be well decomposed. Raw will burn the crop, reduce plant population and cause leaves to start shrinking & twisting affecting photosynthesis.

@@ronaldotwoma Hello Ronald Otwoma. Yes. Very much achievable. From Mid March to Mid September vihiga i.e Whole of Maragoli & Bunyore and Tiriki areas receive long rains. Temperatures are also condusive. The only challenge is land size, improve nutrition & farmers love planting short season varieties twice a year.
Hello Namugi Ronald. Use a 1L water bottle top or cocacola one. With time you will get used to the quantities using your palm which normally carries 3 to 4 bottle tops
Hello Joseph Semakula. With 75cm by 25cm, do 1 seed per hole. For 2 seeds per hole do 75cm by 50cm. Total plant population will be 10kg bag of seed maize per acre
