Good video, unfortunately, it is so that if you connect the microphone to the bread box via USB, the voice effects no longer work, but only with the XLR
This is Korea. I've used the MV7 via USB for several years. Scarlett 2i2 4G doesn't need "dynamite". I purchased SM7B+Scarlet 2i2 4G for $600 a few days ago.
So funny, 20 seconds before I watched the video, I just removed my boom arm from my desk thinking "Wow, having a little desk stand is actually quite nice!"...And then I learned how awful it sounds so far away from my face. Wonderful..
Bahahah yep! It would be so great if the mic could exist nicely on the desk like that and still sound awesome. I'm glad I convinced you to stay with the boom arm!
Thank you, this was so helpful. Would you consider doing a video of a beginner podcast setup for an interview style on location? I have the Rode Wireless Go 2 and an iPhone 13 mini. We want to meet in a cafe and record our conversations. I’ve done a test with just the audio and it sounds okay. Also, what would you do if there is recorded music playing in the background?
Oo yes I do have a few of those types of videos in the pipelines! Recording in a cafe is going to be a little bit tricky as far as how to manage the background noise. Is there a reason you want to go to a cafe specifically? Rode Wireless Go 2 and the iPhone 13 don't do a lot to manage background noise (as in, they're not designed to be super directional microphones), so you would be better off recording in a quieter location with that setup. We're working on some options though so stay tuned on the channel.
I genuinely believe that some people who watch or will watch this so stubborn that they'll not adopt half of these amazing insights! Thanks for bringing this to my attention, subbed! 😊🤙🏽
I’m thinking of starting a podcast for “old” folks like me - Baby Boomers (is that a term used only in the U.S?) I’m retired so it wouldn’t be about career or business advice or anything to do with that. I haven’t done a lot of research on a topic other than knowing what my hobbies are.
Yep we use the term baby boomers here in AUS too! Well you can really start a podcast about anything, as long as you have the passion for it! Also knowing that you need a lot of topics and that it can take a couple of years for the podcast to take off (depending on the audience).
I like the quality - video and audio - on your channel. But mic placement is bothersome, I can’t see your mouth as you talk. I hope I’m not being offensive. 😎
Not offensive at all! This was one of our earliest videos, and we didn’t realise it was bothersome until afterwards. ☺️ I had feedback on a couple of videos about the placement of the mic and we fixed it up for any recordings we’ve done since. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the heads up on the SE DynaCaster vs. Shure SM7B. The SE sounds legit and with the integration of their Dynamite booster tech, it's a far easier option for the average home user to use than the SM7b which requires monster amounts of gain to make it work. I'm going to give it a looksee next time I find one in front of me. I'm genuinely curious to hear how it works with my voice. Plus, I'm a sucker for microphones that have the color red incorporated into them. As a rule, I'm obligated to buy one whenever possible. ;) One thing: Thank you for pointing out that annoying cable on the body of the SM7B! That has driven me crazy since the first time I put my hands on one of them! It's distracting for me because all I can think of is something snagging it and snapping the wire! I wish Shure would internalize that wire both for protection and for aesthetics. BLEH!
Hehehe - I like that you need to buy microphones with the colour red! Yes definitely give the sE Dynacaster a look/listen. I'm currently obsessed with it. Also YES to the super clunky design on the SM7B. Why did they do that? It feels like a recipe for disaster.
SM7b if raw signal or very noisy room. RE20 if I can EQ etc. For my voice anyway (high bass/low baritone, the RE20 is more articulate. I have both). Also, I saw the Rolling Stones the other day and clearly observed that the horns, tambourines and harmonica were mic’d with RE20s (ugly greenish ones) the drums had a few as well.
Absolutely on point description of the use cases Mike. Love that. RE20's are definitely good for horns. Though I would have assumed the tambourines and harmonica would have been too harsh for that mic as it's already got a lot of those higher frequencies straight out of the box. That's interesting! I'll have to track down that video and give it a listen for myself. Thanks!
It's definitely come a long way from the very humble beginnings. hehe. Still not the production powerhouse we use for bigger projects, but for smaller projects and DIYers, it's proving to be a great competitor to others in the field!
Great video! Thank you! Would you consider doing a video of the beginner set up for interview style video podcast? I would love to see your guidance with two mics and two cameras😊
Anyone know why every time I turn the mic on, I have to readjust the volume knob in the pack of the rode pod mic usb? Seems with settings stored on the mic, the volume to the headphones would be as well? Am i missing something?
For voiceover work, I would recommend the Rode PodMic (dynamic mic) which has XLR connection that can connect to the Motu m2. You'll have a better quality sound and more level control for your setting!
