Farmer Dan farms pigs and cash crops with his wife Janet, kids Hannah, Dominic, Aaron, Anthony, Jordan and Kate, and parents Matt and Fran in southwestern Ontario Canada.
Back in the early 80s when I was farming we always planted red clover with spring grains. For winter wheat we use to mix it in with the nitrogen (Urea) when it was spread in the spring.
We did that in the past when didn't have as many people helping. I like having someone sit on them to keep stimulating the sow while she's breeding. If we didn't have a lot of kids around to help I'd probably look back at other options!
Looking good Dan. Weve no tilled oats in for a covercrop before but i just find its alot wear and tear for a cover crop. This year we are broadcasting the oats with a bit of p and k and taking the old disc over it. Thanks for taking us in the barns too, really neat to see. Never really knew what they looked like inside even though im surrounded by them. I really enjoy your videos.
Hello, I did the same yesterday, but forgot the 2nd insemination for 1 sow. I hope it is still in heat, 26 hours is to much between the 2 inseminations…
@@farmerdan87 This will sound like a goofy idea, but you could probably do it with subwoofers attached to and spaced evenly around the bin. It would work like an ultrasonic cleaner, but with low frequencies. You'd need to find a frequency that would work best and run them in phase. It might take a while, and it would be annoying, but it would likely work.

I keep watching this over and over. Love watching the kids being involved. Congrats to Anthony for doing addition in his head. What breeds do you have ?
Is there any chance of getting metal shavings into the feed? Maybe you can rig a magnet to catch any that might be in there, if you feel it could be a problem.
Hey Dan, really enjoy your videos, I'm just up the road from you, north of Mitchell. Are you guys at the wheat yet? Mid to late next week I think we will be going here. thanks again for the great videos you put out. You're a natural at it!
Hey thanks! I'm having fun making them, everyone has to have a hobby I guess. Haven't tried the wheat yet, some neighbours have started but ours still has some green patches. Good luck with your harvest, the wheat looks good this year.
It's a frustrating problem. Only 50kg/tonne in the weaner and finishing feed. It doesn't stop all of them but it seems to help for sure. They come and go in spurts.
I've seen trucks that haul bean meal use a vibrator to get it all out of their trailer. Maybe something like that would help in this situation but I don't really know since it's a bin. It's a small hand held thing that is powered by the air from the semi
We had a vibrator on the bin for blowing feed to the weaner barns, we had a lot of problems with the sensor that turns it on and off, But I bet that would work if you could get it setup right.
You bet. We batch farrow every 4 weeks. Farrow around 180 per batch. We have 171 farrowing crates, plus however many extras nursing litters in some pens as an overflow.
