In most cases, S (sport mode) does the same exact thing as downshifting with paddle shifters in an automatic transmission, with the exception of it engaging the actual manual mode (specific to paddle shifters or moving a gear level with +/- indicators). It doesn’t matter if it’s a CVT, DCT, or a traditional AT; dropping into S is more or less just a way to downshift manually without having to apply more than 75-80% throttle in D (drive). Without doing anything else but just keeping it in S, it actually holds the revs in the particular gear you are in (except CVT’s), since it knows you want to be driving more aggressively, or will be needing more of the power band in a higher rev range. Aside from that, you can shift between L, D, and S just fine. Most cars typically either have strictly an S (sport) or L (low gear), not both. You can typically also upshift fine if ON the throttle (while simultaneously downshifting to S or paddle shifting DOWN); but it is usually highly recommended to be OFF the throttle when doing so, in order to reduce the amount of slippage inside of the transmission.