I saw two more comparisons of these two microphones tested with a female voice, but this is the first time, when I would like to EQ the sound from the SM7B for podcasting. The DCM8 doesn't need an EQ for podcasts to me.
Yeah I definitely would have to EQ the SM7B to get it to where it sounds nice for my voice. DCM8 I agree doesn't need anything much at all. I think the SM7B does sound quite alright for the male voice (Alex in the video), but I still prefer it for him too.
@@fredoverflow The settings on the microphones themselves (bottom of mics for those playing at home) are completely flat for both microphones for this video. No EQ adjustments were made at all on post-production either. Completely flat. Only a bit of compression applied to normalise volumes. Hope that helps!
Oh I'm glad you like the DCM8. It is absolutely my "go-to" in the studio here for sure. Gives me a nice bit of sparkle doesn't it! Thanks for commenting.
Hey! Are you using the web browser or the Descript app on your computer? The EQ and editing tools haven't changed in Descript since the video was recorded, so I'm just wondering whether it's a web browser situation? Let me know and I'll see if I can get to the bottom of it for you. Also - we have a full completely free course that helps you with Descript here (which includes how to edit and Eq etc easily: www.bambymedia.com/diypodcaster
The pop filter is touching the RE 20, which renders the pop filter almost useless. The further away a pop filter is from the microphone, the more effective it is.
Thank you so much for your channel and proud of a fellow Aussie doing awesome work online. If I want to kick off my podcast, and don't have a community yet, don't have "exclusive" content yet for a patreon or for content to be behind a paywall... What payment platform should I use for anyone listening to my podcast that just want to donate money to support the podcast without expecting anything in return? Just simply donating. Like you I live in Australia so not sure if one platform is better vs another especially when it comes to claiming any taxes, or proper records of the donations.
Fello Aussie hooray! Nice to have you here. There are a few ways you can take donations. Buy Me A Coffee is a good one: buymeacoffee.com/ . There is also Fanlist: www.fanlist.com/features/ though that has a few more features to play with. Some of the podcast hosts also make it really easy for you to receive donations. I personally recommend Captivate for that. You can setup "tips" from within there and make it simple: www.captivate.fm/signup?ref=briannaansaldo1. Then as far as tax compliance goes, Quaderno makes it easy there too (though it's not cheap): quaderno.io/
I loved this! Thanks Brianna and Kendall for sharing these insights with us. I'm always eager to improve and looking forward to applying some of these techniques. One that really resonated with me is the tip to listen back to your guest interviews. Since I have begun editing the episodes myself, I have definitely noticed major improvements in my interview style and quality.
I'm glad it was helpful! I tried to keep nice and simple, and for vocals there really are a few EQ's changes that you can make that will make a huge difference to how good the sound is. Thanks for watching and for the nice comment.
It is definitely a warmer sound for the Shure isn't it! I just can't get past the terrible foam pop filter on the MV7. It highlights the breaths too much for me. But easily fixable with a better foam filter on top!
Congratulations on your excellent RU-vid videos. As a fellow Aussie, I love hearing a local person doing reviews and not only is your content fabulous, you have a great voice and presentation style. I do radio preproduction where we pre-record our weekly community radio program. I'm after the best mic for the work that we do and I think you've convinced me to spend the extra and get the Podmic over the NTusb when doing work d4ry🎉from the Rodecaster Pro 2. Keep up the great work!
Oh yay! Hello fellow Aussie. It's always s nice hearing from Aussies on here. If you're using the Rodecaster Pro 2 - the Rode PodMic will suit that very nicely. We have one of those too that we use in our other studio, and they're a match made in heaven together. More costly, but more professional and less mucking around in the long run!
@@bambymedia I run a community radio program on 3ZZZ and the combination of Rodecaster Pro 2, a pair of Procaster mics as well as a pair of Podmic USB mics going into my imac running Logic and Protools to produce and edit the final product is awesome! Listeners can't believe that they're listening to shows produced in my home study that's not even acoustically treated! 😃 I'm going to give the Podmic USB a good workout using Rode Connect software when I'm not near the Rodecaster Pro. Keep up the great work!
Can you do a mic battle between sE Dynacaster vs Podmic USB vs Shure MV7 vs Rode NT USB? You seem to own all of them and they are also similarly priced. Very good content by the way. Very helpful!
It far exceeds the podmic in sound quality for sure. I've been using it now for months, and I also recently put it up against some other heavyweights, and I keep coming back to it. The depth in the sound is unmatched in this price range (and a lot higher too). I'm in love with it personally.
