This song always brings tears to my eyes. I think it is special in different ways to many an American. to me I think of my great-grandmother who came over from Italy when she was only 16. I was blessed enough to know her well into my teens until she passed away at 103.
I Love these. Lady's they have beautiful voices l wish l was able to see them in person but my body is feebul from hard work they are Angel's on stage.
"Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" On the first day of January Eighteen ninety-two They opened Ellis Island and they let The people through And first to cross the threshold Of that isle of hope and tears Was Annie Moore from Ireland Who was all of fifteen years Isle of hope, isle of tears Isle of freedom, isle of fears But it's not the isle you left behind That isle of hunger, isle of pain Isle you'll never see again But the isle of home is always on your mind In a little bag she carried All her past and history And her dreams for the future In the land of liberty And courage is the passport When your old world disappears But there's no future in the past When you're fifteen years Isle of hope, isle of tears Isle of freedom, isle of fears But it's not the isle you left behind That isle of hunger, isle of pain Isle you'll never see again But the isle of home is always on your mind When they closed down Ellis Island In nineteen forty-three Seventeen million people Had come there for sanctuary And in springtime when I came here And I stepped onto its piers I thought of how it must have been When you're fifteen years Isle of hope, isle of tears Isle of freedom, isle of fears But it's not the isle you left behind That isle of hunger, isle of pain Isle you'll never see again But the isle of home is always on your mind The isle of home is always on your mind
This group along with David (have seen them in person many times since their debut 20 years ago) have yet to be beat by the succeeding ladies and directors. Just saw the latest iteration 10 days ago and I stand by my statement. Have to give props to their newest member Emma. She may bring them back to their greatness
And now that I have a grandchild, I'll be sure to teach her of her heritage. Between her mother (my daughter) and her father, who also went through he'll to come to this country, she has so much to be proud of.
All four of my grandparents came through Ellis Island from Ireland (1900-1910). None of them met until they came here. They suffered greatly on the voyage over and would never talk about it, but they instilled a sense of pride that my children feel to this day. They were the source of strength for my family. Their children solidified it during the Great Depression and World War 2. They were fearful and yet fearless at the same time. I owe so much to them.
My family came through in 1900; hers came earlier in the late 1700s. We first saw each other in 1961 in the Great Smokies, NC and we knew instantly. And so it was that we lived in a golden age, raised out daughters, were thankful that the Lord allowed us to be in this wonderful country and time. 60 years and more were fantastic. Then I had to lay her to her rest. I would like to do it all over again, the same way. Grumpy to Snow.

You got the chorus lyrics very _slightly_ wrong; they _start_ with "Isle of hope," yes, but the last line of said chorus is actually, "but the isle of *_home_* is always on your mind!" They're singing about being in a land of hope & dreams, with an unknown future, but that despite how amazing/frightening it might be, you're always going to miss/think about the _home_ you came from (in this case the isle/island of Ireland).
I remember this lovely talented young lady...wondering around our neighborhood in a cute little dress...barefoot... usually with a runny nose around the age of 3... she was just starting to study the Suzuki method for volin....... the rest speaks for itself. Bravo 👏 Hannah!!!! You have always had to support of two amazing parents... they are great people....
My absolute favorite piece to play in orchestra as a kid. Was first violin but I stole the cello sheet music just so I could learn that part. It's beautiful
