Great tutorial! Im trying to convert my vhs to digital, but when selecting the video source, my vhs doesn't show, only my webcam appears. Could the capture device be defective or is some settings incorrect? Thanks! 🙏
Hi Tim. I am using an ADVC110 as my capture device. AV/C tape recorder player as my selected device. When I try to do the custom format based on your settings I get the capture device does not support the selected video format. Any suggestions?
That's a Firewire device, so I'd use the free Scenalyzer to capture the video (www.videohelp.com/software/ScenalyzerLive). That's what I use for firewire capture. Firewire is 4:1:1 anyway (in the United States anyway) so there's not really a need to capture in 4:2:2. Everything else in the tutorial will still work with the captured AVI file.
QUESTION....what if I plan to edit home videos in Resolve or Premier....do I capture and do the staxRip/Topaz....ALL of that....BEFORE editing the video? I'm new to transferring vhs home videos and some of these steps seem to be more appropriate to after I edit scenes.....but maybe not. At any rate, the videos are very helpful!
Great video!! I have also watched your video on capturing SD video using VirtualDub, Staxrip and Topaz Video AI. Have you done the video on using OBS Studio to capture lossless VHS from SD. I'm also using a Gefen Composite-to-HDMI scaler. I'm pretty sure that in addition to upscaling it also deinterlaces (I'm using it because it also functions like a simple TBC). Any thoughts? Again, many thanks.
I haven't yet done the lossless OBS tutorial. I'm hoping to find time to do it soon. I've never used the Gefen composite to HDMI scaler so I can't really say if it's deinterlacing or not. You could try bringing the file that you captured into StaxRip and then see what happens when you step through it after setting up the deinterlacing that I talked about in the video. If you see duplicate frames as you go through the video frame by frame, that means it's already deinterlaced.
I have a VCR tape somewhere, I have to find it, filled with nothing but crashes purposely done by myself and two buddies. That's all we'd do is get the car to top speed and go head on into other cars and see how ridiculous it could get hahaha😂 Game was played on like the edge of space hahahaha
This guide has been extremely helpful. The only thing I'm unsure about is cleaning up the audio. I see that I can choose an audio file in StaxRip, but when I do so, it never syncs up correctly. What might I be missing? I am using the same bitrate and everything as the original file.
I'm not sure, I've never tried using the method I describe in the video with a separate audio file. You might need to use a different piece of software to get the audio synced up.
Help!!!!!!! I'm trying to deinterlace uncompressed AVI files using the exact settings in your video for StaxRip and I keep getting encoding errors. First I was getting audio errors when I loaded the file so in the interest of time, I changed the audio options to no audio and the audio error disappeared but when I tried to do the final conversion step I get an encoding error.
You might need to set up AVISynth/QTGMC and then use VirtualDub for the encode process. I can provide a script if you get AVISynth and the various plugins up and running. I've used this video in the past to get AVISynth and QTGMC installed - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C4PyyQoz6eo.htmlsi=MKfmlO2tuya6bfJ2
Would it be possible to share a small piece of the original AVI that you are working with? Curious to see if the same issue occurs on my end or if there's an easy fix.
Not sure where I went wrong, but videos still appear interlaced. I'm using a Sony TRV318 camera with s-video output, the Startech as recommended, and OBS. I rechecked and it looks like all the settings are the same as recommended. I also tried importing the video into Avidemux editor and deinterlacing there, but no luck. Anything else to try?
Hello, after an hour of recording my vhs tapes i have a slight delay to my sound.so i have to stop the vhs cassete and play it again to fix.my audio settings are default any ideas how to fix this?
I'm just learning about all this also, but I have heard that the audio & video can gradually get out of sync due to "Time Base Correction" (TBC) issues. Many people are purchasing old Panasonic DVD recorders (such as the ES15) and using them as "playthrough" TBC devices. I recently borrowed one but haven't got to the point of trying it out yet.
@@RonHParker i have fix it.i just go to audio settings-audio monitoring and select "monitor and output" and it did the work.if for some reason it gets out of sync( bad vhs tape tracking or change of vhs speed,LP,SP) you select monitor only and then monitor and output again and it fixes.(Just like a small reset on selection.
Hey Tim, thank you for this tutorial. I just downloaded VirtualDub at 09:20 in my list there is no UtVideoor huffyuv: Any idea why or how I can fix it? Thanks
This is one of the best videos on the internet, I cannot thank you enough. I was getting choppy results after deinterlacing with OBS and felt lost on what else I could try. I knew Virtualdub had powerful capabilities but I had no idea how to use them. You meticulously walking through each step was an absolute godsend, even if I didn't understand what any of it meant. After doing my first deinterlace on staxrip, my jaw dropped at how perfect it was. The quality produced from this process is so much higher quality than any of the countless other things I have tried. Once again, thank you.
