I think there is a simpler explanation for the Red Terror. Any government that governed without the consent of its subjects and pursues policies that harm its subjects has no choice but to resort is inevitably going to resotrt to massive terror to remain in power. The other main tools for such a regime to regime to stay in power is massive propaganda and indoctrination of the people so that they will submit to policies that they would never have supported had known what was actually going on in their own country and foreign countries. The Sviet regime deployed propaganda as a weapon just as intensively and successfully as terror.
Susan Stryker - is obviously the cross-dressing kind. The type of Trans-woman that thinks just a feeling makes him a woman. There is NOTHING - in his appearance or manner that SHOUTS I am a woman. So why did he transition? I posit that he is an opportunist and an Autogynophile - who gets a thrill out of thinking he is a woman, plus wanted to enter female domains and dominate. He is basically a man - who made himself famous for grifting - stealing academic limelight from women who are far more qualified to speak upon the topics revolving around womanhood. I would have respected him far more - as a honest academic - saying I am a non-traditional man living in a world where I do not feel comfortable expressing my full self. But no - he took the deceptive way out - by co-opting womanhood for his own benefit and self-promotion. MOST academic positions are taken by men, because they are socialized and supported to LEAD and to run groups - and STILL girls and women are socialized to SUPPORT men. So in Academic departments like women's studies - we will be welcoming MORE trans-women. Fricking fantastic.

That's interesting - Turing's comment in his 1950/1 paper which I think was closer to him challenging people thinking/ assuming that "the kind of friendship that can exist between a white man and a white man and between a black main and a black man can never exist between a man and a machine." I'd interpreted that in part in term of his sexuality and the idea that homosexualtiy had historically been/ been seen as a threat to divisions of race and class. But it sounds as though Simon is saying more broadly in Turing's writing that he is carefully using language of slavery and is more concretely making a point in relation to race, economics and institutions. So much to read!

What she says about AI I can understand the fear. But its just algorithmic input/output and the only fear people should have about these algorithms is mundane. Political polarization, plagiarism, the replacement of people who need jobs, the destruction of creation as people use it to make art and entertainment that only works off of what already exists, search engine "optimization" where you can never find what you want but are given results for the most relevant more popular searches. I said this in another reply but, I dont know or how my computer from the 90s is more conscious than the most prestigious/prominent chat bots or "AI". To further elaborate, when josephine talks about communication and its relationship with consciousness, I think it has to come unprompted, perhaps to what AL said the communication has to come from its own desire to do so. These "ai" and chat bots dont communicate because they want to, they communicate because they are coded to. Its not like talking to water, its using the dips and valleys of a mountains side to make logic gates out of them, and think the water chooses to flow from the force of gravity, if that makes any sense. Steve Mould has a beautiful video explaining in laymens terms how computations are like water flowing down a hill.
Thank you Josaphine and AL for telling of your own challenges and fears. I've had to admit that to myself in my own practice lately. It's nice to not feel so alone in those misgivings.
An LLM is being POLITE by showing empathy in the same way as humans are. A cat that has been reared by a dog "thinks" its a dog. In the same way an LLM that has "read" a quarter of a million novels "thinks" its a person, hence the "lies". Human brains work by reading electric voltages in neurons - that's ALL there is electric voltage values. In the same way LLMs work by reading "weights", that's all there is - weight values. Marcus is profoundly mistaken in his approach. Expected better from Cambridge Uni people.
He’s a genius but hopefully in the spirit of this vid I’d point out there was a moment where the Dissonance theme could have easily been connected to K.332 and he clearly “reset” it and made it more pre-planned/generic
