My theory of Gothel's Past, In the past, young Gothel met Wilhelm at a masked ball(as it said in the movie when Rapunzel found an old chest where it had many of Gothel's old invitations because she invited to so many royal balls). After they dance together, they became close friends. They would do everything together, they would go horseback riding and they would attend balls together. Gothel had feelings for Wilhelm and wanted to be with him forever, but Wilhelm never knew Gothel "loves" him. In his eyes, Wilhelm sees Gothel as a "friend" and only likes her as a "companion". Rothbart(like in the film Swan Lake, he uses his black magic to disguise himself as different people while tricking others with his evil plans) disguises himself and pretended to be Wilhelm, and Gothel believed him and thought "Wilhelm" loves her too. While Rothbart disgusting himself as Wilhelm, he would write "love" letters to her and even made her a portrait her and "Wilhelm"(it show in the movie where Penelope found and was holding an old portait of young Gothel holding hands with a man and man's face has been torn, we learn later that the man in the painting was "King Wilhelm"). Gothel believed and thought the gift was from her "lover". One night, Rothbart(who still disguises himself as "Wilhelm") told her to meet in the maze in the garden nearly by the castle. He claims he will always "love" her and never would "hurt" or "lied" to her and gave her a ring and Gothel actually thought that "Wilhelm" wants to marry her, she was happy for a while. Until one day, the "real Wilhelm" fall in love and marries a queen from a nearby kingdom, and Gothel became heartbroken and believed that "Wilhelm" has "betrayed" and "cheated" on her for the queen. Rothbart evilly smiled; knowing his plan worked while secretly watching her sink to her knees and sobbing. Rothbart vaishes into the air and later marries a woman and had a daughter name, Odile. Because Gothel is a witch with strong and unbreakable powers, her magic and along with her thoughts in her mind have overpowered her and made her heart become "hard as stone", "cold as ice" and the "light of her life" died. She later learned that Wilhelm and the Queen had a daughter name, Rapunzel. Still, believing Wilhelm had "betrayed" her, Gothel later kidnapped Rapunzel in the middle of the night and hidden her a manor behind a magic wall Gothel had created. She thinks Wilhelm deserves to "suffer" as she did(since she said the movie, "He deserves to suffer as I did!"). I know many fans believe that Odile is Gothel. They're different. If you look closely at both of them, Gothel has green eyes while Odile has brown eyes. Odile's lips are smaller while Gothel's are bigger. Gothel is taller than Odile. Odile hair's more feather-like while Gothel's more proper how would an aristocrat wear. Gothel has fair skin while Odile is paler. Gothel wears the colors green & gray, she like to wear fur term gowns, hats, and masks. Odile wears the colors red, blue, and black. Odile's likes to wear feathered dresses or ballet tutus. Odile sometimes likes to wear jewelry such as pearls, rubies, emeralds, and diamonds and see her wearing an emerald necklace(when Rothbart puts evil magic in her necklace, it was from emerald-green to a ruby-red). Odile's personalities are spoiled, loud, bratty, funny, and she more childish than Gothel. Gothel's personalities are dull, petty, bossy, narrow-minded and she more lady-like than Odile. We don't see Odile having magic coming out of her hands. Unlike Gothel, we just see Odile transforming from a bird into a girl and later we see Rothbart put some magic into her 3rd favorite necklace to disguise herself as Odette while tricking Prince Daniel.
