But I had a doctor carry out 40+ fallacies in their position toward me, for God knows why, and pointing out these fallacies will show the lack of professionalism due to their errors in reasoning. Don't fallacies undermine an arguments or position held by the fallacy maker?
My mum has mental issues and I really want to travel and go to different places but my mum keeps making scenarios where she thinks I’m gonna die or something 😭. I’m laughing but I really really feel super sad from being cooped up but I know that my mum might genuinely die from a panic attack or something if I tell her I’m gonna leave. I am still 17 so I have time until that moment but I’m afraid that when the time comes and I want to leave she will go bat shit crazy. I will try to act more like an adult and more dissociated from my family. I feel guilty but I can’t truly say I love any of my family members. Staying in this house has ducked up my head lol.
Thank you so much for this video. This was eye opening to me, and it made me realize that my life story has almost exactly matched the concept of growth after struggle. This video has enabled me to realize that what I thought was a life full of ignorance, incompetence, and pure insolence towards my own goals academics-wise, was actually a story of change. My struggles that I have hated and wished I could have gone back and altered have now become my crucial and critical assets, and I will never want to change that. Thank you, for real.
I would like to use your videos in my AP class, but my students are all deaf. Is it possible for you to add subtitles/captions, please? My students need your insights!
Hi, Dynnelle, I had been good about captioning in past videos, but...actually, I have no decent excuse. Will try to add them in the weeks to come. -Jay
@@Arguelab Sir. What kind of time configuration has God put in your moutain. Sir, When will the sun rise in new hemisphere? Or Sir, Are you still sleeping Or Sir, does it take 1,051,200 minutes to make a 10 minute video or more. New hemisphere, sir, isn't that big of a mountain that we may hear your persuasive skills from our plain places. Come on RU-vid again. Make rhetoric great again.
Amazing, amazing video! I found it by searching "rhetoric"... I'm 34, and had no idea what the word Really meant until a week ago, and now I want to thoroughly learn it. I've heard of "rhetorical questions", and figured it always meant something in that vein... However, maybe at the time of publishing this video it was true, but I'm actually learning about Rhetoric from edX, and it is a free class by HarvardX on the elements of rhetoric. The instructor is James Engall, and this is his introduction: "Since 1978 Jim Engell has taught at Harvard, chairing the Department of English from 2004 to 2010. He earlier chaired the Degree Program in History & Literature as well as the Department of Comparative Literature. He serves on the Committee on the Study of Religion and participates in the Harvard University Center for the Environment. He teaches literature, interdisciplinary courses with an economist and scientists, rhetoric, and environmental studies." So maybe he only recently started Rhetoric? Maybe not. But either way, I'm checking out your book, and I'll be diving into the world of rhetoric! Thank you thank you thank you!
Thanks, Ken. I'm glad you had the same response to learning about rhetoric that I did back in the day. As for Harvard teaching it today, the university has indeed added a few courses in its current catalog. But none actually teaches classical rhetoric, and none teaches oral address or oral argument. These subjects should be the first thing the rhetoric student learns. So while it's great Harvard is slowly turning its shaggy head to rhetoric, it hasn't begun to focus on one of the original liberal arts.
@@Kendojin You are literally me. A year ago, i also felt a desperete need to study rhetoric. And now i am devouring every rhetoric book that comes in my ways, reading it history, learning its theories, practicing its principles- uh man i love it. I can talk about rhetoric all day. Up till now, i had read Atleast 40 books on rhetoric. What about you?
Jay, this is super. But now, we are faced with confusion in politics, etc. Where will this lead? I have been arguing that Democrats focus on threats to the economy, more than democracy. I fear if Republicans weaken democracy, faith in economic markets will fall producing panic. How can we be sure the US economy will thrive, OK? Any thoughts? THANKS MUCH H
I don’t think the premises you stated are true. You think democratss focus on threats to the economy? I’d very much disagree. I’d say they are more focused on social issues. The republicans are more focused on the economy. And how would the republicans weaken democracy?
Different tribes use different facts. As an example, and this fact hasn’t been publicized, regarding global warming, the Earth’s mantle is warming under the Greenland ice sheet. Do you think that’s caused by CO2 emissions? Probably not. How does this fact fit into tribal rhetoric?
If we expect universities such ad harvard to crank out articles and dissertstions to guide the future on, well...anyting, then by focusing on the traching of writing, the teaching of language, we should assume they are therefore teaching the standard for rhetoric as well, right?
Jeff embodied the age old wisdom of the Buddha who said that suffering comes from wishing for the past and hoping for the future rather than living in the now. Thank you for sharing that story.
Until this video I had been framing the problem you outlined in your global warming case as when facts bump up against a belief system, especially a rigid one, beliefs win. I think I can make that frame more nuanced. When facts bump up against a belief system based on the importance of belonging to a tribe, the tribe wins. That is, your self-identity depends on your belonging to that tribe. To contradict its values is to cast your own self-worth into doubt. Is that close? Obviously belonging to a tribe and sacrificing logos to remain in it must convey valuable benefits.
Hi Aleksandra what I wrote is a synthesis of several different ideas about I group out group differences as well as levels of consciousness. I don’t have just one reference to suggest.
Great answer covering the duality of this word! People fall in love with a hero, book or movie because of the use of rhetoric. Great people use rhetoric to convey their message so that recipients would enjoy and like the content.
Is it even possible for one to use up all the toothpaste? Experience tells us at least a couple months supply to roll, squeeze, and conjure out of those tubes..
