Who cares he doesnt have a phd, he went to fkin space! Also having a phd does not directly translate to being exceptional! Many accomplished people don't even have a college degree, and many phds can't do nor understand shit. Obviously, the first category are rare, although the latter are quite common.

I feel like it was his thing he had to get over; the other characters had them too like Raj realizing he didn't need a gf less than what he expected, Leonard realizing his mom won't change and he doesn't need her approval, Penny realizing she doesn't have to keep trying to be an actress when she's already living a good life, etc. He realized in the episode where he takes the class under Sheldon that he's plenty smart and doesn't need a PhD to prove it.
