Wrong Amy, you forgot one major detail. Indy was the one that was abel to find the ark the nazis would have kept digging in the wrong direction and eventually give up.
The version I'm watching here has French subtitles. When Sheldon says, in English, "Here's my jaw... drop it," the French subtitle says, "Voici mon conseil... laisse tomber." The subtitle doesn't really match the English. Translated literally, it's "My advice... give up." The expression "laisse tomber" could be literally translated as "drop it," but when Sheldon says "jaw... drop it," he's daring Amy to astonish him with her insight, to say something jaw-dropping (which she does). The French translation, instead, is insinuating that the plot of "Raiders" is airtight, so Amy should give up on nitpicking it before she even begins. Not sure whether to congratulate the subtitle writer for figuring out how to keep the line funny in French, or to castigate the writer for botching the translation.
Sorry Amy, but that's wrong. Without Indy, the Nazis would've acquired the medallion from Marion and discovered the secrets of the Ark. Meaning they would have found a way to weaponize it. Plus, the movie isn't really about acquiring the Ark. It's about Indy discovering that some things are more important than ancient treasures. Indy is a hero because he places humanity, family and love over his career. That's what makes him different from Belloc, who only cared about fame and glory.
No, Mrs. Anti-vaxxer. If Indy hadn't done what he did, the ark wouldn't have ended up in an American warehouse at the end. The Nazis, having failed the first time, could've used their gruesomely discovered knowledge to their advantage and used the ark again, more properly. Indy took it from them, and thus, saved the day.
If Indy hadn't blown up the plane, the Ark would have been flown to Berlin, opened in Hitler and the Nazi high commands presence, and fhoom! No more nazis, no WW2, no holocaust...so good job there Indy, you caused WW2. 😜
Unfortunately for these more materialistic nerds the point of the movie was not the ark. It was the character development of Indiana Jones. The point of the plot was NOT who gets the ark but for Indiana Jones to realize that certain objects are more than just a prize for treasure hunters. This 'plot hole' argument was not thought through at all. Some people apparently missed the 'what is the message' portion of their literature classes.
Indiana Jones thought he was saving the Ark, but really, the Ark that saved him. The Ark, and a little faith. That's not a plot hole, it's a major theme.
Except that the Nazis were going to fly the ark directly to Berlin, where it might have killed thousands more Nazis. But Marion! blew up the plane by accident, so Indy still didn't do anything.
Indy correctly deduced where the Ark was... without his correction to there calculations the Ark would have remained hidden. After he found it and had it taken... he then took it back and got it on board a ship... Forcing the Germans to recapture it and take it to their secret Island instead of Berlin. Amy apparently slept through the movie.
Indy found the Ark. The German's were digging in the wrong place and would not have found it. And there is no guarantee they would have realized their mistake and found it later. They could have just quit after not finding it the first time and thought that it didn't exist in the first place.
Amy is the least likable of all the roles. She is written to be about the same intellect as Sheldon, but while the writers give Sheldon all kinds of abnormal social imperfections that he's not even aware of, which makes one almost sorry for him despite his complete lack of empathy at times. They only gave Amy the part that she's horny for Sheldon. She's essentially the real "smart ass" of the series. And just not as likable as the rest.
Amy is intensely odd for most of her appearances, it's the influence of the others (and slightly Sheldon) that she adapts and becomes a complete human, then Sheldon almost does, too.
Others have pointed out good reasons, but a very simple, pivotal role Indy plays in Raiders is that he's the one, not the Nazi's, that actually finds, deciphers, locates, enters, discovers-real-location-of, enters, and finds the Arc. Without him, the per usual co medically incompetent Nazis would still be digging in the desert. Also, let's not forget how essential Sallah is in all these goings-ons.
She's wrong and here's why. If Indy didn't get the statue for Belloq at the beginning, Belloq gets killed trying to get it and the Nazis never have a clue about the ark.
and it's possible.. Berlin didn't know Belloq's location where he took the ark as well, radio silence (top secrecy) and the ark remained there for years after killing all of them for opening it.
The existence of a large concrete submarine base suggests that the Nazis hold that island location and would have followed up after all the mysterious lights in the sky; always assuming the Ark has limited range and didn't kill all Nazis everywhere.
So: agents in the US organisation that employs Indy? Competent agents who would have (probably slowly) followed up the clues and deduced the Arks location without him using someone like Bellocq.
Amy is completely wrong, and shows that she doesn't understand the movie at all. And neither, apparently, do Sheldon and the gang, or they've have immediately known she was wrong. The story of Raiders is not about Indy racing the Nazis for the Ark of the Covenant. That's the PLOT. The STORY of Raiders is Indy's quest to prove that he is different from Belloq. Why else do you think the film has that lengthy scene between the two of them in the Cairo tavern? The whole point of the film is set out in that scene. "I am a shadowy reflection of you," Belloq says. "Our methods have not differed as much as you pretend. It would take only a nudge to make you like me." Indy proves him wrong during the climax, when he is able to do something Belloq cannot: he turns away from his heart's desire. To say that Indy has no effect on the story is simply asinine. Without Indy, there IS no story. IT'S HIS STORY.
0:34 I understand Sheldon's appreciation. I remember a few years ago I sat an old girlfriend down and asked her to watch The Pope of Greenwich Village with me. She didn’t exactly love it or understand why it’s a great movie, but I was just happy she would let me share my favorite movie with her.
Without Indy, the Nazi wouldn't have located Mariam who had the headpiece to the Staff of Ra. They were following Indy to Napal. Then without Indy they wouldn't have located the Well of Souls to retrieve the Ark. Yeah, Indy did kind of make matters worse. The Ark would have been brought before Hitler ultimately annihilating the Nazi high command and end WW2 fast. Oops..
i actually like stories where the main character is more a passive observer to the action. It makes the story more relateable than the more improbable 'hero saves the world' narrative. There's not many of them about...Eyes Wide Shut, maybe.
Besides how much of a ripped off of Friends this garbage show actually is these useless characters are too ridiculous to live. People like these characters are the reason God created serial killers. Its sucks that the human genome is polluted by dweebs like this but decadence allows these mistakes to happen.
the best stretch of the imagination here is that detail oriented logical sheldon would have kept watching Raiders even after Indy replaced the golden idol on the pressure plate with sand. much less lifting a solid gold idol about the size of a large coconut with one hand so easily, damn thing couldve easily weighed 40 pounds.
Many gold decorative and holy objects from antiquity are either hollow or plated with gold leaf over wood; conclusion, there is nothing real in religion, except that someone steals the gold at the beginning. The modern equivalent is the gold toilet: tyrants tend to own these, so they can figuratively s**t on everything real people work for. But no gold toilet is anything but gold-plated, it's the symbolism tyrants want, and to keep the gold for themselves, not leave it in the House.
The nazis would have never found the Ark if it wasnt for indy. They were digging in the wrong spot. Granted when he showed up with the rocket launcher he could have blown up the Ark but couldn't do to its historic and mystical artifact. And the nazis where going to open and test it anyway before presenting it to Hitler. So in a when he didnt really prevent anything. And the US govt ends up with it any way haha
