Hi everybody! Danielle here. On this channel you'll find all things related to living with a disability - specifically Spina Bifida. I get asked questions so often about what it's like to live life in a wheelchair, so I decided this would be the best format to do that. Lack of exposure is the cause of misunderstanding. I think most people assume that my life is always super difficult and wonder how I can have a positive attitude. But I think we all have challenges we face, and it's up to us to face them with strength and joy. So my goal is to show how I overcome challenges, and to encourage people to thrive - whether they have a disability or not!

SUBSCRIBE and enjoy watching! :)

What a comprehensive explanation! The visual aid and summarization was balanced perfectly. Also, I would love that as a poster.

for a quick trip, get a gym bag and sling it over your shoulder. if you need a cart, you can ask an employee to push it for you as a disability accommodation under ADA. as an alternate a backpack worn in front

if i ever win the lotto and probably won't but if i did i'd build or remodel a motel for wheelchairs and make them more accessable especially the high beds. i love to travel don't get to much anymore but the beds are a hard thing for me to get on i can slide off but not on.

Great video I have low vision I wear glasses/contacts thankfully I have not needed to use pre-board as much but I did on my last flight to Omaha Nebraska. I have a condition that some people can get and it can cause you to not walk I am grateful that I am able to, not a lot of people know about it. It is a unseen disability called hydrocephalus or water on the brain.

How do you manage to move yourself along so well whilst balancing a basket on your lap? I see that you're using one hand to hold the basket while pushing with the other and you alternate. I'll probably be zig-zagging all over the place if I try that. Folks in the store will think I'm drunk. 😂

I have a mental health disability and receive some income from Social Security. I have a B.A. from the University of Tennessee and would like to return to school to obtain either a Master’s or a PhD. Do you offer any help with student aid I wouldn’t be obliged to pay back or do you know of agencies that do. I am not interested in loans and grants only work for Bachelor’s Degrees. I think a scholarship would be my best option but I don’t know where to look or what to look for. Are there scholarships available for people with a mental disability? I reached out to the University I attended but never heard back from them. I looked online but everything was either for the deaf or blind or people with physical disabilities. Who can I reach out to about these issues? Thank you.

Hi, nice video. My daughter is special needs and has been a a wheelchair for 16 years. The 2 main issues I have are carpeted floors and beds being to high. She is unable to maneuver herself. She is in a manual wheelchair and I am her motor. I transfer her from wheelchair to bed. Since I am only 5 foot tall, the bed being too high is an issue when I’m transferring her. Pushing a wheelchair on carpet is not easy. I prefer laminate flooring. We stay exclusively at BestWestern hotels and have for over 40 years. Most of them have done great jobs at accessibility. I always offer suggestions if there something that can be addressed or suggestions for their next remodel. I also give positive feedback after each stay for the things that I found were helpful and made our life easier. I look forward to watching your other videos.

Thanks for making this video upon history of ADA. Case example of ADA discrimination within our society remains issue today despite law that Congress passed into law. As disabled veteran whom uses wheelchair good thing common sense always prevails within government when in case government chooses to non-comply with laws of our land here case example trying gain simple access to public courthouse order file legal motions per Ocala, FL federal courthouse back in 2022 a federal building that was constructed in 1981 after the 1969 Architectural Barriers Act law where buildings must be accessible when access problem was made aware both Clerk of Court and Judge and in overseeing legal case Judge Lammens cited "no legal merit" on disability access being apart on case here government acted above law discriminating and failing to address issue if this was not case why then since 2022 years later has government still to this day never address access issue. Negligence of VA cost myself my leg May 2020 had received death threat attending Hanger Clinic appointment in Gainesville, FL sought emergency motion for protection said protection was denied. Had foregoing justice willfully and knowingly despite public law Court would not comply adhere with ADA accessibility law. Foregoing had zero justice zero compensation from VA's negligence causing harm then add insult injury was discriminated against. End day here adding insult to injury had hop on one leg over several curbs order use wheelchair with assistance from my caregiver as are an amputee order file legal motions on the legal case to this day years foregoing nothing was ever done with access issue so reached out with Congresswoman Kat Cammack 1/13/2024. Formally requesting Congress follow up with Judiciary upon the Ocala courthouse, and local government on the access issue per Marion County Building Safety Department requested back formal letter what will be done on ADA access compliance so others do not have go through experience that I had. One would think given public law and access for purpose of public purpose that government on this case would had long ago brought up to standard of law accessibility. Lets see how long it takes for government to comply with law and bring up to standard the curbs changed slope accessible ramps at Ocala, FL legal complex area of Courts.

Hi, I just found your RU-vid site and was inspired by you! I am a senior and have recently had to use a walker and would also like to use a power wheelchair. Can you recommend an affordable brand of wheelchair. I am a tall 5'10" woman and weigh about 200 pounds. I am so impressed with your positive attitude. I have been rather reclusive and do not get out much. I am now looking into a care facility and am hoping to become more social. Thanks for listening.

Thanks so much! I’m so glad you found me 😀 I don’t really have any experience with power wheelchairs because I’ve always used manual. But I know Quickie is a really good brand and they do both manual and power chairs. Or a scooter may be a good solution if you only need the power for when you go places.

It can be very difficult for persons with disabilities to see themselves as attractive or to think others could see them as attractive. Many people ask me about the prospect of relationships. The only way I would consider talking to a woman is if I knew she was interested in me, otherwise I'm not going to waste my time.

I had a Rogue for 2 years. Within the first 4 months, the back adjustment broke, and I had to send it back to the factory. Once I got it back, the front castor would make a cracking noise. I went to fix it, thinking a bolt was coming loose, but no . The noise I was hearing, was the frame cracking above where the castor attaches. It eventually fell off completely, and I went back to Quickie.

Why have I not found you before? I too am in a wheelchair, but only for the past couple of years, so my wheelchair (who was christened Zippy) has only a few things. One upgrade I made to her was to purchase a back with adjustable lumbar support - game changer! I also had to change my tires to more robust ones as I live in a wee town in the Canadian Arctic, so I am on snow eight months of the year, with the rest of the year being dirt or mud, depending on the season. That cup holder is something that I have often bemoaned that I need, so a HUGE thank you for giving that info!!! I am a little confused about the scissor brakes, so I am going to research them more to see if they would benefit my situation. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Being independent is something that I always prided myself on, so this has been a rather hard pill to swallow. By learning from you and other members of the ‘wheels community’, I am confident that I can regain a modicum of my independence back. A lot of my family tells me not to be silly and they love helping - and to a lot of people, I must look silly - but for my soul, I NEED to regain some, even if it’s just a bit.
