Think about what a badass Sam must have looked like in 1942 here. Like everything going on in the world and he sees rick and thinks “this guy is my friend and he needs me”
Love the cinematography lighting effect. I realised that light plays an important role. Look at Bogart's face. Half in light and half in darkness. It shows the internal struggle of a decision. You will find many scenes like that which shows Bogart's face half illuminated. Whereas Ilsa' s face mostly fully illuminated. I feel the whole movie has a deeper meaning. Rick represents America. America has not yet entered the war. Ilsa' husband is from czechoslavakia where Germany invaded. The French guy represents France whom the German invaded. Rick that is America finally enters the war in support of the French where you can see at the end scene Rick tells the French guy " it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship". One of the greatest movies ever made. Notice in this scene where he is drowning his sorrows he ask Sam a question. December 1941 he mentions what time is it in New York? December 1941 was the attack on Pearl harbour. If you scrutinize each scene it is mind blowing
Anyone talked about Sam’s loyalty? There was a time when loyalty was a sexy human quality before all the professionalism and self centeredness came into existence
