Exercises like Yoga and Tai Chi have been around for centuries, but in the last 60 to 70 years there have been new inventions of those wheels. For example, we have Pilates, Hot Yoga, Alexander Method and Feldenkreis Method, to name but a few. The quote here about the fly on the piano is almost directly taken from the Tai Chi Classics. The examples of injuries and improvements are not unlike those described by other practices, they are annecdotal of what improvements might be made and are a convenient selling point for the treatment being offered. Having said this, it's obvious in the modern world most people have been damaged psychologically as well as physically, often in ways they are not aware of. In general, it seems to be certain members of society, usually those with money and stressed, unhealthy lifestyles, who increasingly feel a need for these type of therapies. "The Genesis of Healing" - "use of intelligent self" - "enhance enjoyment of life" - "individuslised thinking" etc. are splattered throughout this video, a great example of linguistic program being used to sell a service. It comes across as a heavy sales pitch.
Feldenkrais is powerful work. But this video gives me the creeps, as do many of Moshe's students from his San Francisco training who stand accused of abuse: feldenkraishistoryx.com/
I just have to make something clear - this is not the savior of all movement...these concepts, and the methods they have developed are not much different than the methods developed by other modes of movement. Any movement you do, or any form of exercise, whether it be: laying in bed, waking up, getting up, yoga, pilates, strength and conditioning, aerobic, sprinting, speed agility quickness, judo, basketball, baseball, golf, etc. etc. etc. All of these things should be practiced with mindfulness and body awareness. This, is no different. There are not new ways of moving the body, but just combining principles from different facets, in order to get someone interested enough, to yup, mindfully explore their bodies....genius I know. With all that being said, just go find a good coach, in an area of movement you like or find interesting, and just practice. Then, practice more. Then, maybe try something else! You will quickly discover, the most important part of it all, is living and being your body while moving. The ultimate goal is learning to live your life , in a functional body, with a present mind...thats it, simple stuff.
Justin, Feldenkrais is radically different than yoga, pilates, and all the other forms of exercise you list. Feldenkrais is not exercise at all. If you have not experienced it and actually taken an interest in understanding it, it may look like exercise, but to do it as exercise is to utterly miss the point. Feldenkrais is about discovering ease and flow in the body. The less effort you use and the less oriented you are towards a goal or posture (yoga) or speed (sprinting), or strength (pilates) the more you will be able discover about ease and flow. The more you strain or stretch or try to build muscle (as you do in all the things you listed) the less you will be able to notice and recover the path of greatest ease and flow in your body. This is about recovering the neurological flexibility and process orientation and discovery you had as a baby and as a young child, when you had little or no muscle at all, and your movements were all explorations of the path of greatest ease, not a muscle building program or a strengthening and stretching program. It is also about rediscovering the power of your frame to do with little or no muscular effort what most athletes use a lot of muscle to do. The result of using muscle to do what evolution designed the frame to do is inefficient movement and lots of wear and tear on your joints and your whole body. Moshe Feldenkrais was a close friend of Jigaro Kano, the founder of judo, and he was chosen by Kano to introduce judo to Europe. The development of Feldenkrais work was influenced by his mastery of judo, by also by his degree in engineering from the Sorbonne and many, many other things such that very different from the study of judo. Feldenkrais is credited with being one of the first people to understand neuroplasticity. Read two chapters about Feldenkrais in Norman Doidge, M.D. bestseller on neuroplasticity, The Brain's Way of Healing, to get a better idea of what Feldenkrais is about.
@@playfulworld-visionrecover329 Hi, I know this is an old reply, but we working on a website for a Feldenkrais site. Your reply so exactly explains what Feldenkrais is, where it fits, what it is, and what it is not, in other words "It hits the nail on the head" Would you mind if we use some sections of your reply as an "Explanation of Feldenkrais" on a section of the Home Page of the website?
I've came in contact with feldenkrais method after studying bjj and his books on CQC/CQB and it all change my life, i recommend all scopes of his work to be studied.
A difficult practice and philosophy to grasp for many, but very effective and rewarding. If it were a cult or ineffective, the Physical Therapy Association and Massage Therapy groups around the United States wouldn't spend their time and money suing Feldenkrais practitioners because they understand how effective it is,. The practice stays out of the bureaucratic insurance system that is keeping Physical Therapy in the dark ages in so many ways, and this upsets many. Not the best documentary, but a starting point. Go take a class, learn by doing. And no, it is nothing like yoga.
Participants at our facility have free access to Feldenkrais classes. These classes have greatly enhanced the lives of our people who are living with many physical disabilities.
Came here looking for evidence of the power of feldenkrais. Came away thinking it looks like a yoga fad with bad marketing. Im sure Feldenkrais is GOOD but this video and the evidence presented really doesnt portray it. If you have better links please show them!
His method came with his boxing train(gymnastics and calisthenics) and judo jiu jitsu(under jiguro kano) witch descend from kalaripayathu(way of the battlefield), a vedic-india martial art(the first in story) who is a amalgamation of southern and northern gunfu(not just wushu), wrestling(judo and jiu jitsu) and yoga and meditation.
Alberto, Feldenkrais doesn’t use asanas. No stretching. Learning skeletal movement. Discovering new ways to move. Developing neuro plasticity. But it is a method for cultivating awareness which is like yoga when done properly in that sense. Try it!
