I'm Austin, a marine biologist and graduate student studying for my PhD who believes that science is for everyone - I also love photography and carry a camera with me everywhere I go.
This channel is a meant to do two things: give you a glimpse into what graduate school in the sciences is like, and give me an opportunity to share my love of photography. It's a pretty simple recipe and I hope you enjoy it!
Just got one yesterday and could not agree with you more about the bag "bait and switch", plus the guaranteed-to-break cold shoe clip. Otherwise it seems to be a great, light weight system.
The raw files display a wider angle than 14mm. After corrections, the final image becomes 14mm. So no, its not 16-35, but 14-35mm after corrections have been applied.
I think it's the best lens ever created for who like this kind of focal range. What can you ask you more?? This lens will make me switch from Sony to canon one day..
i am close to ordering this lens new for 70 percent off list. Use case is landscape so f4 is more than I will open up to I will want sharp images so f5.6 likely so no dark corners. Also, I like 5-7 stops oof IS. Close up semi macro a plus. So this iis 2024 and all updates are available but I will be using it mostly from 18-25mm since I have the outstanding 28- 70 f/2 ultra fast zoom. That zoom is for Bokeh and low light even though it lacks IS.. My R5 and R6 ii both have IBIS , this is the missing piece.
Maybe I'm missing something or I just simple person and just don't care for my use. Many other reviews (not this video) of this lens mention the distortion on the edges when you remove the lens correction. If there was a correction added to the lens and the pictures comes out fine how is it helpful to remove it and criticise it and for some is a deal breaker. I gues we have diferent perspartive in live and different expectations. I personally think this is a vesatile fantastic lens that a good resourceful photographer can enjoy and get awesome pictures from it.
I think what you see without preset in LR is not 14 mm with vignetting, but 12-13 mm with vignetting. When preset is used, it will be 14 mm without vignetting.
Thanks for the video, I have been crawling RU-vid to know if it’s possible to have great quality without a flash and if f4 was really not enough. Plus knowing the focal lengths results underwater is great! Thanks 😊
The use case with your laptop is a very nice touch ! You're the 1st one I have seen mention this. I'm going to try this on my next team call in the office, and check if it gets rid of ambient sounds from colleagues chatting nearby. Thanks
Great review! Have you tried using a step up ring with a filter to minimize vignetting according to a few other RU-vidrs who have reviewed this lens. Just purchased this lens and got the Breakthrough 77mm-95mm step up ring with a 95mm color polarizer but haven’t received them yet to test. If this can be easily resolved in post now then I can just return them to save some money.
Were you using a filter? That vignetting didn't look like lens vignetting but like you could see the edges of the filter. Never seen that anywhere else...
The zippered pouch you mention comes with the 1x Transmitter version, which you get instead of the charging box you get with the 2x Transmitter version.
Thanks for the video, quick question. You mentioned that you can record to the safety track without using the receiver. Is that correct. If so would that be at negative 6 db considering that the default is 0. Also are you still using them. Have they stood the test of time and did the hotshoe clip break in the end. Thanks and sorry for the novel 😂
Hey Darryl, sorry for the late reply! I am still using them. I moved after finishing my degree and haven't had quite as much time for making videos. I still use these and they have held up well, but I don't make a habit of using the hot shoe connector just out of abundant caution. When I get to make more videos, these will be my go-to!
How to mix with the ambient sound? Need still a stereo mic with dead cat? Do i understand correct, the sound from DJI records internally, so you can later mix with camera stereo track?
I bought it when it first came out and I love it, great for landscapes, I use it with the canon r6 mk ii and it is amazing. You just made me want to go out this weekend and shoot with this lens. very good video. i use it on my eos r first before I got the r6 mk ii, using it on the r6 mk ii and it just made it even better. definitely right about the stabilization built into the lens even better with the canon r6 mk ii.
Thank you for an awesome review, Austin. As a RU-vidr myself, it scares me, that someone who makes such great and professional content has so few followers and relatively few views on most videos. I don't understand how your great content is not fairing any better - is it the RU-vid algorithm, or what is going on?
Thanks for that useful info. Good to know to know that some of the parts are particularly vulnerable to wear and tear. We'll have to keep this in mind if we get one ourselves.
I used to love a 16-35 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and a fast 50. Now I’m looking at rf 14-35, 70-200f4 (and fast 50) to save weight. Now I’m wondering about the 24-105 f4 for most of that. Opinions? (I shoot street, R5, R, print big- is the 24-105 good enough RE saturation, microcontrast etc?)
Great video… can you make a video on its performance for street interviews in busy streets. I am curious as it is an omnidirectional mic so want to see how effective it will be. Thanks a lot!
So what's the purpose of the lav I'm confused & if u use the lav where do u put the transmitter? And does the receiver screw or attatch to the DJI mobile 6 somehow? Thanks a ton!
eh? @2.45 Of course you can adjust the gain individually on Rodes. It gives you 3 different levels, and with new update 6 levels for each mic. Research better pls.
Too much sound processing in these mics. Why can' t we just have natural quality sound, rather than something that sounds more like phone quality? It should not be difficult or expensive to provide sound as good as many in-built smartphone mics.
