Interesting!! Both sound good to me to be honest, though of course the tape takes the lead 😃 Both machines look fun to work on though, well built! The noise reduction is amazing.
Hey Will, thanks for having a listen! Yeah the tape always seems to have the edge with these things and adds a bit of secret sauce 😀. I liked the MD8 but have decided to move it on to make some space!
I guessed that Mix 2 was digital, but I couldn’t tell which was which between the other two. I think I might prefer the VHS for the top end of the guitars, but the metal cassette may have been fuller sounding, more body and bass. I preferred the vhs
Way cool 😎! This one has the same mojo/feel as a swap-ish song I have been working with for a few years. I have the electric guitar rhythm, couple of verses, a break, , a slide lead on one of your contraptions might work quite nicely. 🤔.. 😂 Keep up the good work. Peace ✌. 😊
This was what I was looking for. I wanted to hear how it processed drums. I've been looking at getting one of these for years, so I finally ordered one from ebay. I may even get my analog 4 track out, and try what you did here. This earned my sub. Looking forward to see what other vids you have.
Very happy to hear you found the video useful and many thanks for the sub! The SK1’s are a lot of fun to use and super crunchy when sampling. I recently picked up its big brother, the SK200 which has a few extra sample slots and tend to be a bit cheaper. Hope you enjoy using your Casio!
The soundtrack to a hot humid summer afternoon deep in the Mississippi delta, sitting on the porch of the wooden shack you call home, playing the blues on your homemade three string guitar. How is the guitar tuned?
@@wehappyfewmusic Thanks for the note. My 488 is still coming from Japan. He is a 100% seller on eBay, so I expect no problems. Paid a tad more, too. So, I'll let you know how it proceeds. Marc.
Sweet sound, man. Is this about the murder of the black kid Emmet Till, back in the 60's? Anyway, great tune. I had the 488 back in the 90's. Now I regret selling it. So I just bought a used one--the 688 is just too much for me. Thanks, man.
Hey, thanks very much, great to hear you enjoyed the tune and congratulations on getting your 2nd 488! The song is about a guy called PC George Clark and he was one of the first metropolitan police officers to be murdered in London. It was way back in 1846…..
Very nice. You mix it so it comes together great. My stuff sounds dull and tubby in one set of headphones yet shrill and earpiercing in another. Mixing baffles me. Well done to you.
Thanks so much for the positive feedback! I bet your mixes sound great, but it definitely helps to listen on a few different systems. I try to allow a bit of space for instruments to sit in their own frequencies range and sonic space (at least that’s my aim 😂). 👍
Wow this sounds soooo good. I don't have still conditions to practice on acoustic and I was thinking of buing first electric so I could start. Ok this sounds legitimate fire.
Hello, I still have mine. Like yours, tape B does not work, they all seem to have this problem. I really find the reverb incredible on this unit. I keep my unit even if I do not use it any more by nostalgia I guess, really had fun with it! Thank-you for posting this video, good job and great souvenirs! Thanks again.
Hi, that’s great that you’ve still got yours and good to hear you enjoyed the video! Yes, I was really impressed with the reverbs on this machine too. Thanks 🙏
@@wehappyfewmusic I bet. My recent buy a 424mkiii ended up having a bad Monitor level pot. Was the only thing wrong with an otherwise top condition machine. Will be in the shop a fair while as they wait for the part to come in on one of their bulk part orders.
@@YY-bv3ik You’re welcome and I hope it helps you get up and running with your 488! 👍 I wiped tracks 5-7 by recording new music on them, but recording silence over the previous material would do the trick too.
@@mikepass4435 Many thanks and great to hear you found it useful! I kept it pretty simple for the transfer to my computer (no mix bus compression etc). I’d recommend allowing a fair bit of headroom when transferring to digital though and going for a highish sample rate though (I used 24bit 48khz). Also double check that you’ve got both channels balanced on your audio interface to keep the stereo imaging of your mix intact.
That drum sound is unbelievable! How did that little kit sound so good??? It sounded like there was some reverb as well- I that just the room sound? I have never got a drum sound that good on my old tascam 8 track cassette recorder back in the day! Excellent work-
the question is what tape stock did you use. Try it with new production ATR or the like or Maxell UD XL . I own a TC-399 and it can take whatever BIA/EQ out there as it was the last Sony Consumer Reel to reel they made.
Good point and thanks for the suggestion. The tape is mystery unfortunately as it came with the machine, and I’ve now returned it to its owner. I’ve since bought a Revox A77.
@@wehappyfewmusic Correct. But I still think the problem is not that machine, but my IQ... This is my video that can show you I really had 238: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Al-w9curVdI.htmlsi=rCo-OGkMHC0Tc8tv
