What an awesome time for those boys, learning and exploring! What a beautiful place with the tangled woods and creek. I loved this video. How good does beaver taste in comparison to venison or elk? Oh, what was that animal when you were still driving, in the begining?
@deadpinecollective
@deadpinecollective 19 дней назад
It was such a fun few days with the boys at the camp. Beaver is most similar to beef, but with a bit more of a liver taste to it. I’ve only had it a few times when we’ve cooked it over a fire after catching one. I’ve never had it prepared by the elders, so I’m sure their version is much different. They smoke it before they prepare it for a meal. That was a porcupine which are plentiful in the region. This is also a common food staple for the First Nations. I’ve never tried it yet. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment!

Damn good dogs. I trap wolf down in Montana, I can’t say it enough, what you do for kids is amazing man. As I’ve gotten older I’ve started to really think about meaning in life, I sincerely believe that meaning in my life is passing on knowledge to those that want to receive it. Not many do, but there’s something that happens in me when I get knowledge from someone and when I pass on knowledge that I think is starting to scratch the surface of the meaning in my life.
@deadpinecollective
@deadpinecollective 21 день назад
Those are great words of wisdom. I’ve never spent much time thinking about it, but when kids come out to the bush with me, I’m always amazed at how little they know about the simple things. Some have never roasted a hotdog, and those that have, most have no idea that they need a green willow to cook it on. It’s a wonderful feeling to pass on simple knowledge as well as the more complex knowledge of harvesting an animal and conservation. Thanks again for watching and leaving a meaningful thoughtful comment. I really appreciate it!

@@deadpinecollective I’m a fan of Grey Owl having guided canoe trips at the same youth camp he worked at back in the early 20th century or Keewaydin of Temagami [Ontario]. I was originally a camper at Northwoods Camp, now defunct, also of Lake Temagami. Lake Temagami is a forty mile long starfish shaped lake about 100 km north of North Bay, Ontario where there is a RCAF base.

@@deadpinecollective I’m an American but I own a Canadian flag and fly it every Dominion Day on July 1st since I lived in Canada for about a year spread over 5 canoeing seasons. I also own an Ontario provincial flag silk screened on polyester which I got mail order for just $3.00 American. The Canadian flag cost over $60 because it’s heavy duty nylon. The one camp I worked at was so old, having been founded in 1892, that a British flag was displayed in the old lodge there on Devil’s island in the north arm of Lake Temagami. And as you doubtless are familiar Canadians remained British subjects until the passage of the Canadian Citizenship Act in 1947, much like Australians and New Zealanders as well. On my Wenonah ultralight canoe I also display an Ontario flag sticker. I’m descended from Seneca Iroquois Amerindians who were most likely tories during the American Revolution but I have another ancestor, John Scott, who served in Washington’s continental army during the revolution. When I was in the navy at submarine school in Groton, CT I got a tour of a visiting Canadian destroyer conducted by a Newfie able seaman. That was in 1978 when Canadian sailors were still wearing army uniforms.
