Hello Everybody! SkyLord Bob here.

Welcome to my new channel!

-On this channel you can watch videos from Air Combat Simulators,
mostly from IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad and Rise of Flight.

I will also create videos with technical and historical content
regarding the WW1 and WW2 period.

I`ve been flying in flight simulators for over 15 years now.
Start messing aroung with MFS2004 and FSX, and after a while move
to good old Il2 Sturmovik 1946 and later on Rise of Flight and IL2 BoS.
I hope that you`ll enjoy in my videos that I`ll upload from time to time.
I don`t have much time but I`ll do my best!
Watch, like, subscribe and Please comment!

Enjoy! :)

I would like to find a source of inertia starters for small engines. It's a pain to keep batteries maintained for all the different machines I have that I only need to use 2 times a year. It would be nice to be able to just turn on the magneto, give it a crank for about a minute, and pull the handle. Might have to do it a couple of times, but that beats fighting with a dead battery all the time.

It is perfectly feasible to energise the flywheel via the manual winding socket using an external electric motor a short shaft and overrun clutch with current supplied from batteries on a trolley. Such trollies were standard equipment at pre war US civil airports, relieving ground staff of the irksome job of winding up the flywheel. I can use a 1940,s Willy,s CJ3 Jeep to start a large radial aero engine ,i,e a Wright R-2600 Double Cyclone. On the back of the Jeep,s 3-speed Warner Gearbox is a power take off,like a tractor, . A shaft with a dog clutch runs from the PTO under the Jeep,s body to a strong flexible shaft attached to the PTO, the other is a hand held epycliyc angle drive gearbox with throw out clutch ,like a large Black&Decker electric drill. Once the R-2600 is primed ready to start . One mechanic sits in the Jeep it,s , 2.2 litre 'Go Devil' engine ticking over, hand brake on, foot on the clutch, selects neutral waits for a signal from the second engineer with the external starter gearbox coupled to the flywheel winding shaft nods his head to the jeep driver. He engages the PTO then feeds in the Jeep,s clutch and throttle. The Jeep is now driving the starter flywheel up to the required rpm . When the gear whine sound is right, two nods from the engineers head the pilot pulls the starter clutch as normal, the engine fires, Jeep driver dis engages the PTO as the second engineer disengages the external starter using the throw out clutch , he walks slowly backwards inline with the wing leading edge clear of the spinning propeller , jumps in the jeep to be driven clear as the aircraft is ready to taxy out for take off.

I'd sure like to see more about the gear train and how the device actually works. I saw one of these on a truck, and thought it was a massive additive gear train attached to a flywheel, but I guess not.
@brianbaird6528
@brianbaird6528 3 месяца назад
Your original guess is correct. You turn the crank or run a small battery or generator -powered motor to get the flywheel spinning at a crazy RPM. Then you pull a handle (or engage an electrical solenoid to pull the handle) which connects the flywheel to the engine through gears, thus cranking the engine with the energy stored in the flywheel. This ability to gradually store lots of energy in a flywheel, then dump all the energy into starting the engine is what allows the use of very small batteries or no battery at all, which saves weight. A battery large enough to directly (not using inertia energy storage) crank a monster engine like was used on these planes would have been large and very heavy, likely over 200 pounds in those days. But a tiny lawn-mower battery would have been able to spin up an inertia starter enough to start the engine. If the war drags on and manufacturing of batteries becomes impossible, just hand crank the thing.

They should have made the rocket longer so it's faster and put a small gyro inside to maintain its trajectory with small fins. This would have allowed to be aimed accurately

Very nice video. I can really see now why Johnny Johnson who was RAF top scorer took the gyro sight out of his personal spit and kept the older style reflector sight! (He claimed it needed him to spend "too much time with my head in the office and not enough looking for danger"). I think I'll stick with Hartmanns method and just get stupid close!

I always thought that hand cranking loaded a spring motor which was spun up, then coupled to the engine via a clutch.

Maybe you will not like it just like me. I still use fixed reticle. Any way, thx for watching and comment! ;D
@JK-rv9tp
@JK-rv9tp 4 года назад
Interesting video and nicely done. Couple things to mention. You see the fixed reticle through the left collimator lens and the moving one through the right lens, which are spaced to match your eyes. Because the images are at infinity, you see them superimposed over each other apparently out in space and the sight head itself is actually a double image in your vision. But of course the game can't replicate that. Pilots resisted using the gyro sight when it first came out because it took some time to master but once they figured it out it was known as the "Ace Maker". The biggest advantage to using it was it allowed you to do away with tracer ammo. This is a huge tactical advantage when your target doesn't get a warning from tracer passing him when you start shooting and pilots really warmed up to it once this was realized. Watch WWII gun camera footage and a lot of films show shooting without tracer. This tells you they are using a gyro sight. The game needs to have the option to delete tracer in the ammo loadout.
