Viz dub bores me to tears. It's everything wrong with modern dubs. They're so busy trying to just do direct translations that they don't actually adapt anything. There's no localization and so it sounds like people just going through the motions.
Okay. In my personal opinion, I adore both dubs and I will always keep them in my collection. At Viz Media, I like that the story is close to and the same as the original, but I also like Dic's version of their music like - "Carry On, Rainy Day Men, etc." I love both dubs and both will remain a part of my heart.
The DiC is inaccurate, but only if you are looking at it from the lens of the Japanese version. It is inaccurate, but the characters have a lot more personality and sound like characters that talk normally. "30? You said you studied!" Not only is Mom pissed that her daughter messed up, but she is disappointed that her daughter would bs her about her studying. It depicts Usagi/Serena as a teenager who is lazy and irresponsible. Which is what she is. Ikuko then wants to solve the issue by sending her away to study some more. As opposed to: "Stop bringing home grades like this!" This doesn't tell us anything beyond what Ikuko is feeling at the moment. Obviously she is upset, but there is none of that depth here. Usagi has bad grades. Ikuko is mad. Thats it.