A tip: If you are going to upload to RU-vid, upscale the video to *at least* 1080p. RU-vid bitcrushes the hell out of SD video. So an upscaled to HD video looks better, even at SD resolutions.
@@jij9972 If you plan to archive for yourself, doing it at the native resolution is the logical thing to do, of course. But you take that SD file and upscale it to HD before uploading it to RU-vid. If possible by an even multiple when using traditional upscaling.
@@Fridelain I'm sorry im new to this but how do i upscale it before uploading it to RU-vid or Instagram because i have a lot of tapes to upload for RU-vid
@@jij9972 Yeah, whatever video editor you use. You could also use Handbrake, it's free, eady to use and does simple tasks like converting to another format and upscaling pretty straightforward.
Great video but I assume it's only for analog sources. Do you happen to have a video to set up for capture from a Digital Video camera via Firewire? I just installed a Firewire input card and trying to get a live video feed from my DV camera. I followed these steps and there were several settings in OBS that were not in the current version and I had already selected one of the options on the splash screen when OBS opened the 1st time. I did not hit cancel and don't remember what option I selected. thanks
I followed the steps after buying a new computer where OBS didn't picked up the signal of my new PC this video saved me for continue my VHS record tapes thank you verry much well done 👍🏽
Is there a way to setup a horizontal and vertical position of the input. I'm trying to record picture from an analog device via VGA (my setup is a VGA to HDMI adaprer whitch is connected to an HDMI capture dongle) the picture I get is of center in the horisontal position
When I go to the “configure video” setting under the device properties, it doesn’t give me the option to check vcr input. It’s there it’s just grayed out, I don’t know where to go from here.
So what was wrong is: I had to change the audio setting in the properties of the device to the avermedia video card I was using, still though all the tips in the video are much appreciated, and the video and audio I’m getting is as clear as it can be with tape. Thank you and everyone in the comments for all the help
Excellent instructional video, articulated for all levels and professionally presented. I have a question on this : What would be the settings for recording a video from a video source that is high quality, for example, recording a video higher resolution and quality than an analog 4:3 resolution video source as here. What would the settings be for a movie that is 1920x1080 resolution, I would want a high quality output but the smallest size MP4 video file ?
Thanks for the video, Tim! I am working on digitizing some family home videos on VHS and am adopting this method, especially since I have the VC500 capture device. What settings do you use in VirtualDub2 under "Capture -> Timing" with the VC500?
Thanks for the perfect walkthrough! Was able to mimic these settings (with some slight variations) to extract footage from my old Sony DCR-SR42 Camcorder.
I can't realistically test all of them so you'd probably need to check with the manufacturer of the device in question. Or use the one I suggested in the video.
@@timfordphoto i bought the one you tested and i´m waiting for it to arrive. The Startech site states and confirms that Startech SVID2USB232 records "weave" interlaced, so it´s good. And from other tests i ve watched on youtube this dongle is one of the best.
I appreciate your step-by-step directions. I was using OBS to transfer from my camcorder hi8 to my computer but I needed to understand how to set up and use OBS settings and this was absolutely perfect! Thank you for posting this very helpful guided tutorial. 🙌
I can apply this fix clip by clip, but I'm working with 40+ clips. I tried to select all of them and apply the change, but when I drag them to create a new sequence it only applies to the first one. Please help!
Which version of Premiere are you using? I did a test with a bunch of clips on the latest version of Premiere and it worked as expected. All of the clips that I used had stereo audio, so I changed them to mono and set them to only have audio in the left channel. I then dropped all of the clips into the timeline and the audio settings followed for every clip.
Hi Tim, I just wanted to thank you again for posting this great video and for all your help in getting me started capturing and editing VHS tapes. I’ve gone from the clueless newbie stage to the sorta know what I’m doing but still dangerous stage. I’m now comfortable doing VHS TAPE lossless 4:2:2 captures to an AVI file, cutting the AVI archive video file into smaller AVI files, and deinterlacing and upscaling (960 x 720) the individual AVI files. I purchased Topaz Video AI (TVAI) and I’m starting to get familiar with the various settings. I can attach a file (if you want) that shows the various tools and settings that you suggested in your video (and other additional tools and settings that I ended up using). Hopefully, some of your subscribers (the newbies) would find this information useful in getting started. BTW - I have to give high praise to Topaz Labs - their customer support is amazing. I do have one suggestion on your recommended settings in TVAI. I found that the settings were great on medium quality VHS video (such as tapes recorded from cable box like HBO), but were a bit too harsh for some of my lower quality 35 year old VHS camcorder videos. Topaz tech support worked on a sample of one of my videos and provided me with suggested settings that worked better. I included this information in the attached file. Thanks again, Charlie
